The recently released FAQ mentioned a 5 install limit if I got the digital version...  so if I got Mass Effect 2 on Steam, what happens if I reach that limit for whatever reason, such as restaging my computer a few times and such and I want to play this game again a couple years down the road.  Am I completely screwed over and have to buy it again?

I havent heard about this but if you bought it on Steam, this wouldnt apply. They use their own means of copy protection and the like, and this isn't one of them.

Q: What sort of DRM will Mass Effect 2 employ?

* Mass Effect 2 will require a unique CD key to install on PC, and then you must have the disc in the tray to play the game. Additionally if you registered for the Cerberus Network, you must have an EA account to register your game too. If you purchased the digital version on PC, you will be able to install the game 5 times.

thats the EA digital version and likely d2d/impulse which likely employ securom. There was no mention on steam that it included securom on top of steam. (the same is true for ME1)

If ever there was an incentive not to buy things online, that would be it.

though interesting if you search around - when announced it was noted there would only be a disk check for retail and the digital distributors drm implemented....let's hope this remains true and the FAQ is for the EA Download

Yeah, this is what I'm hoping for to.  I don't like being lied to.

We've been trying to figure this out on the Impulse forums. This thread aggregates some stuff you might find interesting. It sounds like Steam may be the only platform on which the we-are-using-the-platform's-DRM holds true. :? BUT, according to the EULA on Impulse, the 5-machine limit is in a rolling 24-hour period, so it sounds like they're finally kissing that lifetime limit... err... business goodbye.

If that's true, this certainly inclines me toward Steam. On the other hand, it seems like we'll all end up tied to EA's servers anyway for the DLC, so trying to avoid this system by going with Steam may only be delaying the inevitable.

People **** and moan about Steam but I find it the best service out there. Games are always there, don't pay taxes (Woo!!) and I love getting a game without leaving my chair. ;)

Never said I hated Steam, just I won't get any game on there that has a ridiculous level of DRM.  So far that has only been Crysis.  I REALLY don't want to add ME2 to that list.

Oh, sorry, wasn't insinuating anyone in particular whined. I just hear it quite often from multiple venues that "steam sucks". It may have at one time but it is quite convenient for me.

I was too little bit worried about this as I converted my collector's edition to digital deluxe via EADM (because I do not like dvd in drive). As I was searching for this issue I found that the limit is not so restrictive.

"While there is no limit on the total number of machines on which the Software can be Authenticated, you may launch and access the Software on no more than five (5) unique machines in any rolling 24-hour period." (excerpt from ME2 eula)

The only thing that i don't like about Steam are the ridiculous prices here in Europe. Very expensive, i only buy games with an discount of at least 50% that are able to beat retail prices. Doesn't happen that often.
