The world of Thedas is in a sorry state right now. The exact nature of the discord plaguing the world is the Fade Tears obviously but what is the state of Thedas at the beginning of Inquisition? This will cover the state of the major nations and factions presently known.

The year is 9:40 Dragon.

Orlais: Civil war between Empress Celene I and Grand Duke Gaspard De Chalon. Possible elven uprising led by former handmaiden Birala.

Ferelden: Still recovering from the Fifth Blight. Largely player determinant to the exact state. The Hero of Ferelden/Warden Commander is MIA.

Orzammar: Player determinant.

The Free Marches: Widespread disorder due to the Mage-Templar War especially in Kirkwall. The Champion of Kirkwall is MIA.

Nevarra: Possibly impending disorder due to the weak and elderly King having no immediate heirs. Mortalitasi cult largely in control.

Antiva: (If Zevran is alive) The Antivan Crows are in disorder due to the actions of Zevran Arainai. Otherwise unknown.

Anderfels: The Grey Wardens largely in control of the nation. Possible rumors of a new Blight but not clarified. Otherwise unknown.

Rivain: Possible upheaval due to the annulment of the Dairsmuid Circle of Magi. Otherwise unknown.

Tevinter Imperium: Continued hostilities with the Qunari over the possession of the island of Seheron. Possible upheaval due to the actions of Magister Aurelian Titus. Otherwise unknown.

Dalish Elves: Possible gathering of the clans near Halamshiral. Too widespread and dispersed to represent a considerable threat.

Qunari; Still engaged in battle to control Seheron against the Tevinter Imperium. Otherwise unknown.

Grey Wardens: Engaged in several secretive missions over the past ten years since the end of the Blight. Nature or purpose unknown.

The Chantry: In complete chaos. Due to the conflict at the White Spire and subsequent election at Andoral's Reach, the Circle of Magi is now independent of the Chantry.

Due to interference from the Divine, Lord Seeker Lambert Van Reeves dissolves the Nevarran Accord, separating the Templars and the Seekers of Truth from the Chantry. Is unknown if all Seekers/Templars support the Lord Seeker in this. Lambert Van Reeves then disappears and is presumed dead.

The Divine sends Cassandra Pentaghast and Leliana to respectively find the Champion of Kirkwall and the Hero of Ferlden/Warden Commander in order to bring an end to the Mage-Templar War. Both fail.

The future of Magi in Thedas is uncertain.

That's all of the major factions I think. Feel free to add or correct. Your comments and thoughts are appreciated.

Will the events in Antiva, Rivain and Nevarra have an impact on Orlais or Fereldan?

In either case the Inquisition will be screwed if they have to set everything in order in Orlais alone. And here I thought Shepard had it rough.

Technically the Divine sent Lelianna and Cassandra to findout if Hawke was the external agent that caused the events at Kirkwall. That is why Cassandra originally is so antagonistic to Varric because she believes Hawke is an agent of whomever is pulling strings.

Well the premise of the reason for the Inquisition coming into being is that the all of the groups that could otherwise respond to the veal tears were incapable of doing so due to already having their hands full.

That is one thing to keep in mind, the goal of the inquisition is the veal tears, I am sure it is possible to affect the Mage Templar war or the Orlesian civil war or some impact on the situation of the elves or the condition of the chantry, but first and foremost you are worried about the tears.

There's also a possible war in Starkhaven if Sebastian tries to take the throne.

Briala is going to be using stealth and subterfuge to undermine Orlais and aid the Orlesian City Elves, but I'd say there is no true elf rebellion in Orlais anymore. And the city elves of Halamshiral will by and large be reluctant to do so again for a while, I would think.
