Having played many times and in many ways, I find it difficult to truly say which sibling I prefer.

Bethany is sweet as pie throughout Act 1 (assuming you Friend her), but unless you make her a Circle Mage, her personality flips when she becomes a Grey Warden. She becomes cold, unpleasant, and downright nasty to Hawke. Even though she attempts to make up for it when she comes to help in The Last Straw, it's clear she still blames Hawke and seems rather vindictive. Being a Grey Warden is definitely difficult, but at least she's not dead. Has anyone been a Rival with her (I never have)? Is she even more unpleasant?

Carver is a snarky little brat throughout Act 1 (assuming you Rival him), and if you make him a Templar, he continues that thread. However, he seems to take becoming a Grey Warden fairly well. But, unlike Friend Bethany, Rival Carver is at least consistent with his attitude no matter how he ends up. Now, I fully believed it was going to be impossible to really like him... until I made him a Friend instead of a Rival. He actually became rather sweet and likable, and I about fell off my chair in shock. Friendship is definitely the way to go with him, although I've never been able to get him to full 100% Friend, even with using the Wiki to help.

So, which sibling is your favorite? Do you prefer them as friends or rivals? Why? And finally, what is a Rival Bethany like?

Bethany, for sure. I love Carver, but I've been playing mage!Hawke a lot of times and recently played my canon Hawke who is a rogue and I absolutely adore Bethany. Her relationship with magic and the Chantry is well-written and her voice acting is phenomenal. She has the most emotion, Carver's voice actor was okay at most.

Also Bethany's snarky attitude is adorable. I played her as friendship with a bit of sarcastic!Hawke and her replies are either hilarious or really sad, I feel. She went to the Chantry in my playthrough, she is happier there. I also love the relationship she shared with Orsino.

Bethany.It's not even close.

She's just much more likable than Carver, and Carver's constant complaints grate on me.

Though both siblings have their pros/cons, I prefer Carver. I love his voice actor, and he definitely can rival a snarky Hawke, on the sarcasm/snitty meter.

He definitely takes to the Grey Wardens better than Bethany, but I do like the dynamic of Bethany as a Grey Warden. Having Carver as a Templar, then switching sides at the last moment (when pro-mage), also is a moment that makes me smile.

**EDIT**

Should add, that I have never been able to rival Bethany, nor get Carver to 100 percent Friendship.

Yeah, you can tell he was like an father figure once she was separated from her family (I have this bit of headcanon that Orsino was the one that taught Bethany to be an force mage).

And as for me, Bethany hands down. It's really nice to have an companion that cares for you and treats well while not dragging you to their troublesome agendas. I'm half hoping that she is an optional romance in Inquisition. After all she went through she deserves someone that gives her some love.

I very much prefer Bethany myself, though Carver does have an interesting dynamic. Problem I have with him is that he complains far too much about being in Hawke's shadow, and his banter with most of the party can be a bit grating, though I do love when Isabela catches him on the Blooming Rose bit, and when Carver balks at Varric calling him "little Hawke". I get that he wants to be his own man and stuff, but I don't have much patience for that kind of bellyaching. That said, taking him to the Deep Roads and subsequently making him a Grey Warden, to me, is a much better path for him than it is for Bethany, who I'd never care to doom to a life of Wardenhood. This is a personal note, but the whole sibling rivalry thing doesn't really gel with me anyhow, since the relationship I have with my own sisters is more like it would be between Hawke and Bethany, so I relate to this one more. Also, I love the effect the discoveries of Legacy has on Bethany more than it does on Hawke.

That's a great headcanon!

I agree, you can really tell she looks up to him and he cares for her, it's really bittersweet. The end fight with Orsino was heartbreaking with Bethany in the Circle, and how she reacted to Meredith. Again, big kudos to her voice actress, she is really incredible at displaying emotion.

Yeah I was pretty delighted to see her have Force Mage powers when I started up Legacy, and had similar headcanon that her time in the Circle made up for what Malcolm could have taught her. My only problem is that there's no good reason for Bethany and Hawke to part ways should you choose the pro-mage ending, though I like to headcanonize that Bethany accompanies Hawke no matter what.

I aways thought the same. If she is an Grey warden, I understand that she would need to go back to her duties once the battle was over, but if you side with the mages and she is in the circle, I think it would only make sense for her to follow Hawke, considering she has nothing to go back to.

There's a thread like this one page back.

This was my reply:

I love 'em both.

Carver, admittedly, is a hard man to like, but he grew on me over time. With human characters, it feels like BioWare writers often try to defy the traditional gender roles, making women the tough ones while the men relatively soft and sensitive. I liked Carver as a character showing that, sometimes, boys will be boys. He had a real chip on his shoulder, no doubt, but that's just who we are as men. If you want to see his character really come into his own, though, you really have to have him survive the Deep Roads. You can really see how he's grown in the DLC missions post-Act 1, and briefly in The Last Straw. Otherwise, he's either dead, or just another lackey of Meredith's.

I think I still prefer Bethany by a hair. While she doesn't have Carver's potential for character growth, I also rather like having a few "low-key" characters in my game; the types that aren't terribly interesting, but easy to get along with as friends/lovers/family, and are defined by their relationship with the main-character. I liken her a lot to Kaidan from Mass Effect -- interesting in his own right, but you don't save him on Virmire purely for his character. You have to have some love for his type, otherwise he'll bore you and be the easy sacrifice.

I prefer Carver. Mostly because he seems like the more realistic sibling than Bethany, at least to me anyway.

I liked both of them and would've loved it if both of them could've made it to Kirkwall.

One thing I like is that each sibling adapts to things differently.  Bethany is happiest in the Circle and causes her the most growth while Carver is happier as a Grey Warden and grows more as well and is less of a ****** as a Grey Warden in my opinion.

Who do I like more? Bethany obviously. Who is better for the story? I'm not sure. Bethany's story is actually pretty good in a sad way if she becomes a Grey Warden. It makes her a tragic character. Carver on the other hand doesn't hate it, but when he pops up later I wonder why I didn't just kill him. His death would add some tragedy to the story and his cameos after act 1 consisted of him whining some more. Maybe him surviving the Deep Roads would mean something if he grew as a person but he doesn't until he defends Hawke in The Last Straw. But there's no character development for him reaching that point.

I found the pop ups pretty silly. He's fighting in Kirkwall, then he's in the Deep Roads, then he's kidnapped by mages/templars... Not to mention Legacy/MoTA. Some people never want to willingly lose a character but for those whose role is minimal/stupid after a potential death might be better off dead. The same goes for Bethany but it's much harder to kill her off because she's much more likable. Her character development is better too.

So maybe story-wise Carver is better off dead since his character development after Act 1 sucks while Bethany might be better off as a Grey Warden for the tragic element. Her frustration at Hawke, while unjust, is still understandable. It's sad because they were potentially very close beforehand.

Carver may be likable as a friend, but the only way to get his friendship is to be a self-hating mage pretty much. The game makes it so you're supposed to have Bethany as a friend and Carver as a rival. Points for the reversal are small when earned.

To be fair to Carver, Congokong, he's more of a whiner if you are a rival to him and if you are a sarcastic Hawke (the best one of the 3) then you do kind of push his buttons.

I can't decide between the two.

As for Carver, he's the most realistic to me. I've never tried Friend, but not sure I care to. Me and my own brother don't get along either. That's life.

That said, I like Carver as a Templar. Just fits the rivalry. Hell, even his "background" portrait is orange (yes, I get hung up on stupid things like that. It doesn't match the Warden motif well). He also makes Wardens sound cool. Which they are not. I'm in full agreement with Bethany.

I guess realism is a matter of perspective. Neither seem more or less realistic to me in terms of their rivalry or friendship.

Carver, hands down. He is so much fun to have along. I hate that he only lives on a mage playthrough. One of the bad decisions BW made with this game.

I'm just saying the friction is realistic. I know nothing about sweet sibling friendships like Bethany's. Not a thing.

I imagine that if the fate of the companions was independent of class, you could potentially create an unstoppable team by Act 3 if she survives. Imagine two force mages on the field.

I like how Fenris and Merrill kind of function as sibling replacements...... from hell.

Like I said, it's just a matter of perspective. My relationship with my siblings is similar to Bethany, so it's the one I connect with more.

Bethany for so many reasons, close with my sister in real life for one. And the most important, you get to do the carver jig in the legacy dlc, loved that.
