Right, but you waste grenades for that and it is one button more to press. Most players don't do need, I think I have never seen anyone doing that at all.

It just wastes any unused charges.
The biggest reason you don't see people switch hammers on the fly is probably because most run a single hammer type in most public games (usually biotic).

I use both hammers but I use the Electric hammer mostly as a gimmick. I kill most regular enemies with the Electric hammer (mostly for the challenge points) and try to debuff larger enemies with it before switching and finishing them off with the biotic hammer.
Although I don't play him very much.
