Should armor look realistic or pleasing to the eye?

I'm pretty sure the armor design has been set by now so this won't be changing anything but it seems like it'd be fun to talk about. Now if you will please take a moment and think about games where you could customize your own armor to whatever extent and what you actually chose. If you played Skyrim on the PC try to think of armor modifications you downloaded and what ones you found the most enjoyable to look at.

For me I tend to sacrifice practicality to make the armor visually pleasing. Often I write this off as it's a fantasy setting and the actual protection comes from the magic rather then the metal. I can't say I'm a fan of the battle bikini, I tried that in Skyrim when I downloaded a lingerie mod, I do like a little leg to be visible as well as the characters face and maybe some nice abdominal muscles.

Realistic looking armor also tends to become a bit duel to me after looking at it for so long and after spending at times 2 hours on a characters face I sure don't want to cover it up. Plus what people call realistic I question at times often wondering if someone could really march for five hours or so in heavy plate. That and if you really wanted to go realistic I don't believe you could pick up armor meant for someone standing 1.9 meters tall and put it on someone 1.75 meters tall and have it function properly.

Real armour can also be aesthetically pleasing.

But I don't think that Dragon Age, or any fantasy work for that matter, is required to be "realistic" in any respect.

I tend to go for looks, Skyrim the Nightingale armor is by far my favorite, you get a cape. I also liked the full Steel Plate armor in Skyrim and usually stuck with it even when I could get the higher tiers Or like Fallout 3/NV I went for Dusters because I love the trenchcoat look.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. You can have armor designs that look both practical and visually appealing.

That would be my preference. I'd like to see armor designs that look like they perform their intended function, cover all the bits that need to be covered, that aren't over-sized, and that look visually appealing.

Funny, I think realistic armor IS pleasing to the eye. Nothing is worse than those overly complex and clunky fantasy armors with a million useless spikes and shoulder pads the size of basketballs attached to them.  Fantasy armor is usually ''trying too hard'' which ends up making the armor too busy and nonsensical.

I do think that in DA where you can have exotic materials coupled with lyrium enhancements, you open up a lot more stylistic options for your (at least higher-end) arms and armor.

For regular army grunts, I think the armor should look more realistic/plausible as they are still using iron/steel and likely no magic. But for high-end gear the PCs are likely to craft, there should be more flexibility in style due to magic providing the lion's share of protection...

For me, it's a mix.

This is a fantasy game, so armour doesn't *need* to be realistic.
That said, I personally like the look of 'realistic armour', so a mixture of both realistic and fantasy armour, and also armour which has both realistic and fantastical elements in it, would be ideal for me.

You seem to be thinking in terms of the overbuilt armor you see on male characters or villains. There is another direction. Your avatar for example seems to indicate you like armor of a less realistic type at least for female characters.

As others have already pointed out, you can have an armor that is both realistic and good looking. Out of these both options however, I prefer more realistic ones. Especially shoulderpads. A shoulderpad should never look like it's heavier than the rest of the armor combined.

My avatar does not reflect my preferences and views about medieval armor, I chose it because of other reasons. (And its not armor anyway)

Realistic armor that looks cool: (Its REAL armor, she wears it in tournaments)

Only realistic armor is badass, because it works. Something that couldn't work because of odd nonsensical design flaws cannot be badass.

It really can't. Or at least I haven't seen an example of real armour that doesn't look bad.

That doesn't look badass. It looks like garbage - as if she stapled a bunch of metal plates together, with the goal being to blind her enemies with the glare.

The two aren't mutually exclusive, however dragon age seems to go by a MMO mindset by having fairly grounded nice looking armors at low levels and then just straight up warcraftian armors that turn you into a walking slab of spikes at higher levels.

I prefer a mix of both leaning more towards function.

Yes? I'm aware of what armour really looks like. It looks like crap. I'm sure it's quite functional. It doesn't stop it from being ugly and visually unappealing.

Edit: Obviously taste is subjective. But I'm just saying that you'll never convince some people (like me) that realistic medieval period armour looks good.

I like other types of realistic armour (e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Roman, Greek). But I loathe, loathe medieval armour.

I think a mix is a good idea. DA doesn't generally go tooo over the top.

I am hoping that the customization will allow us more choice. For example whether or not we have massive shoulder pad things that usually look awful (although they can work on some armors).

What's pleasing to the eye differs from person to person. You for example find that armor pleasing. I do not in the least.

I hope so to. From some of the images I'm under the impression we'll be able to wear some leather armor. Really if we're talking armor you're going to be traveling long distances in and actually wearing I tend to believe that leather with a plate chest piece and maybe some grieves and gauntlets makes more sense then full plate.

I think these are all 'realistic' designs that are visually appealing:

Of course some are fantasy-based rather than medieval, but they all look functional without looking boring. Of course they might not be everyone's cup of tea. As someone mentioned earlier, taste is subjective.

As long as there aren't any "sexy" upgrade when wear by the females. For every bikini armor designed for females, I demand the same for males as well.
