Should armor look realistic or pleasing to the eye?

Seriously, if you're going to quote me, at least have the decency to read my post properly. At no point did I mention mixing two styles together. I was referring to making x amount of visually symetrical armour sets and x amount of non symetrical armour sets.

You didn't mention mixing two styles together on a single character, but your proposal does necessarily mean mixing the styles in the game.  And you don't mention symmetry at all, so I'm not sure where that came from or how that would be relevant.

I really like that armor I've seen in a museum. IMO its a good balance of function and looks. I also like its sleek design, its not laden with spikes or other completely unnecessary fantasy crap that catches blades and weighs you down.

This one too.

As long as the female armor aren't bikini style, I'm ok with less realistic armour. the important thing for me is that the armor is believably, the style as long as is good to loock at, is not a big problem.

If bikini must be, I want a bikini armor for males too.

By any chance do you prefer this?

the_steam_freak_2_0_light_up_full_steamp

Anyway I'm pro-historic-styles. I don't like punk styles.

No, that thing is also ugly.

It's only something I'd like to see a little bit of for tanky plate users, not all characters. I think the Witcher 2 did a great job with lighter armors and clothing that would be nice to see a bit of as well. There is no right answer to be had in this thread anyways since it's all personal preference.

Anyways, do you have an example of armor that you enjoy?

(Sorry if you posted one already, I only lightly skimmed the thread.)

If we're talking leather armour, I'd favour something like this:

stock-photo-late-medieval-renaissance-or

For heavier armour, I like this style (in terms of progression from weak, early game to strong, late game):

fantasy-knight-armorxurge-3d-corporation

tumblr_m1d3u9LXZ91qcjglso2_1280.jpg

This is also fine with me as a general type of progression:

Yeah I'm with Exile, that's just waaay too busily engraved.

It's not the engraving that bothers me, it's the actual design.

You kinda have to have a balance. There are people who like the completely over-the-top high fantasy armor (we're talkin' your Daedric armor and your diamond armor and dragon-whatever armor) and then there are those who do prefer realistic. Personally, I despise over-the-top high fantasy armor with huge spiky pauldrons and what have you, and I prefer the kind of armor you might find in the witcher or dark souls (not even because it's realistic; it's just aesthetically more appealing to me personally). At the end of the day, though, you can't please everyone, because aesthetics are extremely subjective

That's funny, I like historical looking armours but also thought the daedric armour looked quite wicked. I don't thin it strays thaaat far. The skyrim one.

That's okay, I don't think we can be friends anyway, those are hideous :P

The only thing that matters are the stats I really don't care about what they look like.

I don't feel the need to have 100% realistic armour and I like the armour to look good, as long as it doesn't break my suspension of disbelief. Footlong spikes, cleavage in a metal breatplate or bare midriffed leather make me cringe and really takes me out of the game with how unrealistic they are. Now clothing - you can do what you like with clothes and robes and such, they're not really armour. That's why I wasn't bothered by Isabela's outfit, it was clothing - she favoured maneuverability and didn't wear armour.

But yeah for armour: nothing so ridiculas that it takes me out of the game but it doesn't need to be really realistic either. Pretty - but not silly.

mmmm....

all hands for realistic looking armor.

But. For example a plate armor. It's heavy. It's hot inside. I can't really see how let say a human being can travel in such armor several miles on foot. Yes you can roll in full plate, you can climb the ladders, you can jump and all this stuff. But you know, if we are talking about realistic, i would prefer some chainmail.

Hanging around on a sun in a full  plate... yeah you don't wanna be near this person because of the smell.

Realistic of course. But why people think that realism means "bad looking" armor? Armor can be realistic and pleasing the eye.

Thats what armor actually is.

Agreed real armor is not meant to look pretty it's keep or all your blood and  organs in one place ceremonial armor on the other hand...

I know i'm the minority but i guess i'm entitle to my own preference in gaming. I like armor that is pleasing to the eyes. Fantasy game isn't realistic in my beliefs so i don't mind a witch in silky cloth with no armor aka Galadriel anyone?

We think it's bad looking because we think all of the pictures you posted are very ugly.

Another photo of a couple of late knights armors from the museum. Maybe its just me, but I find armor like that pretty intimidating, more than fantasy armor. Imagine someone wearing that armor swinging a huge sword at you in a duel.

Before or after I stop laughing? I'm sure somehow like this would kill me swinging weapons at me, but they're about as intimidating as someone wearing their boiler.

If you were a peasant with nothing to protect you but a threadbare tunic and pants with nothing but string to hold them up a knight in full kit on a horse taller than you are coming at you at full speed, you would be shitting yourself.  Its all a matter of perspective.

Also, there is a misnomer about how cumbersome full plate was. It was actually quite mobile all things considered and a knight in full plate could get up on his horse by himself.  Every section of the armour is individually attached to the knight allowing movement.  Obviously not as nimble as someone in leather but when you consider than leather armour was almost useless against anything but the weakest of blows (it wasn't meant to STOP a weapon from hurting you...just slowing it down a bit so it might not kill you immediately)

But this isn't a thread about what terrifies 13th century medieval peasants. 13th century medieval peasants would also be terrified of threadbare tunic and pants wearing men on horses taller than you coming at full speed, because they have no combat training, no weapons, and no way of protecting themselves.

This is a thread about what sort of armour looks visual appealing. And wearable boiler is not visually appealing.

Medieval full plate often looks like it has a paunch, I could do without that.  And the helmets look kind of silly.  But I don't think those are a requirement for realistic looking armour.

You're serious?  After the examples you posted?

Pray tell me, - what is there to laugh about?

One comment I'd like to make, is that we shouldn't get too hung up on the kind of decorations which were actually used during different historic medieval periods and in different medieval regions. Obviously, that's a matter of that culture's particular fashion and taste. Ferelden is something different.

But the example they do set, is that suits of armor typically could be decorated, and probably was, if it was made to higher quality for an important client.

And the way those decorations were made, they also served a purpose. They stiffened the plate or provided reinforcing ridges of thicker material.
