How come the near extinction of the Drell is barely ever mentioned?

But how far could you get with writing Thane before you'd have to decide his race?  And once you do know that he's going to be an alien, wouldn't it be kind of stupid not to tell the art department that they're going to need to work up a new kind of alien?

Sure, it's possible that Bio was really, really stupid about this, but is there any actual evidence that they were? Or do we just have a silly theory that we're discussing because we're bored?

Because the Drell were probably the most useless race made in the entire series, right along with the Vorcha.

I mean seriously, you only ever see Thane and his son in the games. Not a single other Drell is sighted (oh wait! there was one other one, but he was in a DLC). It just drives home the thought that they just made the Drell to make Thane an alien, I guarantee he was originally supposed to be a human

Or it could be that you don't see many drells because they are extremely rare due o the fact that they nearly got wiped out. It wouldn't make much sense for drell to sit around in every shady bar you visit. They are probably only 0.000000001% of the galactic population or something like that.
