Hi All.  I'd really like to get into reading the Dragon Age books...I know of some of the titles that are out now or due out soon, but I'd like to be able to read them in chronological order (if that applies) so my question is what are the titles I should look for at my local bookstore?

What I don't want to have happen is buying a random book at the store because (the title says "Dragon Age") only to have it be the middle or end book of a particular series, because then I will feel like I'm missing out on important details.   I remember I did that with the Star Wars novels; I wanted the first book that took place after ROTJ, but wound up buying a book about Rogue Squadron....only to find out that that book in itself would branch off to become an entire series in and of itself along with all the other core books from the Star Wars EU.  So then I wound up going back and scrounging for the previous books in the whole line-up.

If I'm going to read the Dragon Age books (in preparation for Inquisition) I'd like to be able to start fresh and read them in an order that makes sense.   Anyways, I'm just wondering what the titles are that I should look for.... I know there's a bunch of graphic novels/comics that are out too, but I'm interested in only the mass market paperbacks.

Thanks

There are currently 4 books:

The Stolen Throne and Calling are prequels to Dragon Age: Origins, so you can probably skip them.

Asunder and Masked Empire are settled between DA2 and Inquisition and it was confirmed, that some characters from these books will be in Inquisition. They also give you insight what happens in Thedas and Orlais especially right now. So I would recommend to read those two. (Also they are best written, in my opinion.)

Pre Dragon Age: Origins

1 The Stolen Throne

2 The Calling

Post Dragon Age II

3 Asunder - This takes place after you see Hawke walking away at the end of DA2, but before Cassandra goes to Kirkwall to interrogate Varric about the events.

4 The Masked Empire - Partially overlaps events in Asunder.

5 The Last Flight (not yet released) - From the description it seems that this takes place in the current timeline, but there also might be a lot of flashbacks to the Fourth Blight (400 years ago). So, depending on your preference, you might be able to count this first.

[edit]

If you also consider reading the comics, you can read those any time after Throne and Calling.

I would read stolen throne you can kinda skip the calling, asunder is fantastic and so far masked empire is interesting.

I've read both Stolen Throne and The Calling and I have to say the former is significantly better. Not on the level of any decent fantasy novel I dare say though. I reads more like a videogame novelization, which I think is quite accurate as Mr. Gaider is (at least to my best knowledge (which is admittedly not thorough)) is primarily a videogame story writer. But back to my initial point, Stolen Throne feels like it gives more content on the setting of Dragon Age and Thedas in general, whereas The Calling feels little more than a short introduction to the game's expansion.

The main plot of The Calling has direct bearing on the events in DAA though... We also see a young Duncan and learn quite a bit of his history. What happens with Maric is also somewhat important, especially if you're interested in the whole Alistair parentage thing, and of course a character from The Calling is in Asunder (though briefly).

You can "kinda skip" all of them, but each has interesting nuggets that relate to the games, past and future. Although I do think that at this point, with DAI looming, that Asunder and Masked Empire are more or less required reading because they have a direct connection to the post DA2 world, leading into DAI.

I enjoyed all of them, I get a lot of time to read at work so I get through them pretty fast.  Personally I'd read them all if you have the time, it's always nice to get more background information about characters you've already met or heard of, and ones that you may yet meet ;)

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne and The Calling are two books that happen before Dragon Age Origins and give more context on some of the characters that appear in DAO.

Dragon Age Asunder and The Masked Empire happen after Dragon Age 2. The upcoming book The Last Flight is probably set after Dragon Age 2, but probably talks about events that happened well before the Dragon Age games (because of the griffins). The World of Thedas is basically a book wiki of the dragon age universe (it's not like the other books, so it's not as necessary to have if you want more stories).

Reading them out of order is not the end of the world though. I read Asunder first, then the Stolen Throne, then The Masked empire and now I'm reading the Calling. The only books that are better to read in the right order are the Stolen Throne and the Calling, because they have some of the same characters.

So, for all the books that are out now the chronological order is: The Stolen Throne, The Calling, Asunder, The Masked Empire.

Enjoy!

A simple google search brings up the wiki which lists all of the DA books, including graphic novels.

This is exactly the order I read. Finished The Calling 2 days ago. Liked all of them, but in my prefference is The Masked Empire > Asunder > The Stolen Throne > The Calling.
