So I take it people only want slim humans with pointy ears when they say elves then? no truly unique characteristics?

Well, that's what elves are. In terms of physical appearance, anyway.
I could do without the pointy ears, personally

if you are going for the original elves from norse mythology than yes they looked like humans, didn't even have pointy ears. but in modern fiction elves are always slim pointy eared humans, why can't we have more elves like that of the elder scrolls where they don't look human at all.

You mean her...?
Nah... I think the elf looks a lot better than her. The elf has that royalty look about her.
That's a scary charicature

Elves in skyrim have golden skin, and golden eye, they descend from the gods directly.

LOOK AT THIS MAGNIFICENT BASTARD! THOSE ARE THE EARS OF THE GODS!

Personally I loved the design of the Elves in DA2. I'm not sure if the real issue people have is that they didn't look like a race of super models or something just as dumb. Whatever the reason may be, the render for DA:I elves looks pretty good. Perhaps a bit to much in the direction of human looking, but not as bad as the DAO elves.
They look pretty hot in DA2 anyway.

Speaking broadly I'd quite like to see elves that didn't have the pointy ears. Wouldn't fit DA of course, since "knife ear" and "flat ear" are part of the setting, .
I mean, there's nothing in LotR or the Hobbit which says elves have pointy ears. It's vaguely suggested in some of Tolkien's other writings, but clearly not especially important.
Why can't elves be defined by their immortality and affinity to magic, rather than physical differences?
Arya didn't have ears in the film version of Eragon

If you not important you will be ugly.
Reminds me of the pics of the background characters in the Omega DLC someone took using Flycam

Why on earth would we think of "truly unique characteristics" when we're talking about a standard fantasy race with (by this time) standard features of looking like slim humans with pointy ears? If we think of "truly unique characteristics," we think of truly unique races that have never been seen in other media before. Like, say, Qunari.
When people think of fantasy dwarves, they think of short, stout, often bearded humans, but I don't see anyone complaining about the standard fantasy dwarf design for the Dragon Age series. If you're not going to complain about DA dwarves looking like short, stout humans, why complain about DA elves?

Tolkien elves, I think, didn't have point ears. So that would be more in-tune with the trope.

DA has an awesome race with unique characteristics - the qunari. Note how they fact they look nothing like stereotypical elves means they get a name that tells us they are nothing like stereotypical elves.

Elves have been portrayed as slender, sometimes short humans with pointed ears in a lot of fantasy work. The difference is in their characteristics being "exotic" by human standards, but that's fairly subjective. For some it's slanted almond shaped eyes or very angular features. For DA2 it looks like the shape of the nose and the size of the iris is different. I'd personally prefer if they could blend how the elves looked from DA:O with how they looked in DA2, but they might have done that and we have to wait and see what the character creator shows us.

Thank you for this. I'm really sick of all the "but the elves need to look drastically different from what we're used to in standard fantasy!" I'm looking at you, BioWare. But thankfully the art department seems to have come around for Inquisition.
