Depends on the demon. Each demon, even those of the same type, have differing personalities.

In general I'd say that is going to be a bad idea. Every demon we've encountered in the series has been malevolent, and people who do deals with them more often than not end up getting royally screwed. The demons want what they want and mortals are just pawns in their schemes.
Of course that all being said if one of the confirmed companions was a demon, of course I'd still have the player character recruit him/her/it. Curiosity might kill the cat but I'm not going to miss out on companion content.

My own theory is that he is a demon turning into a spirit.
Would be novel in the series.

After Anders? No just no.
And it's generally not a good idea to think you can control and outwit entities far more powerful and intelligent then you are.

For me it depends as much on the character that I am playing as on the demon itself. A more upright character with strict ethics might not recruit a demon because they can be malicious and dangerous. A more open minded character could feel something good in the demon. It really depends. But I tend to say yes, I would recruit a demon because I am curious what happens. Also, some demons can be very entertaining

I see Cole as more of a spirit (hence his confusion and not knowing quite what he was) who is on the cusp of turning demonic. I dare say the intriguing part of recruiting him will be whether you influence him for better or worse. So he has his own agenda/aim in life (like Justice) but is greatly influenced by the person he most identifies with. In the past this was Rhys, until Lambert ruined that relationship, hence Cole turning nasty where Lambert was concerned. Again this is like Justice but whereas he was co-existing with Anders and so couldn't help but be warped by his emotions, Cole will be more independent but nevertheless will probably take his lead from the type of Inquisitor you are.
So in answer to the poster, it has become increasingly apparent throughout games and books that the tag spirit/demon is not a simply one. I think Merrill had it right when she said all spirits are dangerous and so you have to be careful in your dealings with them. But since it is not immediately apparent that a person is "possessed" by a spirit, you could easily recruit one without knowing it (see latest novel), so if it was upfront in telling you its nature then for me that would be a plus for recruiting them but would keep a wary eye on them all the same.

Demons are spirits. The only difference between a demon and a spirit is semantics. If it focuses on a 'good' theme, like Justice, Faith, Charity, its called a spirit. If it focuses on a 'bad' theme, like Rage, Pride, Desire, its called a demon. In Masked Empire we meet one that focuses on choice, and it calls itself a spirit, and its pretty obvious what others would classify it as...

No never, not even on an evil character. Working with demons has never benefitted anyone in DA, it's always backfired. Uldred anyone? Or how about Sophia Dryden? Conner? Merril? I may do evil things with my Inquisitor but I'd like them to be smart enough not to do something as stupid and dangerous as allying themselves with a demon.
Uldred didn't work with a demon. Merril was being stupid. Sophia had no way to control one.

Well obviously it would depend on my character
Some would say yes, others would say no.

Why?
cause bad spirits are called demons logically good ones would be called angels sence angels are the opposite of demons, thread not about cole.

Well theres Cole. He's a demon or at least a spirit of some type. But as for a regular demon? /shrug why not.

I'd love to recruit a demon. Cole is way too mild to fill the demon spot, imo

I took Death's Hand in a few Jade Empire playthroughs, so that's a yes for me (on some playthroughs anyway).
Why: It is always interesting to see things from a so-called 'evil' point of view. In JE Death's Hand view was that the strong took what they could, and the weak didn't deserve what they couldn't protect. In DA the demons would have a very different point of view, as morals are as foreign to any spirit (good or bad) as everything else human (elven/qunari/dwarven). They don't see things as good or bad, they simply see experiences, and ideas, and potentials, and they act. Justice is the same way, he sees injustice and is compelled to fight it, whether that injustice is for the good of society (say letting a visiting noble murderer go free to prevent a war) is irrelevent.
As for Cole: I don't think he is really a demon/spirit, at least not anymore. He thinks for himself and makes choices, something no spirit can do, and doesn't fixate on any specific idea/concept like a true spirit would. I think he's evolved from whatever type of spirit he was before to something truly unique.

Nope, Demons are malicious, self-serving and they bow to no authority.

If the option was a Sloth demon I'd recruit it in a heartbeat. They're my favorite type of demon and they come across as the most intelligent of the demons. There's also canon evidence that they can do acts that help other while not having an ulterior motive (Sloth from mage origin)
I can just imagine right before the final fight of the game and everyone's going over battle strategy then Sloth comes in and says
Sloth: Hey everyone let's all relax in front of the fire!
Inquisitor: No this is very important we need to -
Sloth: I made tea.
(Everyone is sitting in a long couch in front of the fireplace sipping tea then cut to the battle)
