Title pretty much says it all. Can you go attack him head on when Morrigan suggests it after Lothering? Or do I have to wait till closer to the end of the game?
How long before you can get the secret companion?

You only get him for 2 hours.

Seems odd that you het him at a point where you may not even get him to level up a single time. You don't even get to choose any of his stats or talents.

Who's this Secret Companion everyone is discussing? I just completed my first play-through of the game and never (knowingly) encountered him/her.

Oh you encountered him all right.
At the Landsmeet, Riordan says, "Wait, there is another option...."
The option he suggests, is the secret companion.
And this thread is going to turn into a flame war in 3...2...1....

He's not really that much of a secret. Think about it for a moment and you'll figure out who it is, especially if you've already completed the game once. To say he's a "secret companion" is like calling Zevran a pious nun.

Depends on how many side quests you leave to do until after you get the secret companion...but of course you have to make sure none of them involve Redcliffe...since going there after the Landsmeet leads to the ending sequence.

When I played, I knew there was one secret companion but not who it was until I got there. At least three reasonable candidates occurred to me during the game, I could name two or three more unlikely ones.
Yes, the one it turned out to be was at the top of my list (and I was a little diasppointed, since #2 was much more appealing IMHO) but that is different from "knowing."

There have been xbox players saying they've been able to take the secret companion to Return to Ostagar and found the resulting commentary interesting.

The secret companion has some interesting conversation snippets and gives a lot of backstory even without RtO. But the lamppost-licker/little pike twirler has equally interesting snippets there as well. It's worth 2 different playthroughs with both imo.
