Can someone explain to me what happened in this screen?

Last time, I tried to keep my enthusiasm and make a joke of it.

So the "F" section is a part of a 3D skybox, and before I got to the edge of the level (via a detached flycam) where I could confirm it was not genuinely terrain, I had traveled a few kilometers in the game (according to the editor, that spot on the mountain range is a bit more than 4km away) and looking back at the keep , LOD had actually despawned it because it was so far away.

It is the same mountain range as the ones on the left (the farthest ones obviously).

Spikes are an aesthetic choice, the sloppy rock probably covered a broken seam, and the Low Res Mountain is a result of a streaming-based engine that loads LoD and brings in more detail as you close in.

None of this is new in gaming. In some ways you should be glad to see imperfections, it means they aren't taking the screenshots through touch ups.

Oh ok, it's just me then. I thought I saw rocks merging in an attempt at making creative world building, crafted metal spikes growing out of natural rocks and a 1998 .jpg on the far right.

Topic closed then!

It's just a screenshot. What's the deal with being so picky?

Let me guess... You're a PC gamer, right? :D

Visual imperfections in a game isn't news, at this point it's just a transparent attempt at trolling.

Someone at marketing is either very lazy or just doesn't understand what they're supposed to be doing.

Putting something like this

Party_06_WM_web.jpg

up on your official site is laughable.

But those textures on side F of the mountain are unusually low res compared to the other side. The UVW mapping looks terrible.

While I'm glad that these screenshots aren't touched up, these visual glitches are kinda immersion breaking.

Honestly, I'd rather the pre release screenies be truly representative of the game than have some marketing monkey cherry-pick them for us. Spikes aside (what is it with the fecking spikes Bioware?), the game looks terrific to me.

Off topic...Why is it that everytime I see a new pic of Cassandra, she's some how curvier? Not that's a bad thing.

What's wrong with that pic, exactly? I guess I play too many older games to notice a problem.

Look at the elf dudes right hand. He's somehow pulling a Fenris as an elven mage.

How can you be immersed in a screenshot?

Playing the real game, you have a lot more going on drawing your attention away from far details. When I Play Skyrim, I don't stop every frame and analyze the low-res mountains. Admittedly the highlighted texture is notably poor even in comparison to the rest of the LOD Scaling, but it's a screenshot. It's way easier to spend more time on each individual frame here.

A tiny bit of clipping, again signalling it's raw gameplay footage and not pre-rendered and post-edited trash.

Bigger disappointment in that screen is the low-resolution textures on the eroded parts of the rock. Just because I'm an apologist doesn't mean I don't see this stuff, I just find it really hard to care. The only company and engine I hold to graphical accountability is Crytek, because they "Pride" themselves on the stance that 70% of a game is in graphical prowess.

Personally, I don't mind this. Being through the 16 bit, 32-bit and hd wars has taught me that graphics does not really matter. I look down on anyone that hates on a game or call a game great based on graphics alone.

It is immersion breaking for me if the visual quality is not consistent. This game has some pretty amazing lighting but it's marred by low poly meshes and textures with terrible UVW mapping. You're right, I will get used to it when playing the actual game, but for now stuff like these really bug me. Along with those godawful spikes.

See, this is why I need professionals. I'd have never noticed that on my own.

But aren't funny hands a DA tradition?

Well I think the cutout shape in the W circle looks like a bear, and the one inside the T circle looks like a wolf. Maybe there's a bunny-shaped cloud somewhere? Does that help? ;)

Heh. I thought it was a fancy distance fog effect rather than just low-res. A mountain in the distance shouldn't look all that ckear even without the smoke effect we see elsewhere in the pic.

Huge, misshapen hands are a tradition.

Ghost hands moving through rocks is not traditional.

Some of these posts are kind of pathetic, in a grasping-at-anything-to-discredit-the-game-or-it's-designers kind of way. Particularly since these are just a couple stills (lol at the "immersed in screenshots" thing). Yeah, we get it, you don't like spikes or LOD textures.

I can't think of one example of a videogame that didn't have graphical glitches, LOD textures, and clipping. What is the actual point of this post other than to point out these things exist, everybody knows they do, and most people accept them because they are notoriously difficult to avoid in games. In other words, lol deal with it.
