Last time, I tried to keep my enthusiasm and make a joke of it.

So the "F" section is a part of a 3D skybox, and before I got to the edge of the level (via a detached flycam) where I could confirm it was not genuinely terrain, I had traveled a few kilometers in the game (according to the editor, that spot on the mountain range is a bit more than 4km away) and looking back at the keep , LOD had actually despawned it because it was so far away.
It is the same mountain range as the ones on the left (the farthest ones obviously).
It's actually not. It's clearer to see in the video, but I suspect you're buying into some level of visual cues that the sun is a point of light that isn't effectively an infinite distance away (i.e. all the light waves are effectively parallel). What you're seeing is the same visual effect that causes the beams of light to be seen at all. The light is coming through the split in the branch, which is why at slightly different angles (seen in the video) the branch "appears" to slightly bend.
Unless you have decided that the tree branch suddenly becomes rigidly straight with no deformations or organic looking growth that conveniently goes behind the tree, which the rest of the branch does not do.
It's an optical illusion and your brain is filling in what it thinks it sees based on a still image.

I'm also wondering if the mountain on the right is not the same mountain on the left, but rather another optical illusion that causes people to assume it is.
I'm heading in to work tomorrow so if I remember I'll take a peek.
so the translucent branch doesnt exist? Or is the illusion that its behind the tree?
I can see what you mean, but I dont quite grasp it
What you're seeing is streaks of light coming in front of the tree, and the branch creates a shadow.
While I agree that it is definitely an optical illusion, I'm stumped on trying to figure out why it's occurring with this image. I don't recall any direct examples of an optical illusion that could replicate the effect in the screenshot, but it is possible that the in game lighting system is hitting the right spot to cause it to happen.
I think it's similar to the Ames Room where our mind is placing the left tree in a different place in the 3D space than it actually is, due to assorted visual cues to make us see it that way. I think I was putting the tree farther back than I expected. I also know that mentally I place the light source just beyond the trees, which also isn't the case.
Example of Ames Room:
I'm not sure where this was taken specifically in the game, as I'd like to see if my assumptions are correct.
That said the one thing I do not understand is why they used that image of Solas's hand clipped right inside the rock. That sort of clipping isn't something you can remove from a game, but it would have been so easy to simply retake that shot a foot to the right.
It would depend on noticing it (I didn't notice it until people pointed it out. My attention gravitated towards their faces) before the picture went live. You could argue we should go over the entire picture more thoroughly, but it's also a reality that it's often people like us (QA playing through the game, or designers, or Mike, or anyone) to create this footage for screenshots to be taken. At this point, is it worth having one of recreate the entire shot for that as opposed to working on something else? I'd say no, but I think I am also more tolerant towards WIP screenshots than people in general.
