Can someone explain to me what happened in this screen?

People, the problem isn't the game having those imperfections. They still have 5 more month to polish it.

The problem is BW using those pictures, with those imperfections, to promote the game. I mean, how the employee that take and upload those pics didn't notice? That's sloppy...

I barely notice most of these problems unless they are specifically pointed out to me.

Hi Allan. I'm not sure if you're referring to the same spot, but I think the poster was talking about to the right of the picture and not the center.

I'm not really one to notice these sorts of things but, hey, we all got our different expectations.  ;)

We are talking about the same spot.

EDIT: To be clear, when people first pointed it out to me I thought it was a mistake too.

Hell, someone did point out the hand thing to me and I still missed it. I thought the hand was just supposed to be behind the rock.

How certain are you, on a scale of 1-10?

This is not exactly my point.

I don't care much about marketing, that BioWare is owned by EA, that they made mistakes in the past or that video games were better in the good old days when we lived in the garden of Eden, eating flowers. I don't have much issue with cliping or even low texture quality (there will always be some cliping). The screen with Solas was more funny and clumsy than heartbreaking.

This is troll post, folks. The purpose of this post was to get people to argue/defend the game so the OP could feel superior about their "accomplishments".

I spent and still spend hours communicating my excitment for DA:I. Life really is too short to wish bad things for BioWare or to "troll" (is that how people dismiss things nowadays?).

I have more concerns about things looking out of place and unnatural. This setting doesn't look natural or plausible to me, i.e. crafted by people, demons, nature or time. It looks like it's made by computer artists. This bad impression is even reinforced by the background texture, which is the only one of my concerns that is likely to be changed.

But again I'm a PC user, so I'm a nitpicking elitist who has criticised something, and that's why my opinions are not valid.

I'm also wondering if the mountain on the right is not the same mountain on the left, but rather another optical illusion that causes people to assume it is.

I'm heading in to work tomorrow so if I remember I'll take a peek.

Me too

I have to say that I care only moderately for graphics, for good or bad

While I agree that it is definitely an optical illusion, I'm stumped on trying to figure out why it's occurring with this image. I don't recall any direct examples of an optical illusion that could replicate the effect in the screenshot, but it is possible that the in game lighting system is hitting the right spot to cause it to happen.

EDIT: I found something vaguely similar.

300px-Kanizsa_triangle.svg.png

That's referred to as a Kanizsa Triangle. There isn't actually a triangle present in the image, but our brain is creating one. The other option would be an ambiguous image, but usually you're unable to see what the actual image is. Around now is when I wish I paid more attention in my Sensory and Perception class since I'm still unsure if it is the cause of the tree branch issue.

The branch exists, but the translucent part of it is the optical illusion.

The branch exists. Put your hand over the rest of the picture and blink a few times. The line is there. It is however, not a big deal. People are just super picky these days.

The branch thing just looks like a shadow on the tree in front. A very strangely placed shadow, but a shadow nonetheless.

In a way I don't mind the small issues because they show that it is 100% in-game screenshots, which is good because it means they are clearly not editing them before releasing them, and all games have these minor visual flaws.

That said the one thing I do not understand is why they used that image of Solas's hand clipped right inside the rock. That sort of clipping isn't something you can remove from a game, but it would have been so easy to simply retake that shot a foot to the right.

This thread is taking pedantry to a new level. It's one thing to decry a new art style, or the overall quality of textures, as was done by many with DA2, but to pick apart individual things in still images when we haven't even played the game is just absurd to me.

What you're seeing is streaks of light coming in front of the tree, and the branch creates a shadow.

I think it's similar to the Ames Room where our mind is placing the left tree in a different place in the 3D space than it actually is, due to assorted visual cues to make us see it that way.  I think I was putting the tree farther back than I expected.  I also know that mentally I place the light source just beyond the trees, which also isn't the case.

Example of Ames Room:

I'm not sure where this was taken specifically in the game, as I'd like to see if my assumptions are correct.

It would depend on noticing it (I didn't notice it until people pointed it out.  My attention gravitated towards their faces) before the picture went live.  You could argue we should go over the entire picture more thoroughly, but it's also a reality that it's often people like us (QA playing through the game, or designers, or Mike, or anyone) to create this footage for screenshots to be taken.  At this point, is it worth having one of recreate the entire shot for that as opposed to working on something else?  I'd say no, but I think I am also more tolerant towards WIP screenshots than people in general.

People your not seeing a branch, your seeing it's shadow.

eVstqxO_zps912f353b.jpg<The light passes between the two, but is blocked the by the branch.

This caused a shadow to be cast on the trunk in the foreground. That's why the branch appears to bend at the point it meets the tree.

Someone at marketing is either very lazy or just doesn't understand what they're supposed to be doing.

Putting something like this

Party_06_WM_web.jpg

up on your official site is laughable.

Am I the only one who has no problem with this? Its very clear that a rock is in front of him and his hand is behind it, not clipping at all.

Granted it is hard to see as the dark rock sort of blends in with the color behind him, but it is clearly visible that the rock is in front of him and his hand behind it.

I don't understand: is it "very clear" or "hard to see"?

No need to be in bad faith, it's not a big deal.

I suppose it is in the eye of the beholder, as I always thought his hand was behind the rock, no closer examination needed as nothing looked out of place to me.

I believe alot of the confusion arises from the inability to differentiate between the multiple rock faces that are in the shot. Here is a little diddy i did to help illustrate:

rR7y1ow.png

The shadow is the most clear indicator that the rock is in fact in front.

^ It does look like it's clipping to me. Then again, I didn't even notice it until it was pointed out, nor do I really care. Unless that is a pre-scripted cutscene, the odds that I will go by that exact rock, at that exact angle, while playing the game are probably very low.

I think you're right.

It's just the shadow on the glowing side of the foreground tree that looks like an extension of the branch.

I don't think it's becoming to insult the developers by calling their efforts laughable when the game is still a work in progress.

Even still, don't you think it's better to enjoy the whole package rather than nitpick minor details and ruin the whole experience for yourself?

Bioware needs to reveal something soon or otherwise we will start to judge these pics pixel by pixel

What, can't you see the arrow chiseled into the rock? It's pointing to buried treasure. Bring a shovel!

To be honest, the spikes are probably there to detract varieties of folk from climbing. Don't think it would do that good of a job when you can, y'know, just climb between them.

Frankly, it must be hot as hell for the dune to be melting. Might want to bring several pairs of baker's mitts not only for your Quizzie's hands and feet but for the hands and feet of his or her companions.
