Please, improve the codex! The DA:O one was alright, but still a bit dull. I suggest adding images.

Perhaps something like this? (from the Gungan Frontier Pc game)

Or perhaps in style of the skyrim inventory?

I don't care about images but I'd like some of the more interesting/important codex entries narrated. Like they had in Mass Effect.

I just hope the text is big enough to be read on a SDTV, but that seems to be fading away anymore so it probably won't be

Man, I hear you. I don't have a lot of patience for codex entries because every game company seems to think 8 point font is an acceptable text size.  We don't all own gigantic televisions.

When I lived with my dad I had to do all my gaming on a tv smaller than your average computer screen. I know your pain... I just don't care as far as inquisition gos because I have a huge plasma now. :P

Detailed codex about monsters would be nice, like listing what poisons/elements are most effective,resistance,can/can't stun, etc.

It's not essential but it would be nice. Probably makes me even more interested while reading the codex.

and think of the people that should read the subtitles because they don't speak fluent english (or any other language that's voiced DA)....I think I've lost a good chunk of sight thanks to the mini subtitles of DAO/2. <_<

I read the codex on internet to save my poor eyes.

I really hope they don't do a voice over. I read much, much faster than someone can read aloud, so a voiced codex means I have to mute the game to read the entry.

Okay. So I was thinking about this a lot recently. Not just the codex, but the whole journal area of the game.

1. I'd love a proper bestiary in addition to the codex flavour text about the creatures/demons/etc we face.

2. I wish the codex entries that were relevant to quests were in a separate area than the rest of the codex, making it easier to find.

3. I agree with larger text for the entries.

4. NO VOICE OVERS. God, I hated that. I don't like listening to someone monotonously reciting text that I can read for myself.

5. I'd like to bring back Heroic Achievements. I liked knowing how many things I killed and what sort of things I killed.

6. I wouldn't mind if the journal/codex area had some sort of monitoring about stats if relevant to an achievement. Say, if you need to kill 50 things, I'd like for there to be a place were I can find out my progress on that front.

7. I wouldn't mind at least a bit of art in the entries. That wouldn't be bad at all.

8. I also wouldn't mind if they brought back the recent-conversation log, especially if I accidentally get distracted during a cut scene (children, cats phone) and miss what's being said. I'd love to be able to just read it instead of having to reload an old save, especially if it's been a while.

9. A sort function. I would like the option of sorting by most recent, so I can find recent entries easily. Half the time, when I go to read an entry, the entire thing is still 'haven't been read yet' highlighted, which isn't a useful indicator.

I rarely read the codex, tbh. I'd rather find a plethora of well-written books to fill my keep's library with. Assuming there's a library. ;)

I'm ok with either/or,  as long as there's something that gives background on a lot of the things, even items, and I can read it.

I would love something like a cross between the ME codex and the DAO journal thing, but with bigger font. I have a big enough TV, but I tend to sit a ways back to avoid further harming my already awful eyesight. Sometimes I'd have to move to sit on the floor instead so I'd be close enough to read the entries on the occasions that they weren't narrated.

I second the bestiary idea; knowing what attacks are more effective on which enemies and having details about their behavior and territories would be great.

I have fond memories of the ME1 codex reading entries to me while I took a snack break. But I would have preferred him to sound less announcer-like because I kinda felt like he was trying to over-sell me on things I was already interested in.

I would like to see a lot of entries in DA:I, though, especially in regards to things not covered in the previous games or that were only covered in the novels.

I was facetiously suggesting that by relying on the text alone and ignoring the voice you would miss any meaning imparted by the tone, as what you described as your behaviour with the Codex matches my behaviour with the voiced dialogue - I always read ahead and skip the voice.

absolutely. In DA2 all the rare weapons and armature that should have been rare items feel incredibly shallow without knowing their "story". I still find myself in Origns choosing a weapon instead of another just because I like what they "are". My City Elf killed the Archdemon with Fang (her mother's weapon) and Duncan's sword. just for their simbolism. and Alistair had Duncan's shield and Cailan's sword.

Is idiotic, but I really love the story behind the items. It remind me of LOTR.

Not at all. I tried to make the weapons and armour "special" to the people using them. What sucks is that for Alistair, you've got two of Duncan's swords, Cailan's sword, Maric's sword, Cailan's armour, Duncan's sheild, Cailan's shield etc. Too many "special" choices.

I feel as if they're watching from the afterlife, thinking, "Use mine..."

The codex should use gratuitous amounts of concept art. Thematically it makes more sense for Dragon Age if the "Codex" is supposed to simulate a world compendium, since high-resolution 3D renders and/or Photography wouldn't be technologies they had. Maybe I'm overthinking it though.

As for Voice Over, it all depends on who does it. Mass Effect's VO codex guy did a phenomenal job in my opinion. So much so that even with my reading ability I enjoyed just sitting and listening to it. We call that the Morgan Freeman effect.

yes, expecially with "return to Ostagar" there was an over abundance of potentially "special" items...still, the feature was cute, the absence of the little description/story made the item in DA2 very shallow. :(

I'd say as long you can switch it on and off, it's not a bad idea. But in Mass Effect it made sense: You had the Omnitool on your hand and could review the codex stuff there and have voice. In Dragon Age, the codex entries are probably books. While magical talking books could be an option, it would be a bit silly...

I liked DA:O PC-version codex. The PS3/xbox360 version was a bit hard to read, never mind what television you used. The only problem in PC-version codex was, for me, that I couldn't really follow up which was the newest if I got several entries at once or in a row.. While I could read them all, this disturbed me a little bit.

Ya I never once cared about any of the items I got in DA2 because they didn't have descriptions.  And they added so many new junk items that the descriptions on them could of been hilarious
