In the character's defense it is possible that Bioware hadn't yet decided on that backstory for Duncan. That scene was written before the books, when Duncan might have been viewed as a devoted Warden from start to finish.
Fair point. But he's still deluded about the Grey Wardens. He doesn't view them as "grey", but "white", if you will.
Even Gaider intends these kind of varied opinions though. His latest blog says as much.
"You can love Alistair for being earnest, idealistic, and awkward. You can hate Alistair for being a stubborn, dense man-child. These qualities exist at the same time together, just as with real people. I enjoy writing Alistair and appreciate him as a character even though sometimes he is an assh*le, incapable of self-reflection. It doesn’t bother me if someone picks out the negative more than the positive—it means I was successful in putting it there, and people are going to respond to such things differently."
On the Wynne note, it was interesting to see her in my last playthrough. I sided with mages, and let her live -- but I didn't recruit her. She still showed up in Awakening, but more like a distant admirer. She still knew I was a mage from the Circle, but we weren't close. It was a nice touch. I liked her like this.
