Didn't the ferelden circle get their exercise time taken away because Anders tried to escape during it one time? Or something like that, it was an offhanded comment by the mage in witch hunt.

Nothing is stopping them from doing jumping jacks in their free time.

True. Although I have difficulty exercising with people watching and for them the templars are always watching.

I guess I can just see how you wouldn't get much exercise when you're trapped inside with a bunch of other people all the time.

The way Anders tells it, there was a lot of exercise going on.  B)

Finn mentioned something about mages having outdoor exercises (until Anders jumped into the lake) and Cole mentions a swimming pool in the White Spire.

But I think Qunari are just naturally big.

Plus, it's not like they have elevators. If nothing else, all tower mages should have really buff calves. reasonable hikers.

There's a difference between this V

Spoiler

One looks like the hulk (The usual Warrior-like Qunari we meet in both games) and the former looks like a Qunari that is athletic and stays and shape.

I can't be the only one to prefer to have my mages have some meat on their bones. Why do they always need to be the pasty, bookworm type? What's to stop a mage from keeping in shape?

What's to stop them for porking out, eating fine, fine meals and having a healthy belly?

I demand a big belly/fat body type!

Frak, I'm a mage! I kill my enemies with cosmic energies from a distance. I don't need to move or train myself! That is for the peasants!

Tbh it'd be nice if one day in the future we get 6 body types for each race, even if body sliders never become a thing--an ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph for each gender of each race.

Then only the mesomorphs would be classically 'jacked'

I agree with you totally, but I do want to say that there's a big gulf between being a mesomorph, being fit, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger monsters we see in games.

I think Qunari naturally have that amount of muscle mass, look at silverback Gorillas, they dont lift weights

Silverback Gorillas use their arms for everything. Of course they're gonna have muscle. That isn't a good comparison imo.

Now, Saarebas have giant metal helmets on their head as well as chains to lug around 24/7. I think that's why they are still pretty muscled. The built aspect was just re-using the Qunari model to save time/money.

They use them to walk around and grab things, thats literally it, yet they have the strength of 12 average humans. Any animal will do really, look at dogs, a lot of them naturally have a large frame despite not getting excessive amounts of exercise, its genetics, would you really be surprised that the race with giant horns is also genetically predisposed to having large muscle mass? Having metal helmets doesnt equal muscle gain throughout the body.

There seems to be this prevailing assumption throughout our culture that body types aren't a thing, and any and all differences between bodies must be done through intentional effort. Despite being demonstrably untrue.

Being a ecto/meso/endo doesn't make you lean/muscular/fat. If someone doesn't train, you can barely see a difference. It mostly affects the overall shape of your body. Endomorphs usually gain a good amount of muscle while staying lean. Mesomorphs generally gain more muscle than ectomorphs, but also more fat. Endomorphs are usually stronger, with a square structure, they gain both muscle and fat when bulking. But there isn't a dramatic difference in the end, unless you're on gear. Then everything is amplified.

Qunari bodies are naturally that jacked. It's like how certain breeds of oxen and cattle have more muscle than usual. They don't get any more excercise than other breeds; their bodies just naturally produce that much muscle. In fact, the Qunari probably selectively breed their people like cattle to be stronger.

BTW, the actual reason other apes are stronger than humans is that they have more gross motor muscles built for strength, whereas we have more fine motor muscles built for more precise movements.

I love how magic = muscles made of marshmellow and bones of spun sugar.

Its true mages don't have to be physically weak but a certain mage from Dragonlance.. Raistlin was a physical weak and constantly coughing and coughing up blood (if I'm not mistaken) (been awhile since I've read good ol dragonlance) and he kicked some serious ass so it's not like they NEED to be strong.

There is also the super fat Body 4 Sorcerer/Sages (basically Mages) in SWTOR so clearly body type doesn't matter. But seeing Darth Mclarge and thinking after he casts maybe 2 or 3 force powers then falling on his knee's and going * oh god just gimme a moment and i'll be able to continue* makes me laugh my ass off.

Yes, I believe one of the senior mages was trying to encourage them getting involved in training exercises or some such.   Anders may have had some affect on them being allowed outside for this but the real downer was the entire Circle being overwhelmed by demons.       There was no real reason why a mage who wanted to stay fit could not.     In DAO I always took the arcane warrior spec and I felt that part of what the spirit taught you was the sort of exercises you needed to do to stay in shape and be capable of wearing armour effectively, not just some convenient spell that allowed it, even though the stat concerned was magic as opposed to strength.

Back in the D&D days, I liked to play a warrior/mage combo, so my mage always had good strength in addition to brains.   Not some muscle bound beefcake but just nicely toned.

Qunari have to be naturally jacked.. a skinny Qunari goes in the same league as a Dwarf without a beard(or without chest hair.. Varric ftw)... just saying.
