Regardless it does emphasize the default, and even some people who dont normally play default felt obligated to due to there is no way beardy mcBeardedson with blood scar nose is the same guy as mine. And FemHawke wasnt much better. And also why their looks as described make them "more awesome" in Varric's view instead of how they actually look. Unintentional? yes. Nasty implications? Oh yeah.

Wait.. so now it's not about you, but being bothered by what other people feel obligated to play? Why does that matter?

I say just do what you want and have fun.

No, that wasnt what I said at all. I just mean that I wish the default was randomized and that there was no default, but most of all I hope we are not forced to play default even for a little while as it can make anyone, myself included, feel that we are not playing correctly. i dont see anything wrong with that. even more than that, PoC are hardly ever default characters despite being a huge group of players. And forcing PoC characters to be White to be "awesome" has bad implications. if all the default characters look similiar anyway, For Men- White, grizzled, 30 something For Women-White  Spunky 20 something, then really I think defaults would be better randomized. Since they are rarely changed much from the original template, anyway.

Randomized characters nearly always look like crap. Plenty of people want to play such games without fiddling around in a character creation.

I'd like to see a bunch of good, diverse presets, rather than focusing on a single default.  Gives people who don't want to do a lot of work still some choice, and provides some good starting places for people like me who'll spend quarter of an hour trying to make a sufficient badass looking nose.

That is a cool Idea! or maybe a Default for Each Class? Choose a class and Boom Default! Since humans are usually the default, you can have 3 women and 3 men who look visually different.

I think you're responsible for your own feelings. Why do you blame them for feeling obligated? You're free to create what you want, but you act like someone is twisting your arm.

As for the "white" thing, if that's how they envisioned their character (their character, not yours), so be it. I'm brown myself (half white, to be exact.. but did have a minority upbringing), but it doesn't bother me. It doesn't even register as racism. Racism is that one time I was at a rave, and 4 carloads of skinheads showed up, beating the crap out of people. There's still some repugnant crap in this world, and I'm not going to bundle Bioware with any of that.

I played the defaults.  When I got ME1, I played around with the character creator for like 15 minutes and couldn't get the face I want so I just said screw it and went with the default Sheploo which looked much better than any other kind of Shepard I could make.  After that, I pretty much just stuck with the presets in all Bioware games now.  Though the only different thing I did was DA:O where I downloaded a preset face mod that allowed me to make the trailer warden's face.

Another reason why I go with the default looks nowadays is so that I don't get too involved in the story and think of the PC character as 'my' character.  That way I'm not in for a world of disappointment in sequels like some people are going to be in DAI if the Warden and Hawke are in it.

I only wish Garrett (default) had been a close male counterpart to Marian. The concept art was like that at first. link

I wish they had kept this male hawke.

I just liked femhawkes hair way too much to use a custom for her. I ended up using default Shepard as well even when I didn't want to... mainly because female shepard has bad customization in Me1 and maybe Me2... For the males.. I used default shepard but made custom hawke because I hated his beard. But I hate male hawkes voice so I almost never play a male. So I might use the default, idk yet...

I think they generally do a fine job with the default characters, but I couldn't ever bring myself to use any of them, simply because I prefer to have a unique, custom-made character.  That's one of the most fun parts of the game for me, making each character unique and new, it makes each game that much more unique.  Certainly in the case of DA2 especially they did a very nice job with Lady Hawke, and I imagine they'll do a great job with their default in DAI, but I'll still be using the customization options, because it's way too much fun not to :) .

I like the default ones, they did a great job. I always play them first, and then in a second playthrough I try to make a character that looks as good...

Basically they were all really attractive, I would even bang the male Hawke and Shepard lol

IT would be awesome if they made a play-arts-kai figure of default Fem-Hawke, like femshep/sheploo got. Some of the default Inquisitors would be good for Play arts kai figures too.

I usually create a new character from scratch, especially my first couple of times through a specific gender/ race.  Really the Character Creator is the first Role Playing decision you will make.  If you think about it like this, you are creating a certain character to look a certain way to help set up their character.  If you want a stuffy aristocrat, maybe he should look the part, if you want someone who is blunt and plain and kind of rogueish, well ditto, or of course they could reverse expectations, a sexy vixen who is not interested in any of that stuff and is a cold, calculating, bad arse commander of men.

DA2 femhawke and ME3 Femshep I love. They may have not been what I would have created myself but I just love the look they have so much I play as them. I don't know, they just speak to me, I look at those faces and I see my shepard/hawke. And it's a curious thing to me because I always spend like an hour with the character creator but when I went to play those 2 as female (I'm male and my first playthroughs are self insertions, no other reason for me to pick male first) I just saw them and said to myself "That's it. That's the look I want."

So I guess I'll play as default if I happen to love it, and that's hard as I tend to nippick my characters (the best face for me in ME male is default, if I could just give that face green eyes and some hair...in malehawke case I just don't like that hairstyle and beard, so I didn't bother to analyze the model past that.)

I'll probably play it with default face mostly because he looks kinda hot in gameplay trailer (although I need to see his hairstyle to fully judge that). If he has a long hairstyle then I'll stick with customizing. Probably off-topic, but I was always disappointed just how medieval era based fantasy games like dragon age lack short hairstyles for male (yes witcher you) Proper buzzcut would be nice, not that 'hello yes i'm currently going through alopecia' hairstyles.

Default faces; I'll use them if I feel like using them. And if I feel they fit the character I have envisioned.

DA2 just had a window of classes, it wasn't set to anything like a default class or look. Bioware will likely keep moving in that direction, especially as they handed the ME franchise off to someone else.

The Montreal studio has always been BioWare, founded specifically to work on a multi-player project related to ME, what would become the multi-player portion of ME3. Unless they made some recent announcement to the contrary, which I rather doubt.

I will always customize. I don't like for my character to look like anyone else's.

The only default character I played was my Warden. For DA2 and the ME trilogy I would customize a character.

And unless the default human female has long red hair in DAI, I will customize my femquisistor

I always customize.

Mass Effect's Sheploo was as basic and generic as a protagonist could get (white, blue-eyed, named 'John'...). ME3's FemShep just didn't appeal to me (by then, my custom FemShep was more iconic to me then what some default could scrape up).

Garrett Hawke, while I like the fact that he's pretty different looking (amber eyes, beard, dark haired, portrayed as a mage in the trailers), ultimately did not become part of my playthroughs given my attachment to customization. As far as Marian, I don't really like short hair on female protagonists, so she was pretty much a no-go (though I'll argue she looks better than ME3's FemShep).

Origins, well to me there's no 'default' there.

SWTOR Revan (or Meetra Surik, despite being Obsidian/Lucas Arts baby) does not exist to me.

Because creating male characters is a rarity for me, I do customize. (Put it this way, I beat the game six times-one for each Warden Origin and only the Dwarf Noble was male.)

The pre-set females are nice enough I suppose but I just prefer to customize so the character is 'my' character. What I tend to do is find a pre-set that looks pretty good already and just customize the hair style/colour, eye colour, take out most of the makeup. Maybe adjust the nose and that's it.

I never play with a default. I always customize, one of my favorite parts of dragon age and other games is designing my own character.

I prefer to customise in any game that gives the option. Did so in ME and DA so far. I did one default Sheploo, mostly because I wanted to to a Kirk-esque playthrough for a laugh (different LI each game, mostly paragon but going renegade for options where Shep punches someone). And one of my LadyHawkes was the default (minus the bloodsmear), I liked her look. Never got around to a default on FemShep or MaleHawke. And I never wanted to play as any of the defaults on DA:O, they looked too boring.
