Hi folks,

The last couple of days I've been busy playing ME2, and trying to finish the game with the whole team alive. With the last attempt, I saved all my team members, apart from Thane, who wasn't loyal (because for some reason I always fail at his loyalty mission).

Is there any way I can still have him alive, even when not loyal?

Please share your thoughts on this :)

Take care,

S.

Yes.  Provided everyone else is loyal and the ship is upgraded, you can do the following...

1. Send Legion/Tali/Kasumi into the pipe with Miranda/Jacob/Garrus as team leader

2. Send Mordin/Tali/Kasumi/Jack to escort the crew bak

3. Choose Samara/Jack for Biotics and Miranda/Jacob/Garrus as team leader

At this point you have the following...

Grunt/Garrus/Zaeed = 3 * 4 = 12

Miranda/Jacob/Legion/Samara = 4 * 2 = 8

Thane = 1 * 1 = 1

Three of Tali/Kasumi/Mordin/Jack = 3 * 1 = 3

That's (12 + 8 + 1 + 3)/(3 + 4 + 1 + 3) = 2.18 average score.

At this point you need to do two things.

1, do NOT take Thane to the final battle

2, do NOT let the score go below 2.0 average.  This means you can't take two of Garrus/Grunt/Zaeed, for example.  You could, however take, say, Miranda + Garrus.  This would result in (8 + 6 + 1 + 3)/(2 + 3 + 1 + 3) = 2.0 score, so everyone lives.  In fact, you can take one of the "top defense" people and ANY non-Thane other people.  Or, of course, any non-two non "top defense" people (like Samara + Jack).

Why do people take Garrus/Zaeed/Grunt to the final battle? Squadmate weapons do only 30% as much damage as Shepard. People must not be aware of this. Squad mates should be picked based on their powers, not their weapons. If you do that you will find that the top three defense people don't have terribly useful powers against Collectors. The only reason to take one of those three is for RP purposes or because you believe Shepard can solo the last fight anyway. I mean, I guess you can find some marginal use for the G/Z/G guys against Collectors, but other squad mates bring more to the table, such as Miranda/Thane/Samara/Kasumi/Mordin.

Or just do his loyalty mission right...it's not so difficult. Just pay attention when you have to update Thane (I guess you fail at that part).

@MagicalMaster: these calculations, what are they based on?

@themikefest: if you recruit him AFTER the suicide mission, does he then count for the import to ME3?

@Gladiador2: smart guy.... it might not be difficult for YOU, but it was for me ;) (yes, tried it more than a couple of times)

Yes.

The only difference is when first talking with him in ME3, he will not mention his son whereas if you do his loyalty mission he will mention his son

See this thread for everything you need to know about the suicide mission: http://forum.bioware...-final-mission/

It is a sticky thread at the top of this forum.

For me everyone was loyal except Thane and Samara.

I kept everyone alive by not having Thane/Samara be in charge in anything.
At the end I left everyone to fight off the collectors and took Jack/Tali with me to fight the human reaper.

I couldn't be bothered with the math so I just made sure I left all my top defense people (Garrus/Grunt) were there so that the average score thing is at its max. I took those who have the lowest defense but are also loyal to me to come fight the reaper so that i know they'll survive.

My last attempt: first fire squad leader was Garrus, second fire squad leader was Miranda. I let Tali go through the shaft. I took Samara as biotic specialist. I chose Zaeed as an escort for the crew. For the last fight I took Mordin and Thane with me, but as I said Thane died, because he was not loyal. Everyone else made it out alive.

The ability of the squadmates to hold the line during the final battle.  If the defense is strong enough then no one will die -- which means you want to leave people good at defense (like Garrus/Grunt/Zaeed) behind to protect others.

Zaeed as an escort was a grave mistake...he's one of the 3 tanks that should be left out holding the line (along with Grunt and Garrus). If you wanted any chance of Thane getting out alive, you should have left him holding the line, too. Then you should have sent Mordin as a scort, and took two useless (only holding the line..lol) squadmates with you (either Jack, Tali and/or Kasumi).

If everybody else is loyal, it's pretty much guaranteed he survives. That happened to me with Miranda in my very first playthought (all squadmates survived, lost Miranda's loyalty by siding with Jack....also lost the entire crew by not sending an escort with them. I thought that in order to get them to safety, I needed to go thought the entire first part of the Collector base AGAIN, and because I barely survived 'sane', I was like "NO %&%&$&$%%$ WAY!!! GO ALONE!!!" :D lol).

Also, destiny was bound to kill Miranda anyway in that particular playthought....did it in ME3, via denial of Alliance resources :D

Did it again last night, this time I left Thane with the big group holding the line, and took Mordin and Jack with me in the end-fight. No deaths :D

This may help.  It is a flochart showing which party members to choose in order to have them survive.

Here is a thread that is just for the suicide mission.

Also, depending on your playthrough, you can recruit, Thane, Samara, Grunt, Legion(don't give it to Cerberus), Zaeed, Kasumi, and Tali after the suicide mission. Not all at once of course, since you need at least 8 squadmates to go through the Omega 4 relay.
