Aren't polearms really just used either in military formations or for anti-cavalry tactics? The weapon being excluded doesn't make sense, but it doesn't seem to actually fit with the kind of combat RPGs feature (small squad on squad).

Glaives and such are pretty useful for individual fighters who are small in stature, as are quarterstaffs. Pikes are obviously a bit impractical cause they're like 15 feet long, but there are polearms that are useful for individual/small squad fighters esp and can act as a force multiplier.

Halberts, flails, pikes, throwable knifes (not special option in dialogue).

While a great looking sword, I want to see proof on your claim.

While not exactly a scholarly work, that video makes the point about what a beast a messer is fairly well.

Apparently there is a scythe in DAII called the Magister's Scythe. It can be purchased in The Black Emporium.

Anyway here are some cool weapons that could be used I particularly like the Chu-Ko-Nu because of Bianca it is very lore friendly. The Chakram would be cool for ranged combat for a Rogue who could switch to swords when needed.

I never said I doubted the messer's efficiency. I said I doubt it was sharper than a katana. Which is true because they had the finest(by that I mean thinnest, not best) blade until the invention of the scalpel.

Antagonist: "You fool, Inquisitor. You don't have the power to kill me when all the Breaches are open."

Companion: "They're right. We need to fall back. Once we seal off his power, we can take them."

Inquisitor: "Hmm..." *chucks Murder Knife*

*Antagonist killed*

Inquisitor: "Alright, everyone. We're done. Time to clean up."

Thats just not true, there are plenty of blades that are thinner and have even preferred by the Japanese over the Katana, indian swords for example . Sharpness and cutting potential arent necessarily synonymous.

Best example i can find is this, all you need to see is the noted times:

0:50

2:04

The Messer took 4 while the katana took 6. The Japanese were limited on steel, the Europeans were not, their blades could take a better edge and the size of the weapon also helps the cut as seen in the video

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that man's voice? I can smell the testosterone just seeping out from it.

Indeed.

There are a whole host of factors to consider in a sword - What are trying to cut with it? Bare flesh? Armor? How has it been crafted and what materials have gone into it? Size? Technique? Blade cross-section? And so on, and so on...

In that case, I need to have a word with my history teacher.

You'd be surprised what some "experts" say. Its one thing to take the word of a scholar but its another to actually witness real results

Well, we've seen numbers and stuff about the thinness of the different blades, so it's not solely taking their word.

Just as an example of using the right tool for the job...

Katanas, with their high-hardness, clamshell cross-sectioned blade coupled and draw-cut techniques, were very effective against bare flesh - no question. But say... against someone in chainmail armor, all those factors that worked for you against bare flesh, now work against you in trying defeat that armor. Katanas simply weren't designed to cut through that kind of armor.

A European-style "tougher" blade (less hard) with a diamond cross-sectioned blade and a shearing cut technique on the other hand was designed to cut through that armor.

At the end of the day, the best sword is one designed to do the job you need it to do.

I think we're misunderstanding something. I thought you guys were saying the katana didn't have the thinnest edge on a blade until the scalpel.

Yeah, I know there are blades built for different purposes. For example the rapier was one of the, if not the, best blade for thrusting through gaps in armor.

Edge "thinness" is completely dependent on the blacksmiths preference not the tool. You can make any steel bladed weapon as sharp as a katana.

I find it interesting that no one has talked about the most flexible and sharpest sword in history. The Damascus could literaly bend its tip to the hilt and still be perfectly straight afterwards. It was also the sharpest blade ever made. It literaly could cut swords in two.

They also look rather stylish.
