It's a bit hard for TV series to pace their narrative arcs when they often don't know exactly how many episodes/seasons they have to work with.

That's true, but it doesn't make it any less awkward when you're watching it. I agree with Isichar - there needs to be a defined structure that they need to stick to. You can't just leave a character arc incomplete and open like they've been doing.

Maybe they thought they'd get cancelled, which is not uncommon for genre shows.

B5 had a five year plan, then they said your 4th year is the last, so they crammed in a lot of stuff in year 4. Then ratings didn't suck to they said "Here, have another year!" and they produced a mostly filler year.

Chuck also had great luck with that. Almost every year they got a 10-13 episode order and the story was structured for that. Then ratings didn't suck and the got the back 9 episodes. You could always see the story shift gears every year, which damaged the plotting and the character's relationships.

Writing's hard work.

That's not an excuse. If you assume you're going to get cancelled, plan each season independent of each other, but add in small plot threads you could use to craft another one.

They don't have a "thinking about getting cancelled" thing. No way is that happening, ABC asked for OUAT as well as several other shows to integrate an extra episode into their current seasons, so episode 8 of S4 is going to be 2 hours long.

Dunno what that particular episode is gonna be including to be twice as long as normal, but it's super sized anyway, meaning that technically this season is 23 episodes long even though it will still have 22 episodes in total.

That's one thing I like about shows that do standalone stories like American Horror Story or the British one Black Mirror (which is almost like the Twilight Zone). Since stories are self contained you can base them on their own merits a bit easier and it makes it so that the writers have to make a point and can't just string viewers along for X amount of seasons. The style of the shows let them explore different concepts and ideas without having to worry too much about one weaker season dragging the rest of the story down.

Some of my favorite moments in this show have been the mini stories independent of what's going on in the main plot like the Mad Hatter or Dr. Whales (might have spelled that wrong sorry)

If there's one thing wrong with the current season, aside from Rumple's regressing character development, it's that they seem to be trying to do too much at the same time. I worry they're juggling plot lines a bit too much.

Ok so I'm at episode 2 of season 4 and they just showed Emma from Revolution at the end as the new villian I'd suppose, how fitting she appear in the episode in which the power goes out. Any one else catch that?

Emma has so many weird love interests, and they all seem to be really boring and ill-fitted for her. It's like they just need her to have a love interest but don't know how to write chemistry so just kinda arbitrarily make them kiss or something and hope that's enough to convince the audience. Even Graham had about 10 total lines throughout his screen-time, and only half of those indicated a personality.

Yeah but they had to know from the beginning that Graham was temporary.

Omg the conclusion to that was too funny. I was laughing for 5 solid minutes straight when they did the reveal for you know who in S3 E12. Well.. I'd say that problem sort of took care of itself rather nicely XD

And yeah, the romances are a bit hard to get behind on this show. Like Ariel and her prince.. It just felt too forced and easy. I'm not necessarily against the love at first sight trope, but it does get played on a bit thick at times.

Emma and Hook I don't mind but the actors themselves just don't seem to have a good chemistry going on. Their moment just felt soooo awkward to the point of being painful between them.

At least I have Rumple and Belle..

Oh trust me, I find any romantic scenes between Emma and Hook as cringeworthy. I'm like, "alright, get on with it so we can move on"

Rumple and Belle are far easier to accept.
