I feel genuinely worried that most of the stories in Mass Effect to come, will be primary set between the first contact war and upto the Reaper invasion. I do not dislike prequel, I very much enjoyed X Men: Days of future past acting as a sequel/prequel. But with how ME3 ended, showing no possible way of a sequel. I will not really know until E3 to find out if ME4 will be a prequel or not, but I cannot help but feel concerned we're going to be stuck with prequels.

It bothers me a lot thinking that if ME4 will be a prequel then that will seal Mass Effect to no stories being set after the final Reaper invasion. I want to go as far as possible in Mass Effect's future but not so much in reverse.

I'm hoping they'll just pretend ME3 ever happened.

That could solve a lot of problems.

I guess they'll have no other choice but to do prequels. Then again, I don't really think that's much of a problem myself.

I just hope Bioware doesn't make all their stories set as prequels.

Unless ME4 actually turns out to be a prequel, it's a little premature to worry about this.

I agree with OP. While I think Bioware can really develop the story and take interesting avenues for new storylines in a prequel, I feel that they can really push the imaginative limits and be incredibly creative if they go the sequel route. I'm hoping for the latter, but I'm doubtful.

I'm hoping, for your sake, that you'll get over ME3 some day.

If the next Mass Effect game is a prequel, yes, that will likely mean the series will be confined to prequels.

Thankfully, I seriously doubt that's going to happen.

Oh, I'm sorry.  I forgot there's a statute of limitations on disappointment.

Let me revise:

OMG ME3 was soooooo awesome!  I can't wait for the next game to see how they follow up on it!!  Sequel, prequel, I don't care what they do next, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!

:D  :D :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Better?

If it is good, I will buy. I will give Bioware another chance. As much as I don't like Mass Effect 3 for many reasons, I will give Bioware another chance.

There will be prequels at some point after a trilogy. Mass might go down the halo road after halo 3 we got wars reach odst then halo4. But if it is a prequel just let me play shep or a alliance soldier. If it is a sequel it will proberly be 5000 years down the line.

Hope not but fear so. There might be a good reason to do prequels in the future but before then Mass Effect needs to move forward, so that there seems to be a future.

And even if it does, whether further games are prequels will depend on the sales of MENext (if further games are made). If MENext is a prequel and sells well, then it's not actually a large problem after all.

Although it's very difficult to do a sequel to ME series I still think it's possible.

How did Mass Effect 3 end with no possibility of a sequel?

With the next game still being completely unannounced which could mean 2+ years til the next one.  It's likely that the game won't be out for 360 or PS3 consoles, which again would likely mean there won't be an import.

So we'll be getting a canon ending to Mass Effect 3 to be used in Mass Effect 4.  As long as it's destroy, I'll accept a canon ending,

Or they make a reboot, or a sequel set 100k years in the future when everybody will be green zombies...

It's going to be a reboot:

Game opens with TIM, Miranda, Wilson and a few others standing around shep's hospital bed on the Lazarus station. TIM is watching the monitors intently, silent as they flatline.

Wilson: I'm sorry, Commander Shepard is dead.

Miranda: His brain activity was off the charts these past few months. I don't understand it.

TIM *pulls out a datapad, begins entering names for firing squad detail* : It's alright, Wilson. I'm sure you did the best you could.... okay, what's plan B?

Wilson *knows that tone of voice, is eager to please* : W-well... Kai Leng is responding well to the implant treatments.

Miranda *scoffs*

TIM : Be serious, Wilson... or I'll have to shoot you.

Wilson *pales*: Y-yes sir.*

TIM: Relax Wilson, I'm kidding.

Wilson *sighs in relief*

TIM *puts Wilson's name at top of list* Miranda, where's our young miss Brooks?

Miranda: Who?

Maya Brooks *steps forward* : It's Miss Lilium, sir. Hope Lilium?

TIM *looks at Miranda questioningly*

Miranda *nods*

TIM: Okay then. Miss...uh... Lilium. How's the clone coming along?

Brooks: Fine, sir. Everything looks good.

TIM: And the control chip?

Brooks *checks pocket* : Implanted and running smoothly.

TIM: Super. You're in charge of this one, miss Lilium.

Brooks: Yes, sir.

TIM: Miri, want to take my new ship for a spin? Lilium -- I mean, Ilium is nice this time of year.

Miranda: Let's go.

TIM: Wilson, turn out the lights when you leave.

Wilson *mutters* : Kai Leng was a good plan.

Well, maybe you should do something with you because right now it looks that your blind hate clouded your mind and eyes and you are responding to completely different post.

"Deal with it" post from Psychevore is 5 posts and one huge picture lower. Comrade Wakizashi just spoke about his personal opinion on prequel.

Well, except for those of us who don't care for prequels. But if prequels sell, there aren't enough of us to count.

Yeah, I meant not a large problem from BW's point of view. I would not want a prequel.

I had a lot of value for Mass Effect, but overall, ME3 took away some of that value away (and it wasn't just the endings that did that). The time between when Humans first meet the Turians up to the Reaper invasion feels too much a small time period to be making stories in a big galaxy. Life is confirmed to continue to after ME3 so I want to see that. Prequels would also feel like an reason not to deal with ME3 ending.
