Rule of Cool is responsible for a lot of missteps across the entire trilogy.

Cerberus overhaul takes my #1 spot.

I never found the Thorian too bad, and the Cipher I found to be a roughly handled plot device due to the short explanation of the theory behind it. To me the Cipher just seemed like some way to retroactively justify Shepard visiting Feros.

It's shape didn't bother me too much. What really bothered me was the concept that Reapers were made out of organic parts. I think they should have dropped any connection about the Reapers being made up of organic slushy or minds or whatever, and kept them purely as AI creatures (although that gets rid of most of ME2's main plot).

Yeah, I'm still bamboozled by the idea of absorbing organic energy, like some kind of mecha-Cthulhu sponge.

How about across Bio's entire history? Not that Bio's even a particular offender.

considering that it was quite bad, if not nonexistent....I'd say that'd be a good thing.

Easily the biggest detriment to the overarching narrative of the trilogy imo.

Special, or lucky?

It was the Protheans that gave them the chance, after all

Yeah, I'd say it's more luck. This was the cycle where monkey-wrenches from previous cycles, such as the protheans severing the connection between the Reapers and the Citadel Keepers and the various cycles' successive additions to the Crucible, had piled up just high enough for the Crucible to be finished before the Reapers could wipe out all the spacefaring species. While the games always hype up Shepard's qualities as an exceptional leader, (s)he still probably couldn't have pulled this off in a less advantageous set of circumstances.

Its all true, but someone else could still have massively failed given the exact same circumstances as shepard.

Why does everyone think its going to be a prequel? The next mass effect could start years after ME3 or they could do a whole new entire Space Sci-fi. You never know bioware may surprise us.

I don't think everyone thinks it will be a prequel, but considering how the trilogy ended, provided BioWare has some concern for continuity (heh), it's not hard to see why some come to the conclusion that a prequel is the only sensible option. A whole new space scifi would just be a new IP, which, admittedly, is what I'd prefer.

That's what I wish as well, unless the new game happens very far into the future or before anything involving Cerberus remotely existed. To me the universe is too damaged otherwise. It still feels as if ME4 is a cash grab at this point.

To make a sequel they'd have to make one of the endings canon, and I highly doubt that they will do that. I may be wrong, of course, but still.
If they did such a thing, I would prefer the canon ending to be the destroy ending. Control I might find entertaining if they handled it the right way, and with refusal they might as well make a new ip, though the idea of playing through a cycle with access to Liaras time capsules does sound really interesting to me. I also feel that synthesis has the weakest basis for a sequel, but that's just me.

I wouldn't mind a prequel, but I don't know if the FCW would be that interesting to me. Personally I don't think any story in the MEVerse not pertaining to the Reapers would feel...significant enough, but maybe it would be fun.

The first contact war would be boring. Frankly, I'd rather not deal with another wartime setting at all. One-upping the reaper threat would be a humongous mistake, because that makes the whole shooter mechanic seem even more ridiculous.

Oh I'm not saying that they should try to go bigger than the Reapers, only that once you save the galaxy then playing through what is essentially a single battle in a small scale "war" wouldn't have the same impact.
Of course I don't expect the next mass effect game to be nearly as good as the trilogy (and before anyone says anything I do mean all three games, ME3 ending non-withstanding) but it still might be a little fun.

I also can't see it coming out without some sort of multiplayer mode, for better or for worse.

I expect there to be some form of multiplayer, but I trust that it won't be a requirement to access any particular content in single player this time.

NOOOOOOO PREQUEL!!! NO!

Atleast not as the next major installment. As a book, movie, or some facebook/browser game or smart phone app... fine. But not as the next title.

If it's hyperbole, it's not far off.  Remember, we're not working with just two life cycles here.  They've been successful for millions of years.

Quite a bit far off...

Lets say they've been at it for 2,2 billion years. Building a new reaper every 50.000 years (not every circle and maybe more than one in others). Thats only 44.000 reapers or smaller cuttlefish.

Enough to pretty much deny any hope for a victory through conventional weaponry, but far from enough to "darken the sky of every world"... There's an estimated 50 billion planets in our galaxy.

But threatening aeronautical display on every planet they wanted to reap? Sure...

Personally I prefer the future setting, get rid of the silly reapers and find me some saucy future interspecies intrigue... where anything can happen.
