If I have to dress my character in some Orlesian fashion even ONCE I am going to go ballistic.

If she is to go into battle wouldn't is make since to cut her hair to a less reachable length.

Lol it's the complete opposite with me, if I can't wear Orlesian styled robes or suits all the time I'll probably do the same thing

I am not a fan of the new picture. But it's concept art and we don't know exactly when it was created so I am inclined to wait and see.
The cover art of TME is so perfect, I don't know why they would stray too far from it. Even Patrick Weekes said in the acknowledgements that the artist brought Celene to life (which I wholeheartedly agree with).

Don't get me wrong, I won't mind it being an aspect of the game, I just hope that unless my character has to play "the Game" at some ball or some such thing I hope the game doesn't force me to dress in that fashion for an extended period of time.
My personal preferences for character types are always the ones (with the exception of Kenpachi in Bleach) where practicality of what they wear and the way they fight is at the forefront. Hell, I imagine at least one of my Inquisitor run-throughs will be a mix of the two characters that are quoted in my sig.

It's still a concept art, she can look different in the main game

They could be trying to show how the Civil War, plus the mages, plus the demonic invasion, plus the loss of Briala is taking a toll on the Empress's health.
Honestly, can't blame her.

She had been involved in a number of battles during The Masked Empire, and I don't recall her hair ever really being an issue (though I may need to reread some passages as that could be a detail I glossed over).

Mm, that's what I had been thinking as well. That said I'd still be a bit surprised because even after all was said and done at the end of ME she was remarkably calm. I mean, she was stated to have an extraordinary lack of sleep and rest (presumably since she took the throne twenty years ago), and she managed with the Grand Game (which most of Orlais - minus the peasants - is still apparently rather concerned with over looming threats..) without even seeming guilty over many of the horrible things she did (probably because she felt justified, I suppose).
If that is the reason I'll definitely understand though. Everyone has a breaking point at some length after all.

Definitely. She's very striking. And when I compare her to David Bowie, it's a compliment.
And I happen to hate Orlesians. That should say something.

I guess her hair could be scraped back in a tight ponytail that we can't see from this angle..
maybe
if you squinted through some smoke on a moonless night

The top image is definitely Celene, IMO, she looks pretty identical to the image below it, except for the short hair of course. Also I am pretty sure in the top image her outfit and mask are from the Masked Empire, I remember reading something about a blue dress with gold, and a gold mask decorated with sapphire.
Nah its Purple and gold with amethysts, the colors of her house (Valmont) theres mention of moonstones but no sapphires and no blue.
Anyway I don't like the new picture & hope she doesn't look like that in game, she looks like she has aged at least 30 years in it.

I don't really like how she looks in that concept art thingy. Her TME look is far better, IMO.

Aside from the sickly skin color she seems to be designed to look as androgynous as possible. Personally, I can't say I care for it.

I like the new art for Celene. The hair length does make her look like Wyne, but I really the more practical look. With the loss of her champion, spy master, and her enchantments she would have to change her look to fit her increased combat training. I just hope that with Sandal in Celene's service she has gotten at least one of her lost aces back.

The images of Celene kind of remind me how some female rulers of the past were called beautiful just because they were Queen....and you can't go around calling the queen ugly.
Makes me wonder i that's kind of what they're going for.

I haven't read the books, so I can't say whether or not the portrayal of her in the art deviates from her description. But so long as it doesn't retcon a previous physical description, I wouldn't mind it if Celene was not attractive. After all we've already had one beautiful queen with Anora. Not every monarch should be attractive.

Here's my opinion on Celene; she makes me a better offer than Gaspard in terms of aid in shutting down the breaches, she gets to keep her empire.

I think it makes it more interesting for her not to be attractive because I think most would assumes she would be.

The picture seems quite stylised.
Though it makes her seem quite austere. Well, compared to how I'd expect an Orlesian empress to look.
