This thread has inspired me to change my Shepard's first name to "Commander".

Commander Commander Shepard. So good at his job, you need to say it twice.

You can have the rank of Commander and the title of Captain, in the US at least.

Private First class Shepard, reporting for duty, sir!

wait...would that be serviceman first class or...?

I think in the tali trailer the quarian calls him 'captain shepard", but I've heard a few people call him commander in the gameplay vids so....
It sounds good either way to me.

Private First class, pretty sure - marine ranks, not navy ranks.  I think that's the right one, anyways.

Private first class is a non commisoned rank, the equivilant real world rank for Ensign in Army or Marines is LT Second class

Yes, I know it's a non-commisioned rank.  I'm trying to recall the Alliance marine rank structure outlined in the codex in ME1.

Well in Navy tradition whoever commands the ship is either the Commander or Captain regardless or rank, if the Lt is the highest ranked officer he is Commander.

At the same time Shepard is a Lt Commander, so calling him Commander is proper too.

your close even a LT would be called captain and yes i took this from the wikipedia

Captain is the traditional customary title for and form of address given to the person in charge of a vessel
at sea regardless of military rank. On most legal documents in the
merchant shipping industry, he or she is correctly referred to as the
ship's Master. A nautical "Captain" may be a civilian or a naval commissioned officer of any rank. See Master Mariner or skipper (boating).

This usage originated in the Royal Navy
in the 1300s. At that time, "Captain" referred to the commander of the
contingent of soldiers boarded upon a ship. However, the actual sailing
and maintenance of the ship was in the hands of the "Master" and (what
became) the other warrant officers--using the same terminology as that
used on a merchant ship of the period.

I think they should have made it so that in personal conversations if you decide to use the default John, then you would be referred to as John and if you chose a name then you are just referred to as Commander

Well I am ad libed a bit on the whole they would be called a Commander part, I knew they would be called Captain but there are times a person can be called Commander and not have the rank too, was just generalizing.

In the same way that katanas are just better, 'Commander' will always sound cooler than 'Captain', and thus Shepard's title is unlikely to ever change.

Well as some of you have said "Commander sounds better" and that may be true. However after saving the entire galaxy from extinction I feel he is intitled to a promotion......don't you? I mean if you can't get a promotion after that then what the hec does it take? :)

it even gets wierder if say commander sheppard and captain anderson were both on board the normandy sheppard would be called captain and anderson would just be called anderson so not to confuse the crew and the 2 captains when orders are given. or if anderson had another title say counselman anderson if you did that ending he would be called by that.

That may be true if you didnt put Anderson forward to join the council, cuz if you did, then he is Counsellor Anderson in ME2

Last time I heard, Shepard was technically still a Lieutenant Commander. It's in the ME1 codex.
We only call him Commander because it's the conventional title we use for anyone holding the rank of Commander or Lt Commander. Same goes for Lt (1st and 2nd) and admirals (rear, vice and fleet).

from what I understand, wether Anderson is a counicilor or not, he was promoted to Admiral.
