Maybe it's because I play mage Hawke 99% of the time (and when I don't Beth's dead). Just noticed he had a warrior Hawke, Anders and Bethany.
Why is Bethany always dead in you're playthroughs? D: She is so innocent and adorable!

Plus, Carver's death seems a bit more epic with the whole "Soulless bastards!" before charging the ogre ![]()

Because she's as interesting as watching paint dry and better served to have my PC end up as alone as his LI for the dramaz and angst ![]()

Then you have never tried to watch paint dry! It can be really relaxing! ![]()
But in all seriousnes, I do agree that she can be quite boring. But I still liked her well enough ![]()

I can somewhat stand her as a warden since she gets some claws but even then bleh. I much prefer Carver.
Snarky Hawke + Carver = ![]()
At least when watching paint dry you can get high off the fumes. Just saying.
For my warrior Hawke, Bethany dies in the deep roads. Dat Angstz. But then, he had a hard life.

I have enough companions whining at me as it is, thank you very much. Bethany makes for an nice break to all this people if you ask me.
Isabela and Varric don't really whine either, but Anders/Justice really puts his mind to it so he can cover everyone's tab at the whine bar.

I like Carver's whining though :3 reminds me of my siblings. Where's Bethany's gives me cavities. Thankfully you get Carver with mage so ![]()

So sad but so true.
To me, Bethany was the most bland companion in the entire game. Even though I tried all outcomes, to me she is just a "Yes, ma'am" filler, not a full-fleshed character. And she almost always dies in the Deep Roads, opposite to Carver, who is very amusing in his "little brother's revolt".

Sleeping with Anders.
Bethany's a mage, so I like having her in my Party over Carver.
Besides a few things that others have mentioned (selling Fenris to Danarius, giving Feynriel to Torpor) ...
During Loose Ends, Hawke can take the goods from the little boy Pryce and callously tossing him a coin as you leave.
Allowing Kelder Vanard to go free and taking his father's money.
Using Tarohne's books to gain power during Forbidden Knowledge.
During Fool's Gold, saving the greedy brother Iwan over his more good-natured brother Merin.
Regarding Pyrce and Kelder you're basically in the position of saving your own skin. Betraying Athenril or the magistrate makes you a target. Also, you would no longer get such jobs if you start doing the "noble" thing by giving criminal children Athenril's goods or playing judge/jury/executioner on a magistrate's son. Morally you're under no obligation to play Robin Hood with Pyrce or take the law into your own hands with Kelder; no more so than any of the guards who arrest Kelder instead of killing him. I can see an argument made for doing such but I wouldn't call the above actions truly "evil." Throwing a coin at Pyrce is cold if not a little funny though.
Tarohne is a case of looking the other way for power. We don't really know if all blood magic is cut-and-dry evil and therefore all knowledge should be destroyed. Still, making a deal with a demon (even in such a small measure) isn't likely on the good path.
I never got Fool's Gold because of my background.

This reminds me of the Bethany and Carver thread now.
I will say Carver is more interesting but far less likable. Bethany is very agreeable and that arguably makes her bland. However, I felt a kinship between Hawke and her and felt truly bad to lose her after act 1 to the Grey Wardens. I couldn't wait to get rid of Carver. You could feel the guilt Bethany lives with knowing her family sacrificed much for her sake. She's a submissive person and would never have stayed free of the templars without them.

For me Carver normally dies and Bethany lives. I just can't kill off Bethany. The Deep Roads death scene sucks largely because it comes out of left field and just feels like a character write-off but I still use it for Carver just to be rid of his whining pop-ups later on.

Bethany's so called "boring" personality is a welcome sight by Act 3 (if not sooner). Considering how difficult most of the other companions can be.
I can't think of anyone better to run away from Kirkwall with. That whole place brought nothing but pain.

I agree. Combative or erratic characters can keep things interesting, but it's nice to have a familiar character who is more welcoming and goes on for more than a moment without making the PC dance on eggshells or have some kind of demand.

But the Wardens suck! It's all ghoulish endings and damned to live and die with darkspawn.

True I'm just saying she's just as snippy and aggro on Hawke as everyone else then.
Carver at least lightens up. (Though he gets 3x worse as a templar so balancing act I guess).
Can Templar Carver even be killed? I certainly will if he can. If not, that sucks.
D: why would you personally kill your sibling? That's terrible.
Even my most staunch pro templar Hawke would shove his sword in Meredith's stomach himself before letting her kill Bethany. Too many years of protecting to turn on them.
But no templar Carver can't be killed. He turns on Meredith before she attacks Hawke (one of my fav carver moments.)
Edit: Wait you don't mean having Hawke kill him do you? If you mean him dying in general no he only can die in the DR if he survives lothering.
I'd sooner kill every Templar in Thedas before I'd let anyone kill Bethany, but Carver's auto-rivalry does make betrayal and a fight to the death seem more natural ![]()

I disagree about Carver though. A fight to the death would be...odd. Especially seeing as all that time in the templars and he doesn't snitch on Hawke? Carver may ****** and moan but he'd probably defend his family to the death. (and so will my Hawke
) Fight to the death would've felt as out of place to me as letting Meredith kill Bethany.
