"Playing" practically implies challenge. To play means to achieve something: Maybe it's climbing the highest mountain in Skyrim, finding the best hideout in hide-and-seek or trying out a new toy with your doggie.

Playing with people just adds a new challenge and that is competition. As long as it's fair it's all fun and games.

Of course there's the occasional people that are hell bent on winning and prone to rage when they lose. But that's not normal - at least it shouldn't be.

Competing is our very nature, it's completely OK to look how you do compared to others. And it's good that we have games for that. If it was all serious we'd have a lot of severed limbs lying around.
