If they really wanted to give us more Shepard, wouldn't it be easier to just set the game after Destroy rather than futz around with a clone?

Heh, pretty much. Besides, since many players may not even own the Citadel DLC, it would have even less of a point.

The clone had none of his memories and personality and was a bit of an *******, and was by no measure commander shepard, so... might as well be a new character...

I'm sure some bored soul will use the character creator in mass effect 4 or whatever its called to make someone resembling sheploo (or their custom shep), and then that can be your clone.

Who cares? Instead of continuing the series playing as Shepard's clone you might as well play random Alliance grunt 201723 since neither of them are Shepard, and both exist in a universe shaped by Shepard's choices.

You do realize that brothers are not the same entity, right? You know that if one brother dies the other can't just take over his job, his memories, etc, right?

Garrus, Tali, the Virmire fatality, most of the ME2 cast ... they could all feasibly be dead in ME3. Tough to reference them.

They can reference events, though, without listing names.

It wouldn't be hard to reference them if Bioware uses a default ME3 playthrough. It just wouldn't have any reference at all to the ME2 cast

I wouldn't really want to play as some moustache-twirling fake Shepard. If I wanted to play as Shepard again (I don't particularly) I'd at least want it to be the real thing. Anyway, the clone is canonised as a Humanity first, even-Cerberus-aren't-quite-racist-enough-for-me, Dick Dastardly type, I don't see how you could play as them.

It'd be easier to just assume that all of them are dead while writing the new story, methinks.

Not mentioning them =/= they died.

I'm just hoping they'll handwave the Mass Effect trilogy away by showing Sandal gazing at a Citadel snow globe...

I agree. That's what I believe will happen. I wouldn't be surprised if there is no reference made about the characters or the trilogy in the next game

wouldn't surprise me if next game is about an undiscovered alien race new to the galaxy. I can understand the new dev's wanting as much distance as possible from the trilogy.

to many variables to make a sensible storyline.

note: back in March 2012 I wanted to believe the Shepard we played in ME2 and ME3 was a clone of the real (dead) Shepard. But that would mean serious retconning and I don't believe BW will ever retcon anything in the trilogy at this point.

How so? What difference does it make whether you magically restored a pile of ashes to life or just made a clone with memories magically extracted from the ash of Shepard's brain?

What, fundamentally, is the difference between the original and a clone considering that all your cells are periodically replaced all the time?

I dunno.  The comics seem to be taking place in some alternate universe, at the very least...

Why does the game just have to be a future in the same universe? Imagine if the quarians just took off in their spaceships and kept going. How would the reapers find them at all? This kinda' ties in with my problem with the first game's plot. The logistics of taking out a spacefaring race. How can the reapers be sure they got everyone? The protheans somehow hid an entire planet from them and Javiik's hide away was found but they were too lazy to double check and he survived.

So what if a group got together before the war and decided they wanted to map out areas that aren't connect to mass relays yet? This group builds a massive space station and then the war breaks out. Alien races of all kinds want to escape so they join up with this group which takes off in the giant fleet to parts unknow. Maybe some quarians want to join them and since Shepard saved the geth, they have an A.I. in their suit. There are some krogains aboard too, seeing as how Shepard cured them they can repopulate in this new galaxy. Or maybe they all died.

Since they got the hell out of dodge before starchild, they don't have green eyes, don't have to worry about Shepard's reapers, and the geth can be alive with the reapers being dead as well

Who says there's any part of the galaxy that isn't connected by relay? There are places the Citadel races hadn't opened a relay path to, but that's not at all the same thing.

Clones? Horses? Suddenly all the bludgeoned horses lying around the BSN that all look the same makes a whole lot of sense.

to many variables to make a sensible storyline.

Individual character choices are easy to move away from, but some of the choices in ME3, esp the endings, really give no room to escape. Like Synthesis variable changing how entire life in the galaxy looks like, including undiscovered races/planets. Either they will somehow incorporate the biggest long-term choices, or decide on canon set of choices, or bring everything into the same future (Synthesis 'worn out', Geth rebuilt, Krogan recloned etc). Or maybe they will pull something like Star Trek reboot with parrarel universe
