They are relationships formed in a high stress enviroment where everyone thinks they will dead before long anyway. Fire Emblem insists you get married before procreating , those whacky Japanese :D

Maybe the need something like Star Ocean where you can assign crewmates rooms and as the trust levels grow you can mix and match the genders.

You don't have to sleep with Alistair, though.  He can ask for it once his approval reaches "love", but the Warden is free to turn him down (for -10 disapproval, ouch) and wait until later.

The -10 Approval really irks me. "Oh, you want to wait? Well, I don't like you as much now."

There is always DA4, or a DLC if we push hard enough!

well, if Hawke can't form her/his own family in almost a decade (but, well, end up loosing what little family she/he still have) where for the mayority of time life is calm, and boring, and nothing happen, I didn't had much hope for DAI, where the world is really at risk.

But I would have liked the chance to have a family or a marriage for an elf/dwarf character, since only HN can marry without mods in DAO this time. (and maybe dwarf noble is already married? can't remember)

Dwarf Noble can have a kid by sleeping with a Noble Hunter, but they only have a one night stand.

Have you never turned down someone in real life? I turned someone down because she was drunk and she did not take it well. Minus 10 friendship seems trivial.

Nobody has ever asked me on a date let alone sleeping with them, so no.

And just as many people can respect that decision than not like it, so the universal - approval gets aggravating.

Feelings are irrational so you rarely get a rational response. Alistair was up for it and got shot down, no man likes that.

Alistair wants to wait too, but it's all about when he's ready, not the Warden.  That's kind of annoying.

Yeah, the Warden can respect when Alistair wants to wait, it'd be nice for him to return the courtesy.

This actually happens to me. Surprisingly, I denied sleeping with two different women cause I prefer taking my time. Both still my friends, one I had almost married. Regardless, I did get a disapproval rating from them both. I guess I dont let my hormones get in the way of sense. Already learned it the hard way once. Honestly, marriage would be nice then the fun instead of premarital.

Yeah - the romance mini game resulting in victory as a sex scene has probably run its course.

Also having a romance option as someone who isn't gallivanting across the country side fighting next to you could add a bit more depth to player motivation when it comes to choices.

Well IRL, when people get shot down, even in a polite manner (though it often isn't polite at all  :P ) it tends to hurt their feelings. If they say otherwise (like Isabella in DA2 iirc) they're lying. Not everyone shows their displeasure, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. It can make people feel insecure, About their looks, their personality, and it really can knock a persons confidence. Projecting that onto the person who turned them down is a regular defence mechanism.

I don't think it's a bad thing that Alistair gets a little bit peeved when you turn him down. I also wasn't phased (and was surprised at so many people complaining about) when you get rivalry points for shooting down Anders advances in DA2, for the same reasons.

The sex with Alistair disapproval might hold sway with kids who haven't had a serious relationship (which kind of works with Alistair) - however for two adults in a relationship the -10 felt way out of place.

With Anders the problem wasn't the rejection points - the problem was the only way to avoid a relationship was basically to have Hawke go "Ewww. Gross." which was really dumb.

An option like - "Anders, you're a bit of a stud for sure. Unfortunately my inclinations lean towards ******. Sorry Bro." would have been much better.

It's not the only way, though. Two outta three you just miss his advances altogether. If you don't promise him you're willing to listen to whatever he has to say, that is.

So you've got to be a jerk before, or you've got to be a jerk after.

Of all the character relationships - the way Anders was handled was by far the worst.

I wouldn't go that far. You not liking the situation he's got into doesn't make you a jerk. You giving false promises (if not downright flirting), well. You know.

I laughed, it was so terribly done. Just the same problem I have with the romance plots.

Just like Morrigan would.
