As a former NWN persistent world admin who has long since given up on trying to host, knowing that the recent news of gamespy and such were a sad inevitability in a world where big companies want to monetize, monetize, monetize, I was ECSTATIC to discover "shards online," a game that, really, at its core, fuses UO-like (heavily flexible and moddable) gameplay with NWN-like world building tools. There's a lot to read there, and there's no point in my trying to sum it all up, but the long and the short of it is that they GET that a big company will never "do this" again, and so they, a smaller company, are trying to make it happen.
