Hair loss in DA:I ?

Hey everyone,

I apologize if this sounds weird but I haven't followed the development of DA:I and

when seeing the media that has been released so far I can't help but wonder:

Why do so many characters have short or no hair at all ?

I really liked the concept art of Sera for example, she looked chaotic and fun.

Now that I saw what appears to be the ingame model of her,

she comes across very serious and militaristic due to her "Navy Seal" haircut.

Don't get me wrong, I think that for Cassandra for example short hair is very fitting.

She is less about looks and more about being practical in combat.

Does the hair thing have to do with clipping problems when it comes to equipment ?

Was there any official response from Bioware's side so far ?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. ^_^/)

Hair is a very difficult thing to make in video games, often it leads to clipping or just plain looking really weird in general because longer hair have different physics. There are also stories of game companies actually hireing another company to just do hair (I think it was the Alice Madness Returns game?) because they wanted the hair a certain way, comparatively there is the Tombraider game recently released where it actually takes a stupidly powerful graphics card and processor to do the new physics hair (which is optional but was totally created to show off the tech either way)

So, having a character have short hair makes it easier to avoid weird issues or having to designate a team to just hair physics. In a massive rpg where there are lots of characters, all having to program such complicated hair would be such a drain on things that could be more importantly worked on.

We've only just gotten to the level of tech where clothing moves in a very flowy way, having hair react constently to head movements could end up making it look really other worldly (IE the Alice Madness Returns hair always blowing around into her face like it was made of spiders webbing rather then actual hair to me, but worked in the strange world) generally in a bad way.

This is also a dark fantasy game, you can justify the short hair in a number of ways. Such as-

-Long hair is easy to grab in a fight.

-Long hair takes more treatment

-Long hair is contently in the way and getting caught on things

-Long hair and helmets are the worse thing ever

And as a person with stupidly long hair, I can't see a warrior with long locks without going "That must be so heavy when wet..." or wondering how when a person even just brushes their hand through it, it isn't getting tangled in about twenty spots even if you've combed it recently.

But generally I just don't think the tech is there to make it look properly. So the designers have to keep that in mind unless they're perfectly fine with clipping everywhere like what most JRPGs do when their characters hairs reach their feet (different mood and different worlds between comparing the two genres I know but it still gives a sense to what sort of character designs each side goes for. Style over Logic or whatever word would go there)

Thank you for replying. :)

From a technical standpoint it makes perfect sense.
I just found the shift from the concept art to the ingame models a bit strange, so I wanted to ask.

Of course this is just a minor detail and won't have much impact for me.

Part of my confusion was that I was expecting the most bizarre hairstyles in Orlais,

because I always thought of it as a DA equivalent of Paris, the home of fashion and architecture.

Solas also had hair in concept art, maybe the Breach causes hair loss lol.

I assume they didn't want the long hair to disappear or clip when wearing headgear.

Long hair is a really terrible idea for someone who's going to see a lot of combat

It personally bugs me a lot. I know it's technically difficult, but I'd rather have the option of medium/long hair that doesn't look that good rather than have everyone be either bald or really short haired. It looks odd when you see so many characters together that all have the same type of haircuts. I like short haircuts, but variety is better.

I'm not talking about long hair that looks ridiculous to have if you're fighting, but lengths of hair we've seen in DAO and DA2 work just fine. Plus there are obviously going to be NPCs that are not fighters/don't plan to fight (like Celene who is the empress, and only fights when she has to, like in the book. And up until the latest concept art she had long hair, so her suddenly having short hair stands out even more.). It just doesn't make much sense to have everyone with short hair suddenly in the third game.

I haven't seen a dev reply to these claims directly so far. Hopefully we will be proven wrong and see lots of characters in the game with different lengths of longer hair in the future.

Small note from someone who has extremely long hair: I find it easier to take care of than short hair, and better in both cold (built-in blanket!) and warm (a bun gets it off my neck better than anything other than a buzzcut ever will, and it's less maintenance) weather.

I wouldn't mind if the long hair disappeared under helmets, since that's reasonably realistic that you'd put your hair up during a fight. If you've got the 'invisible helmet' toggle on, or just aren't wearing one, well, you're not too fussed about the realism of the situation then, are you?

Clipping isn't that much of an issue, but that might just be me since I recall long hair in the Sims (first one) stabbing straight through furniture and the HOUSE. After that you're prepared for anything.

I realize we users don't mind clipping that much, for the sake of getting things we want. But in the eyes of industry professionals, it's considered extremely sloppy and amateur. I recall tumblr members getting all up in arms about Elsa's hair (Frozen) when it went through her arm in her musical sequence. And when I took a class in 3-d animation, the teacher would really get on our case if our videos had clipping. All in all, it's just something basic you want to avoid as best as possible.

So, I'm assuming this is the solution to the problem: make all the hair short. At this point I believe Varric has the longest hair as it meets his shoulders. Taking that into consideration, I can only assume we'll have the option to at least have hair reaching the shoulders in the character creation. (Or a long braid, who knows, the Dwarven model had it, which astounded me.)

Edit: As for the loss of hair for characters that already had short hair (ex. Solas) I don't really know... seems someone down the pipeline has always shot down that hairstyle concept anyway.

Bioware is attempting to promote a degenerate bald lifestyle. Baldness is a sin in the eyes of the Maker, for the glare reflecting off of their chrome domes blinds his eyes.

I legit thought this would be a thread asking for our characters to go bald if enough time passed.

The Inquisitor only takes short-haired people as members.

All companions have to go through this initiation where the Inquisitor shaves their heads.

Hair is a very difficult thing to make in video games *snip*

Just look at the new Tomb Raider. One of their main selling points (graphics wise) was the hair tessellation. It was brand new and quite impressive. But hopefully the DA team will realize that adding tech that makes it so hard to do hair right is actually bad, because we don't want 5 bald companions. I'd vote for less impressive hair tech if we got companions with long hair.

I don't see why they can't just give Sera a ponytail or something. I mean, I'm pretty alright with the way she looks, because the short hair thing reminds me of a pixie or tinkerbell, which I guess would makes sense for her character if she ends up being as cute and quirky as everyone is hoping

You know, I thought this thread was gonna be about the idea of the characters losing hair over time as time progresses through the game's story, or something along those lines.

The thing about Elsa's hair is that it was a fully-scripted movie. By Disney, who like to act like THE company for animation. It wasn't just the clipping, it was the fact it's a movie by that specific company. It's a lot more forgivable in a videogame, and I think users have made it clear they'd rather have clippy hair than none. Plus, practice makes perfect and all that.

I actually really love Sera's short hair. I probably would've kept my not caring attitude towards her if she had the long hair. As for Solas... I cant remember/find any concept with him having hair...

There is concept art of the war room with all the companions arguing and the inquisitor stabbing the table. Solas is the male elf there, but he has black hair (shaved to the sides) and is smirking. It was shown a while ago.

I just hope the hair has some movement this time.

Wood hair is so 2000s.
