I like Garrus but i think he's overrated. When i ask why peope like him, they say sticks by shepherd but then again all have their reasons to not help you. Ashley dosent trust you since you died and came back as well as having the alliance run through her family. Kaidan is just skeptical. Liara is a shadow broker and needs to tie up loose ends. Wrex has to control clan Urdnot. Garrus is a yes man and unlike tali does not question your judgement. He says he is not a good turian as he questions orders but this is not the case with shepherd. The only he has the slightest conflict with shepherd is his loyalty mission. I think over the games he becomes a bit too simple a character. Thoughts?

Firstly: why were the previous versions of this topic locked?
Secondly: I love garrus mainly down to his snarky attitude and general badassary. Also, hey, he does stick by you and I kind of head cannoned him as my shepherd's protege. As for whether hes over rated? I'm not sure, he certainly is one of the most loved companions in ME.
Edit: oh yeah and that voice. Perfect for him.

I like him because he's funny, cool and can kill things from five hundred feet away and then snark about it.

Plus that voice. Rawr!

He's 1 of 2 romance options for femshep. ...

But also, he is present in all 3 games. His commentary is fun to listen to. He does have Shepards back. He's awkward and cute to romance. He's taller than femshep. Turians vo is sexy sounding. I don't see him as a sellout or soft because he truly cares about the same things Shepard does. Even if I don't let him kill Sidonis, he's still loyal. That's worth something to me.

If I don't romance him and try to help him get a date... that whole scene is hilarious! I truly love Garrus.

Note: He does die a lot in missions. AI wants to stand in front of mobs and shoot instead from an effective sniper position. For this reason I don't choose to bring him that often.

I like Garrus. He's got some great banter and dialogue, especially in ME2 and ME3. But I do think he's somewhat overrated. In ME3, his character literally goes nowhere, and his entire arc about struggling with the notions of justice versus the law is thrown out the window. In addition, his growth as a leader gets a rather absurd and disappointing conclusion with him becoming Palaven's "top advisor" where he outranks generals for some daft reason.

I did not even like him until ME3.

Tolerated him in ME1, thought he was an amusing analog of a comic-book vigilante in ME2, but, yeah, I actually liked him in the third.

The "ruthless calculus" dialogue bits stick out.

I think ME1 is when I liked Garrus the most. In ME2 and ME3 he started teetering on the edge of Gary Stu territory.

I'm not a fan of Garrus.

I rarely recruit him in ME1

In the majority of my ME2 playthroughs he's killed during the suicide mission.

In ME3 he's useless and if I need a sniper, I use Ashley when she gets back on the ship. I also hate the no Shepard without Vakarian line.

I do admit he's a little overrated but I like him as a character. He's grew on me, after I played ME2. He's actually got better in ME3 and a lot better in that department and grew in too a good character to me.

I don't believe him to be overrated since I think he's one of the characters whose development is stronger than most. I can think of squadmates that I personally consider much simpler than Garrus, like Kaidan and Ashley.

I also don't quite get why people complain about him being so supportive to Shepard, as a thing to hold against him. I don't get why this comes as something abnormal or unlikable? Because it's not like he doesn't voice his own opinions/feedback. I can think of many friends in my life who despite key disagreements, offer unwavering support and withhold judgement, not as an indication of weakness in their character or will, but their relationship to me and vice versa. If I saw a stranger kick a kitten, I'd kick their ***. If I saw my best friend do it, I'd restrain myself from even just verbally assaulting her. I'd just talk to her  because my trust runs deep and I know she wouldn't do it without a good reason. If you judge me for this, I'd think it's not because I have am fundamentally flawed or weak in character, but the way I am and how it doesn't appeal to you.

When it comes to squad mates I feel like it has alot to do with just personal taste, just like how people choose their friends. For instance loots of people are mad about Miranda, but I can care less because even though she's cool/strong/sexy/capable/etc she's someone I just wouldn't care to be close to cause her personality does not appeal to me. I would not hold that against her as a character though, it's just me.

Great character that really shines in ME2. In ME3, he's kinda like that best friend you have had for years who's started a job with you at a relatively low level and eventually earns the respect of his peers with you after going through crap. If there's one things ME3 lacks in gameplay, its quotes like "SCOPED AND DROPPED!!".

I thought Garrus was at his best in ME3. The thing that always bugged me a little about ME2's Garrus is that it's not affected in the slightest by whether or not you resolved his issue with Dr. Saleon. Despite this, he was still my Shepard's #2 on the Normandy, and he and either Zaeed or Miranda were my favorite combo to take on missions.

He sorta is, but it doesnt show except during his LM since if you hardened him, he'll think its odd you wanna spare Sidonis if you bring that up.

I liked him more in ME1. I thought the good point about ME1 Garrus was that you could shape his personality a bit. Shepard who gave her opinion about Garrus's attitude, and Garrus learning from what Shepard just said. That was more special than what came afterwards, imo. I don't hate him, but I am not exactly a fan of his "bro" attitude in ME2/3.

I feel like Garrus's personality was somewhat shaped by Shepard, but then mostly shaped by his 2 years on Omega, just cause 2 years is probably more than what he spent with Shep and he went through alot. People grow the most when they take up leadership positions themselves.

His code of conduct came from Shep, but I feel like his boost in confidence and snarkiness came from his time as Archangel.

And I dig the way his personality changed hehe. Like when he shot the thug who took Dr Michel hostage, if you scold him for taking that shot he was all like, "Uhh I'm sorry I wasn't thinking!", whereas a ME2/3 Garrus would've been like, "Oh please as if you have to worry about me"

He's overrated. He's not really interesting, until ME3. Hell, he has like 2 or 3 conversations on the Normandy in ME2. like wat?

people who don't understand his popularity/likability should just romance him tbh  :D

garrus's popular appeal is split between what he offers in a 'bromance' and/or a 'romance'

if the 'bromance' part is going over your head then maybe you just need some garrus-lovin' rawrrrr  ;)

Maybe my views of Garrus are uh..hard to stomach for some but atleast I know how to take it easy and not tick people off on a daily basis.

Before this becomes another thread that veers tragically off topic because someone thought he is a genuine wise crack, I'm going to leave this here to remind everyone:

His romance actually is what turned me off to him. Just one of his romance conversations is as cheesy as the entire Citadel DLC.
