Bioware could have made ethnicity a non issue like they did with sexuality in Thedas, but they didn't.

At least I hope there will be more PoCs who have important roles this time.

Would you want them to be human or another race altogether?

LOL.

I'd like there to be a variety of races within each species-type, it's more than just weird that fantasy doesn't do that. And for the more human-featured (basically everyone except qunari), there should be NPCs that are different earth-analogue races. I mean, it's not just white people who'd like to see themselves in elves or dwarves.

These guys would fit into the setting.

Of-course there would have to be a Bioware Romance Option too  :D

I was thinking like how Elves have Welsh accents, does the OP want another race to have an Asian vibe with them.

There are different skin tones among the races, but if you mean more like culture wise then I agree.

I'd like both. Like, ideally the Welsh thing is for Ferelden/Orlesian Dalish elves, but in other countries there are other accents and cultures. All are Dalish, but each has developed according to their normal stomping grounds.

DA2 kinda did that. Merrill who was from Nevarra had a different accent than Marethari and the rest of her clan which was from Ferelden. With all the clans meeting, it'd be interesting to see how they all differ.

Yeah, but it was still just another Britsh Isles accent, which is basically everything. I'd like a touch more variety. Admittedly we see very few Welsh characters in fiction and such, but it's still the same family of accents and cultures.

Break away, Bioware. We know you can do it. Let your next DLC face-scanned character be Sendhil Ramamurthy or Rinko Kuchiki.

I cringe every time I hear people call someone "Asian". It's the largest continent on the planet with a whole lot of countries with people who can look very different based on region, yet people from the rest of the world just love to round them off as "Asian". In my country alone, people's faces change from north to south. Saying a person looks "Asian" or immediately refer to a handful of countries is ignorant and sometimes even disrespectful. Then again, this is the internet so I've long since decided to not be bothered by it. Glad that at least I don't have to deal with it thanks to where I'm from and how I look.

Honestly, I'd rather not see Bioware try so hard to cover all groups of the real world, since Dragon Age isn't. Unlike some other groups I commonly see here which I won't name, I see no need for the "equal representation" in a game that I play. I don't want Bioware to include certain groups of people for the sake of it. Especially not in the sense of "Hey! we dun got no Asians, lets get some Asians in the game!". Also, OP should try to be a bit more specific, maybe even elaborate a little.

"I've decided not to be bothered by it" preceded by a lengthy paragraph about being bothered lol.
Personally, sure sounds good, throw in some stereotypical Asian looking NPC's and characters. I assume people are leaving out Russia and India when they say Asian. But I don't want a new culture coming with them.
Like if we discover a new country in a future game that's populated by "mongorians" or "a (sh)city wall" then sure , bioware will/should give them the full codex treatment. But if we get more diverse NPC's I don't want a random off screen explanation for there being a ton of "Asians" where there were none before

I'm "Asian". I know what you mean. In my mom's country (Thailand), there's noticible variations. Laoish looking in the North, then Camodian looks, Siamese, and Chinese mix..

That said, some Asians would say they can't tell the difference with Westerners either. "You all look same!" Heh

I'm as bothered by this as I am when I see kids talk about things they have no clue of. I just wanted to make a point and possibly illuminate a few folks about the continent itself, since people here are so graciously discussing it without even realizing what they speak of or in this case, who. But from the looks of your post, I guess it's wasted.

True, "Westerner" is used to refer to Americans and Europeans alike in my country. I just find "Asian" to be ridiculously ambiguous.

What people typically refer to as "Race" is dominant phenotypes based on the evolution of isolated populations of people. It's technically more accurate to refer to human "Race" as "Breeds", similar to dogs and cats. Anyway, I digress.

Remember that Thedas is but a sliver of the world itself, I don't think the geographical region of Thedas that would produce what some would call "Asian" Characteristics has been explored, so unless you can rationalize a mass immigration there's no context for a large representative population of "Asians" within the game world.

This is because humans quickly classify based on the most obvious characteristics. With little exposure to different "Races" (I really hate that term by the way), the most immediate differentiating properties are shared, so it's hard to pick out the minutia of an individual. Anyone who has known a pair of twins in recent memory probably remembers that "Moment" you were able to tell them apart at a glance, even if they wore the same outfit. It's just a matter of acclimating, and not as insidious as most people try to make it out to be.

The idea is good. But I doubt that Asians could be added easily unless they add new continents to Thedas. Much of it is unexplored and mysterious. May be in the future, we can get Asians.

I get what you mean. I happen to mixed white/asian to be exact, so maybe I've always had an eye for different characteristics. From self-examination, from exposure to family, and exposure to different people growing up in military circles as well (military crowds tend to be all walks of life).

But anyways, I don't see it as particularly insidious either. More amusing than anything.

Lore wise, it would be interesting if there are other continents that are Asian like... we just haven't seen it yet. The Qunari came from elsewhere too, but we don't know what the hell they are. Who is to say there aren't other races?

The same could be pointed out about the Elder Scrolls. Everything takes place in Tamriel, but there's a whole other continent (Akavir) that seems to have Asian motifs.

Plot twist. Jade Empire actually takes place in a far off continent far from Thedas.

I'm all for it, but you know what it will come with terrible stereotypes. Just like Asian games comes with horrible 'westerner stereotypes' big, blonde, white, loud mouthed and arrogant..because American= westerner,

Being "Asian" myself (I used to get ticked off by this term, but I'm now used to it), I do notice the lack of Asians in fantasy games.  But of course, these fantasy games traditionally are based on medieval Europe, so yeah, Europeans.  The baddies seem to always be the ones that look different from other lands.  Unfortunately, that tends to be people who look like those peoples outside of Europe.  Being that this is a fantasy based on a certain area in the real world, I accept it, although am slightly sensitive to who they consider the enemies.  I don't really care for Asian-themed stuff in these games (and I actually hate seeing anime moves showing up in combat or Fenris-anime styles), although I don't see why there can't be some appearance differences (yes, some Europeans look Asian), while keeping in context with the world.  What I would be really concerned with is actually sticking in the token minority just for fanservice.  A character that just is there just because for sake of equality when there is really no equality.   Like the token woman.  Or a token ethnicity.  I don't know the background of Vivienne... where is she from?  Are there other African-American looking NPCs in Thedas?  I would hope so, and her not being one-off.  So yeah, I would be ok with Asian peoples in Thedas if it made sense in the context.... if say some country did have some people that looked like that and thus some NPCs and therefore a follower could also look like that.  Otherwise, then just having the option to make my character look more Asian if I had the desire to would be good enough.

Where I live, it's always used to refer to East Asians too, never South Asians.

I don't understand this "fanservice" term. Like, how can anyone actually distinguish between a character that is "fanservice" and a character that isn't? If you see an Asian character in the next game, what would make you suddenly think he/she isn't there for a different reason?

I disagree with the Medieval Europe thing, too. The game is a fantasy world based on fantasy, and that's it. There were certainly no dragons in Medieval Europe where people walked around with sh!t stained pants.

Surely if the devs can come up with a reason to include a race of grey-skinned, horned Arnold Schwarzeneggers, then they can certainly come up with a reason to include some Asian-looking people.

Well, I don't know where you live, but no one in my country uses "Asians" unless specifically speaking of the continent itself.  Foreigner is used to refer to anyone from outside the country, when their nationality is unknown.

For me, Asian-looking is the right term to use if I'm going to refer to certain facial traits of a person. The word "Asian" itself however, that can point to a whole number of groups unintentionally. So to "More Asians in Thedas, Please", I go "What?".
