Boring?! You and I must have listened to soundtracks because I have to say that the Mass Effect 2 soundtrack completely eclipses the soundtrack from Mass Effect 1.

Any musical piece that can get the hairs on my arms and neck to stand up, and cause my nostrils to flare is very good, indeed.

Mass Effect 2's soundtrack inconsists of no less than 10.

Don't get me wrong, the Mass Effect OST was excellent, but this one...it is just epic.

I admit that a number of them are a little bit anticlimatic, and/or maybe need to lengthened a bit, like The Illusive Man, but all 27 tracks are damned good.

My biggest gripe would have to be the fact that the music from Afterlife, the club on the Citadel, and the character creation/modification screen are missing. IIRC, there's a few other tracks that are missing, as well.

All in all, despite a few very minor shortcomings, this has to be my favorite soundtrack, period...and this is coming from a die-hard Hanz Zimmer fan.

P.S. sorry for the necro.

Let me begin by mentioning that I haven't actually /listened/ to the soundtrack - I've just soaked it in as part of the playing experience, which has been good, so they must have done something very right. :)

I did, however, get a bit of the feeling described and I think this can probably be explained using the old expression, that the composer team punnily enough use as a name for themselves. Almost every piece is a wall of sound - they are very tightly produced, with little in the way of "holes". Add on top of this that the pieces have been designed with a common tonality, so that they'll fit well together as a whole. Given these things; if you just play and hear them in the background, rather than concentrate on the music, the pieces soon begin to blur together and sound same-ish.

In the first game, tracks were allowed to have more space in them, without every square millimetre between their bones padded out with tissue - they also got to have a less uniform "sound of their own" - I recall jumping slightly in my chair, when stepping below on Feros and thinking "Whoa, did I get transported to DeusEx all of a sudden? :). There may have been fewer tracks as well... at least you got to hear the same ones over and over again, in certain recurring situations, hammering them firmly into your mind, where, perhaps, in ME2, you get a stream of new individual variations on the themes.

Those three things would be why the older pieces might leave a more "distinct" impression.

I loved ME:s soundtrack. However, I felt that ME2:s one was worse. They recycled the same piano part in numerous tracks and songs were for me too long (up to 9minutes!). That being said, It wasn't that bad, soe tunes were golden (tali, horizon, the end run) But the whole package was average at best.

I liked the first soundtrack a bit better but your forgetting the "Suicide Mission" score, I mean that is awesome, plus an orchestra is never generic. Let's look at all of the Star Wars Trilogy, & Lord of the Rings, they remade some scores but they were still very well performed. From being a former trumpet player I know that even this music would literally make me breathless from the way way higher notes. Of course your choice of music is also a preference, but I don't think these scores are generic at all. Plus they get stuck in your head after awhile

Is Bioware abandoning the classic ME sound to capture the Micheal Bay crowd?

I have to say that ME1 soundtrack is far far superior to ME2.

I also find ME2 OST very generic (with few exceptions) and I really think that it can be easly added to a Modern Warfare game.

ME2 ost is less athmosferic, less misterious, less sci-fi and less original.

in my opinion.
