Yes.
The dog never talks back to me, never questions what I do and enjoys shredding the enemy.

I always recruit dog and I always give him a goofy name like Alistair Jr.

The special moves are great-and your summoned wolf gets most of them as well.
I still like Dog better though.
Yeah.. Dog can put out a ton of damage compared to a wolf. He seems to work well with all STR, like 2handers. I think ranger pets are capped at 17 or something... not to mention you need to level to the 4th skill, and it turns into a Blight Wolf. Which is uglier than Dog. ![]()
Dog can definitely do a lot of damage, which is why I love having him with me on all quests (Extra Dog Slot is an awesome mod). I just wish he had more talents available. I always end up having two points at the end of the game that Dog wasn't able to use because he ran out of talents.
As for names, I usually try to name him something that is a counterpart to my character's name: HN Raven with her dog Edgar, Mage Lilith with her dog Mephisto (Mephistopheles was too long), etc.

Yeah, they don't win any beauty prizes.
Check out the damage in the Ranger thread, or watch Nathaniel summon a pet some time. The pets do a ton of DPS.
Dog gets the warrior line on console, he also gets some of the Awakening warrior talents in Witch Hunt.
EDIT-the ranger thread doesn't mention damage, just attack. The top end wolf finishes with 133 attack.A all strength dog could probably beat that-I think.
Oh, I know the pets are still pretty good.. one of my main characters is a ranger actually. But Dog is a bonafide/fully lvl'ed companion.
My main complaint about rangers isn't really damage. It's just the slow casting time. Same with shapeshifting.

You can summon a pet as soon as you enter a area. You don't have to wait until you enter combat.Unless it's a random encounter of course.
As for shapeshifter-stand in a Glyph of Repulsion and transform. It should keep the foes off you long enough, and I also think there's a instant cast mod on PC.
Yeah, I just don't like the lack of instant cast. It should be more like the Fade shapeshifting. Or Wow druid spells.
I wonder if there's a "lore" reason for it though. Maybe you can will things into being quicker in the Fade for a reason.

Try this~ Extended Dog Talents by ZeRux
I must admit to fudging the issue by using the Extra Dog Slot mod. I can then keep a maximum of character interactions going whilst having the benefit of the loyal Barkspawn always being by my side.

Always get the doggie.

I always recruit Dog, then take forever to come up with an appropriate name for him. The only problem I've found with the Extra Dog Slot mod is if you choose rescue after being taken to Fort Drakon. With the mod active, only 1 companion shows up in the party. I have to disable the mod beforehand (or exit, disable, and reload since I usually forget) in order to get both of them there.
I recruited him and named him after my real dog.
love the dog (can't have one where I live so he's my sub) have extra dog slot so he's with me all the time
The dog is just to good to pass up, he killed that one high dragon in the urn of The Urn of Sacred Ashes quest ,Flemeth and the Archdemon for me. I think missed, some high dragons but i'm sure he would have killed them with no problem either.

Socrates (Dog) & Morrigan is all I need. Beat the game on nightmare using only them.
Cauthrien and Loghain probably find Barkspawn a bit overwhelming...
I always name him Barkspawn too. I was thinking of naming him Templar because he is the mage killer. ^^
His immunity to overwhelm is great. Him and Shale are lifesavers in the Brecilian ruins.

I nominate the dog to be king of Ferelden.
I'm a dog person, so obviously I get him every playthrough. ![]()
I give him a different name every playthrough (his name is Banana atm
).

I will take him and Shale with the party next time I play through nature of the beast. ![]()
I haven't played a game without him. Him and Shale really come in handy against high dragons.
