FF isn't on a downhill path, I don't think. I wasn't a big fan of X, but I loved XII. XIII isn't so great, but who knows about XV. I loved all of VI-IX. I guess what you could say is that they're not perfectly consistent...

Mass Effect 2 will be better. But FFXIII will win because it's called FINAL FANTASY.

I used to love FF, played 7,8,10,11,12 and quite honestly i am sick of the feminine guys in the story so ME2 for me.

They listened the fans on the feminine guys and thus, they got you a sarcastic, comrade-slapping Cloud Strife clone masculine girl main character, woot.

Gender bender is like all the rage here.

the franchise is going downhill since some time ago. Since X. and X was far inferior to 7 and 8.

Wow...talk about different tastes.

I thought Final Fantasy VIII was the weakest in the series, and that VII is vastly overrated.

VI is the best, then X, then IV.  At least to me.

You even have to ask?

What does FFXIII offer that hasn't been done a hardware generation ago? Or two, for that matter. Let's face it: JRPGs have been in an evolutionary cul-de-sac since the mid-PS1 era.

As a matter of fact, FFXIII takes many of the outdated JRPG systems and completely takes them away, but instead of innovating them, they simply take them out. No towns, no shops (online shopping, lol), the game feels empty in several aspects.

as long as ME3 doesn't have RAAANNNDOOM ENNNCOUUUUNTER while flying around in the star map. These games never need be compared. In terms of "2010 game/rpg of the year"... it really might be a close call.

Ever since I played halfway through FFXII, I've been scared to buy another asian rpg. I would really like it if they made fun rpgs again, Golden Sun was fun, and I would really enjoy a traditional rpg similar to that again.

On topic: I wouldn't consider ME rpg... more action/adventure, but if it is considered rpg in for awards, then probably it'll beat XIII, western world anyway, not sure how big a hit ME is in Asia.

Yeah well not to sure if i would be getting XIII anyway. FFX is the only one that truly captivated me unlike the unbelivably overrated VII which was good but far from the "best game ever made" ff7 fanboys keep spouting.

I swear they get a hard on for sephiroth.

I fell out of 'love' with the FF series when they went online with FFXI and went to hell with FFXII.

Aside from that, I'll be too busy with ME2 to give any consideration to FFXIII when it's released - even though the visuals look amazing.

I'm looking forward to both games. I preordered ME2 from Amazon and got $10 credit for FFXIII

Final Fantasy is going downhill because Square-Enix hasn't been able  to properly recruit new talent.

It's not just FF that is decreasing in quality,it's every game released by SE in the last 5-6 years. They are now releasing surprisingly mediocre and uninspired game all over the place and even the fanboys are losing the hype(didn't even knew they had released that crystal bearer or something on the wii).I didn't know Nir existed even like 2 days ago.

It's not surprising to hear rumors of SE outsourcing Final fantasy to someone else in the future, perhaps even to a western developer(Bioware could be considered). It seems the people working for SE are either getting sick of the franchise or are completely out of ideas as to how re-invent it.

I'll need to play both before I can make a fair judgement. The combat in the FF series blows though. In every FF I play I just want to bypass all the combat and go to the story, although the stories are good if you don't mind the linearity. ME wins on story and combat though, so I'm assuming this one to do better.

Maybe I was a bit blunt in my last post, but I honestly haven't seen a JRPG that's managed to raise my interest in a long, long time. Back in the SNES days, we had classics like FFVI and Chrono Trigger, and the PS1 had Chrono Cross, Xenogears, FFVII (Square's finest work to date), some interesting genre hybrids like the Parasite Eve series..

Just seems like these games are getting less and less interesting, less innovative, and the writers seem less inclined to take the hard road these days. They always seem to soften the blows, so to speak, so that no proper conflict can ever arise in these stories.

Can't compare them and i think it's idiodic to try, western RPG's and JRPG's are different genres.

I agree. Lost Odyssey was such crap.

QFT

COmpletely different tastes. I occassionaly like to play JRPG because how the combat is, is more complex then who can press a button fast enough. It can be like playing Chessonly with a story. music and great eye candy.
