The entire FF series has sucked. FFIX was the only one I kinda liked. VII? B*tch dies. Wah. VIII? Who cares about VIII. You know what, I could go on, but the fail of the FF series isn't something I want to go in depth about.

Comparing Bioware (or Western RPG's for that matter) to JRPG's is like comparing a mature, thought out novel to a coloring book. No story, characters are two dimensional (Yes, your a duck with a helmet. Go die.). But at least there are pretty pictures.

The final fantasy series ceased being Role Playing games a very long time ago. There is no role for you to play. Even if you go all the way back to IV; what ROLE do we, the player, have besides active observation? We have no input on Cecil, or Kain, or Terra, or Gogo's personality (however much of a personality Gogo had, at any rate :P). There is no real effect we can have on the events of the game. The same can be said for 7-12.

Well. I suppose the MMO game allows you to affect the world. But I assume it's status as an MMO precludes it from the traditional RPG category.

Just for the record, this is a rant about how the system works, not a criticism of the FF series. I've enjoyed them all, so far, but they're really turn-based action epics. Not role-playing games. Some of that might have to do with the previous limitations of the media.

Anyway. I'm rambling on here. As things stand right now, I'd vote for Mass Effect 2. I'm not sure I'm even going to buy FFXIII when it hits. Later, perhaps. There was never any question about purchasing ME2. :)

____
Edit: Had the numerals wrong for the FF games.

Have you really played the entire FF series? I doubt it because if you had you would'nt of only mentioned IX, VII and VIII hell you may not even of mentioned them. You sound like nothing more than a JRPG hater or rabid fanboy, take you pick.

Yeah, I've played...not I or II (I don't think. Is IV really II? F*cking numbering). You can sit there and say it was great back in the day, but truth is nowadays they aren't worth sh*t. 'Oh look, another androgenous whiny amnesiac is going to save the world! Yay...and what the hell's the point of them anyways? Let's take the moral of FFX: If you try and follow the path of your gone, dead beat dad, he'll come back from the future as a monster that'll destroy everything, until you destroy him and cease to exist cause your a dream in some frozen dudes in a wall. ...Well, I will definately not try and emulate MY parents now. Ugh.

And for those who say they created the Role play genre, that actually is referring to Might & Magic, a game that japanese LOVE over there (they still make games following that same premises). That's why you see a lot of D&D elements in JRPG's.

On the fence here. From what I have heard FF13 is a let down, but having not played it myself, I can't really comment. I liked FF12 and the majority of the internet seems to hate it, so who knows.

i used to be into FF. but around after FF9 it started going down (gradually). i can see its(FF) appeal (its in depth combat and beautiful graphics) but its just. boring. I played FF12 for the different combat but damn. Story, towns, characters boring (not that many cinematics either, suprisingly.)

so im not excited or interested in what i've seen of FF13.(plus i feel no connection to Squareenix.) Mass Effect 2 all the way. (but i think FF13 will have more sales. sadly)

edit: knowing how much square enix makes and the amount of people they employ, makes me even more loyal to my Bioware! (sort of like the underdog. plus. i've grown up with bioware games without even knowing) hahahaha<3

Street Fighter 2.... Come on, what were you expecting to be the answer in this forum?! I will love them both. I like trying out all kinds of RPGs and their different battle systems so I dont care either way I suppose. Though how can anyone top the level of sheer content of a Bioware game?! 6 classes, multiple endings, Light/ Dark sides, etc?! I play everything, but the only thing that beats Bioware's amount of sheer content would be a Nippon Ichi game. Disgaea, Makai Kindom etc. Had a level 750+ main character, multiple endings, tons of secret bosses, tons of story, etc. Those games you could play for 4 years and maybe do most the content! Big on Persona series and there level of content as well. Well over 200+ hrs in Persona 4 alone... I guess I have high hopes about FF13 though. I hadnt really been into that series since 7. Too many under the radar games that weren't main stream I went after.

LOL I think everyone is sadly mistaken that ME2 or FFXIII will win RPG of the year, I think it will be a toss up between Dragon Age Awakening or SWTOR or maybe even Star Trek Online.

I enjoyed FF on the nes.2 and 3 on the Snes.7 utterly killed the series for me.Soon as the guns came out I was done.Haven't regretted it.FF Tactics on GBA was good.Oh...Played XI for a few months.

Honestly I wont even bat an eye at FFxIII. Final Fantasy on the NES was IMHO the best of the bunch. But then again I like being able to make characters

I misguged you, you have my apologies. However i still don't see why people insisit on comparing the two, they're differnt genere. I'll be the first to admit that JRPG's havent had anything major in decade's, where as western RPG's namely ME have been revolotionary.

FFXIII will win easily. Any jrpg is filled with tonnes of same sex relationships.

At least I think they are? Genders are kind of hard to get a lock on in those games.

I think FF is such a popular game that i can see it winning over ME 2 on some places just because its so popular...

by "some places" you mean Japan right?

Because that's about the only place I can picture Final Fantasy 42 beating Mass Effect 2 in any kind of competition (unless it was a "prettiest male character" competition).

Since when has any jrpg for that matter have tons of same-sex relationships?

you are misguided, my friend :P  it is rare, or possibly non-existant, to find that in a jrpg

Don't worry about it, I tend to not explain myself well and come off as an ass. It's kinda cool.

Weird thing about the whole 'genre' thing though is that back in the day they were just called RPG's. But then Bethesda and Bioware start pumping out big hits suddenly there's 'JRPG' and 'Western RPG'. Weird.

The whole "jrpg" and "wrpg" sectionalism thing kind of gets on my nerves...  yes it is weird, infact, it's kind of offensive alot of the times.

I don't mind JRPGs, but Mass Effect 2 is shaping up to potentially replace BG2 as my favorite RPG and game of all time. Game of the Year, if not game of the century.

Maybe I was a bit blunt in my last post, but I honestly haven't seen a JRPG that's managed to raise my interest in a long, long time. Back in the SNES days, we had classics like FFVI and Chrono Trigger, and the PS1 had Chrono Cross, Xenogears, FFVII (Square's finest work to date), some interesting genre hybrids like the Parasite Eve series..

Just seems like these games are getting less and less interesting, less innovative, and the writers seem less inclined to take the hard road these days. They always seem to soften the blows, so to speak, so that no proper conflict can ever arise in these stories.

That's why I love this 'suicide mission'. I've had a loser ending leaked to me, and its like a kick in the gut. GO BIOWARE.

I'll likely get FFXIII, but instead of treating it like its some awesome piece of work, I'll appreciate the atmosphere and story, and play through the main game never to touch it again. Replay is where its at, and BW certainly has this with this title.

I'll probably play FFXIII too...but just as a way to kill time...usually FF games are good for that. They take a long, long, long time to complete. But man, nothing to look forward to this year for JRPG's. I miss Persona's or Shadow Hearts...

final fantasy ofcourse, they have the best story in their games and the best in-game movies plus the females characters always look so cute or sexy gotta love it, so it will definetly be better than mass effect 2...(I am jk ofcourse, Mass effect 2 all the way, though final fantasy is also good enough)

I'm glad you were joking. At first I was thinking of very imaginative ways to kill you.
