I imagine the griffons could have survived in small numbers in remote places of Thedas. I believe the dragons were thought to be long extinct until the Dragon Age, I could possibly see there being a similar introduction for griffons. One can hope ![]()

^^^ This. In DA2..you get several mentions of dragons supposedly being exinct. The first one is when you do the bone bit quest and go back to Hubert. He mentions that Dragons were supposed to be extinct.

I expect Griffons to return at some point, perhaps even in Inquisition, just not for the Inquisitor to ride.
Maybe in a future game we play as a Grey Warden again, and then we can ride Griffons.
Actually How awesome would it be if when they finally bring our Warden back they introduce him riding in on a Griffin. I know that not everyone's Warden is alive so maybe just have a default Warden Commander from Awakening, I just think it would be awesome to have the Inquisitor (Or a future hero but I feel it would work better in this one due to the tear of the veil) look death in the face all is lost them there's a huge shadow and a griffin lands on the ground killing whatever is attacking you and your party, then as your guy/girl get's up a figure dismounts from the Griffin and walks over to you. They are in full armor and then take off the hekmet to show that it is your warden.

The griffons were native to the Wandering Hills and the northern reaches of the Hunterhorn Mountains. They were fierce predators, but certain groups among the Orth managed to forge alliances with the creatures. Some of these folk later joined the Grey Wardens and taught their new brothers how to ride griffons in battle. The griffon trainers had a bond with their griffons and both knew what they wanted from their relationship. For the griffon that meant grooming.[2]
The Wardens experimented with relocating griffons' eyries, but no chicks ever survived.[3] The Blights devastated the eyries and the griffons slowly died off, finally becoming extinct during the Storm Age. Rumors occasionally surface of them surviving in some remote area, but have always come to naught.
The griffons' fur and plumage varied from charcoal black to brilliant white, with most bearing grey hues. Many Grey Wardens believe that it was this coloration that inspired their order's name. The Griffon Rampant remains the symbol of the Grey Wardens to this day, and griffon iconography appears on many Grey Warden artifacts.[3] The High Constable, the second-in-command to the First Warden, was the aerial commander during the time of the griffons.

They'd better not resurrect them without a compelling reason for why they've been gone all this time
Necromancy!
Oooh who's a cute little griffon skeleton? Who's a soulless automaton of bones and dark magic? You are! Yes, you are! ![]()

Maybe Griffons are what the Grey Wardens are hiding up in the mountains that the Bioware team likes to prattle on about so?
Or not. Either way, I too would love to see Griffons as a mount for the Grey Wardens.

Necromancer is a sub-class of the mage in DAI.

There could also be hybernating eggs or something. It's fantasy, they can make up a number of reasons.
If my Inquisitor will find an hibernating egg, she would make it hatch and baptize the little chicken 'Javik'.

Wait until the next Blight. I don't think they will be back in Inquisition.

What? They haven't removed it. They're just extinct. They still existed in the universe once.
They removed them from the game. It's like saying "Hey look at this really cool thing... sorry but you can't have it."
There's no reason to have interesting things in the universe but never have the chance to see it or experience it in the game.

If interesting things were only in the games, then the only interesting parts of the universe would be in the games. At which point, why have an expanded universe in the first place?

Player character: Wait, I thought Griffons were dead!
Griffon: I got better.

In a world of Dragons, Ogres, Trolls and magic, one does not simply leave out the Griffon.

There's nothing that the expanded universe could do in the first place because they're all dead (If that is the case) if a specie is extinct that kind of puts an end to them contributing anything to any story ever outside of stories that happened before that but that's incredibly limiting.

I'd name mine feathers.
And while the griffis native he thedas might be all gone, whose to say they won't pull a last airbender hand have a seperate population elsewhere?

Chronology is limiting?

I've been thinking about it and couldn't they bring back Griffins because of the Tear in the Veil. It's unlikely but I think it would be pretty awesome. However I feel it would definitely be towards the end of the game, maybe in the last act there's reports of one then during the final mission you have to fly one to get to the final boss. I know it probably won't happen but I was wondering what other people where thinking.
"Maker's Breath! Griffons!! It is like talking to a child."
Would Griffons be nice to make a comeback, yes. But with that said I highly doubt that species will every make a comeback. The only way I could see the Griffon making an appearance is the by a cameo appearance of the Hero of Ferelden swooping in to show the PC of DI how it is done.
