So, I'm really creating this one to give myself a chance to gush on about how awesome Animazement was, but with all the recent big news drops in Anime recently, I don't think I could have made this at a better time. Chat all you want about anime but please do give spoiler warnings if discussing plot lines.

So, Animazement was AWESOME! It was like a minicomic-con. I used to live in Raleigh, but never went to Animazement because honestly, I didn't want to go alone. How foolish I was... This year I told my husband that those were my plans and asked him to go with me for more autographs...he actually said yes. He really wasn't sure what he was getting into but the second I got there and he saw all the costumes and cosplay, he fell in love with it. We went to Gundam panels, the dealers and Artists rooms, actress panels, but my favorite memory is the Christine Cabanos Q&A where she did Squidgirl and Madoka quotes, talked about her career, let us listen to a video on her phone she made of her and another voice actress singing the Teen Titan themesong as Starfire and Raven, and even let us hit her up afterwards for photos and autographs! She signed my Neptunia M2K and my Atelier Meruru disks and even took photos with me and Lee. The only downers were really my neck pain(pretty much incapacitated me after that, we had to return to the hotel so I could icebag it. I wanted to enjoy Lauren Landa's Titan talk but I was hurting too much) and having missed Friday (my promised day off got forgotten in the scheduling -_-) and Lee is ready for next year's Animazement....and this time we plan to dress up!

So, onto all the recent big headlines in Anime.

For the past 2ish years, there has been a buzz about a new Sailor Moon season, one that would follow more true to the manga. After many delays, it will be broadcast online simultaneously across the world on July 5th, at 1700 hours....I think Tokyo time. Also, they are rereleasing the original animation, maybe remastering it as well and fixing names and relationships, I think.

Also in the magical girl realm, Cardcaptor Sakura is being released as well (at a hefty price tag I might add) this August I believe. I'm looking forward to seeing that one again.

I was into mangas and animes several years ago when I was 10 or 11. I watched all those series back then and you hardly knew which was not-Japanese or Japanese and so on. Galaxy Rangers, Captain Future, He-Man, She-Ra, my one and only time with Queen Millennia, later Sailor Moon. Then, some years later, I became a serious collector and reader. I still own various artbooks and comics. And I basically watched animes all the time - not only the stuff on TV but also series on tape and later on DVD (Gunsmith Cats was my very first DVD).

Today... well, I rarely watch animes now. Mostly due to the fact that Germany treated animes like children series/films. They mainly broadcasted series very early (when normal people would work), cut/censored them a lot, awful voice over... An example: the pig in Dragonball likes female panties... he likes to wear them on his head. So the German voice over made him wear hats with two holes for the ears. It has become a running gag between me and my mom. For a while, MTV showed more serious animes like Hellsing, Golden Boy, Wolf's Rain, Samurai Champloo in the evening but you know what MTV is like nowadays. I couldn't keep up with new series and simply stopped bothering.

You still can see some of my former love of mangas and animes by having a look at all my PVC statues. I wouldn't like Kotobukiya's Bishojo line if I hadn't been that much into animes. ;) (Liara, the two female Shepard, Jaina Solo and - hopefully very soon - Mara Jade.)

Thx for the Sailor Moon info - I'm looking forward to it. :)

Sounds pretty exciting! I saw the japanese voice actress for Sayaka from Madoka at Otakon two years ago, and some of the dub cast were at AX last year, although I don't really care for most dubs. Has anyone seen the movie?

I've recently subbed to Crunchyroll in an attempt to catch up on some shows I've missed in the past few years...whatever's on Crunchy at least. I wish Funimation didn't use Hulu. Anyways, two shows I really like are Xam'd and Shin Sekai Yori. They both gave me a new hope for amazing storytelling in anime, but I would recommend not reading any information about either really, just the first four episodes to see if you enjoy it.

Also, if anyone is familiar with Kickheart, the same director has a new show that Funimation is simulcasting called Ping Pong. Even if you don't care whatsoever about ping pong or sports dramas, it's very entertaining in its art style and dialogue.

Star, if you're looking at getting back into anime, I've got a few recommendations. If you're into Walking Dead/Game of Thrones type of shows, supposedly Attack on Titan is just that. I'm planning on buying it soon after all the good things I heard about it at Animazement. It is an Action/Horror/Drama type though. Then if you liked Sailor Moon, give Cardcaptor Sakura a try. And with the rereleasing of the Sailor Moon 90s anime, they're going to be re voicing and remastering them, so it might be a brand new experience if you try that. Last Exile is relatively deep...though I recommend skipping the first episode or two and did you ever see Fullmetal Alchemist? It goes hand in hand with some of the anime you mentioned.

Erik, I have not seen the movies. Truthfully, I'm hoping this summer will be devoid of game releases so I can focus on my anime collecting for a change. I've got a ton of partial series and other series I just want to start collecting.

I just finished the last episode of Tenchi War on Geminar today and really enjoyed it (the last few series they made sucked and made little sense so it was so refreshing to see Funimation get it right again!). For any former Tenchi lovers out there, this series has all sorts of hijinks, but retains depth in the characters, and thankfully, not all the girls are chasing after Kenshi. It kind of reminded me of the OVA and the story was very well written. I'm hoping that they continue on this one ^_^

I own all Card Captor Sakura manga volumes and like everything CLAMP(y) I loved it. :D (I stopped with Clover - have everything by Clamp up to this point - mangas mainly of course.)

A German boulevard internet magazine already complains about the slim figures and the long legs of the new Sailor Moon characters. Ha, they should have a look at Takeuchi's manga. Bishoujo mangas were (are?) well known for their super slim heroines with ridiculously long legs. I even found the original anime characters a bit chubby. But it fit well because all are students etc.

Attack on Titan had me interested when I browsed through the Kotobukiya line-up. But now that you've told me it's like WD or GoT I will skip it. (GoT is remarkably well equipped but too brutal...)

After having watched the first two episodes of the new Sailor Moon Crystal I have to say that I like it as much as I did before. It's even more compelling when I watch the original series at the same time. - The original series is broadcastes in Germany at the moment. - Perhaps because the original is dubbed in German, while Crystal is available with fan subs. (I've always prefered the original Japanese voices.) I also prefer the manga because in the anime it's always the same structure. Demon tries to steal souls/brainwash souls/whatever, SM challenges the demon, SM gets in danger, SM cries, Tuxedo Kamen/another Guardian interrupts the demon, SM defeats it. The manga is firmer and I had hoped for the new anime to stay more true (truer?) to the manga than the original series did. But after two episodes, anything still is possible.

Have you watched it yet? How do you like it?

I do like it quite a bit as well.  I've been watching it with a friend and we've discussed how Tuxedo Mask is a far more agreeable character than he was in the original anime.  According to the VIZ Media announcement trailer for Crystal, it is supposed to redo things, be more true to the manga, and get things right but honestly, you're right.  Anything is possible with only two episodes under our belts.  Still we're thinking Mars is next in line in the next episode.  We'll have to wait another two weeks to find out.

Also been watching The Legend of Korra.  Not sure if you watched the Avatar, but Korra is hilarious!  Bolin is like Saka, but so much funnier!  Anyways, I've got the week off so I've been playing video games and watching Anime.  Already watched Puella Magi Madoka (very very good anime.  A darker, sadder, magical girl story but extremely well written storyline), and so after Korra I might take a break and work on the Assassin's Creed series again.  I had a goal to finish off 5 video games by the end of August so I need to get my butt in gear!  I still have four games to go!  I figure, I never even played over half the games I own (darn this collector's bone in me!), so if I can just pick a number and finish them by the end of the year, that's better than how I usually do it (play a game for two months at a time then quit five minutes before the final boss battle because I don't want the game to end >_>  Yeah, kind of ironic, I know.).

Korra is great, season 2 just landed on Bluray over here. My sister bought it, will be stealing it from here once shes done.

Crunchyroll is an amazing service for anime, though yes alot of the Funimation titles are not there. They offer me a free month promo every couple months so I just do the trial then cancel. Been watching lots lately, alot of the new animes follow the same tropes and structure though. A most recent one is Rail Wars, its pretty good and it revolves around trains. Its funny how they can make being a security officer for Japan rail way so cool and badass lol. Kill La Kill is insanely awesome, made by the Gurren Lagann people like a spiritual successor to GL.

Still buying anime/manga figures but alot less then in the past.

Dan, tell me more about Kill la Kill.  I've had my eye on it but a friend of mine who checked it out called it boring...  I'm trying to hold off on watching it on Hulu until the boxset for the whole series comes out (if I see an episode and like it I might end up buying it volume by volume).  Funimation has their own channel on youtube, if you're ever looking for the episodes, and hulu has tons of Funimation shows as well.

The last anime I watched (after Korra) was Baccano!  Oh my gosh...I have never laughed so hard in my life before.  It was dark and funny and had a good story with memorable characters.  I think I might've seen it once a long time ago.  I'm finding this to be a recurring theme in my life.  I see an image of an anime or character and go "oooh....that looks interesting!"  Then I get halfway through or near the end of watching the anime after buying it on a whim only to realize that the recurring feeling of deja vu is because I actually did see it once at some point in my life.  Still, the rediscovery of my old classics are still just as great as the newer future classics of this anime generation!

Have you watched Kill la Kill yet Beo?

Ive been enjoying the Fate Stay Night unlimited blade works, never watched the original but this remake is insane. Everything that made Zero so awesome. Aside from that Ive got into RWBY big time, it just finished season 2. I deifnitely recommend it, the fighting is insane, funny, cute, very unique. The only poor thing is the writing its pretty weak but for such a small show its pretty good. You can watch it on Roosterteeth for free. Been watching a ton of One Piece as of late, Funi finally put up all episodes to date. Watched the Thriller Bark season for the first time. Love One Piece.

I have not watched Kill la Kill yet, but it is on my "going to" list.  I haven't bought it yet, but I know it's on Hulu, which I'm paying for anyways so it's really a matter of finding the time now.  What brought it to my attention first was that it was featured on my Animazement ID (they had a few different ones depending on where you picked up your IDs), but I'm really hoping that it will come out with a boxset so I won't have to purchase it volume by volume.

I've actually watched Part 2 of Attack on Titan (whoa!  I spent probably an hour this past weekend convincing my best friend that the second part is worth suffering through Errin Yager for, it was that good!), The Girl Who Leapt Through Space (okay.  Usually I get annoyed with the ones that have constant sexual references but this one was so funny I couldn't fault it for it) and then a bit of a few others.  I stumbled across the boxset of Pretear at Edward McKay's (a trade-in store I used to frequent back in my college days - now I visit every time I'm up there) for about 7 dollars for the whole thing.  I couldn't pass that deal up, especially with it being out of print.  I watched the first DVD of that but haven't had time to go any further than that.  I'd lump it definitely into the "girly" category lol.  Then I tracked down and watched part one of Squid Girl (saw Christine Cabanos at Animazement...she was amazing reperforming Squid Girl's lines in person), and I've started on Ah! My Goddess.  Yeah....I bought Ah! My Goddess a really long time ago, and I have just now taken it out of the shrinkwrap the other day.  >_>  To say that I have a backlog of great anime to watch would be an understatement.  Well two volumes of Ah! My Goddess down, an unknown number more to go...  I am actually wishing now that I'm watching Ah! My Goddess that I had watched it years earlier.  It really is a good anime.

All of the Fate/Stay Night series is actually on my list to eventually collect too.  Each one can actually be held separately as its own universe or its own story.  They have similarities, but they are not the same.  Battles turn out differently, people react and are different from one story to another.  I have the original series, and I remember having the epiphany about Enema (I KNOW I just spelled his name wrong.  It's awful but everytime my friend and I refer to him I call him "enema" lol...  I wanted to give him one after having to deal with his attitude at the beginning of the original series lol) right at the end.  There are so many good clues leading up to it that you really can't connect until that final moment in the end.  If you have the time to look up the original series, I do recommend it, even with Enema's initial reaction to Saber.

You know, I never got into One Piece, and I'm kind of glad that I didn't now.  It's like Naruto in the episode department (and this is part of what makes me balk when thinking of Fairy Tales as I know it'll be a money sink once I'm hooked).  Are they still making episodes for One Piece?

The anime that I'm hoping to get in the next 6 months (and maybe even open the shrinkwrap of!) would be Log Horizon, Dusk Maiden, and Puella Magi Madoka.  We'll see which ones I actually get.  Then the ones in my collection I'm hoping to open for the first time or finish off....  Last Exile (I stopped at the last disk), and Fam the Silver Wing and Outlaw Star.  Still Reboot is drawing me back again too.  Too many choices >_>

Oh, by the way, watching any of the rereleased classics?  Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, Cat's Eye, Cybersix? Now that they've finally rereleased Cybersix (I didn't think they would) maybe I'll get lucky and the guys who bought the rights to and rereleased Reboot will do the same with it's sister series, Shadow Raiders (War Planets).  I'm not sure if you ever saw it, but I loved that series.  I've been trying my hardest to collect them DVD by DVD but it is so hard with them being so old and not many people having really watched the series and collected them.  What really stopped me from collecting them years ago was the name issue.  Released on cable as War Planets....sold on DVD as Shadow Raiders O_O  What the hell were they thinking!?!?  No wonder I never found a DVD of War Planets!  lol....

The new Fate Night is only 5 episodes in I think so no Enema yet but I'm really enjoying it. I couldn't stop watching Titan when I found it awhile back, just awesome. Magi Madoka is a must see, its only 12 episodes but very good.

As for classics, not really no. Ive been thinking of watching some Dragon Ball Z but thats a 9 season hole. I bought the entire 9 seasons awhile back since they were like 10 or $15 a season but they are still shrink wrapped and this was years ago. I believe I only opened season 5 since I loved Trunks and the androids back when I was watching it in grade school. Same deal with Inuyasha now that I think about it, I have like 6 seasons still shrink wrapped, bought em during one of Funi's sales.

My sister has been watching the new Sailor Moon, I didn't know there was new Card Capturer though, thats another favourite of hers. I did go see the new DBZ movie in theatre actually, which was awesome. It was all comedy which was surprising.

One Piece has become an obession, I have no clue why but I love the crap out it. Still buying figures from the show and yes its still going with new manga and anime epsiodes. Its past like 600 episodes I think.

I even made 2 games using One Piece art heh. Someone ripped all the sprite art and music from a DS game and I used that to make an infinite runner and a platformer for school projects. I'll link my portfolio, not much on there yet but you can play the 2 games. May have to download the Unity web player first.

Unity web player if needed

Be interested in what you or anyone else in the group thinks of them. I'm still working on both but just fixing bugs at this point. Spent 2 weeks on each. Handed in the platformer on Friday and my instructor seemed to be pretty happy with it.

You are in luck Dan! I have a whole week off next week so I think I might actually be able to try out those games. I can't promise though that they will work on my laptop. I was going to gift myself an actual good computer this year for Christmas but it seems I've settled on bookcases with sliding glass doors and a new gaming couch. I just need to get my husband now to help me offload my old couch.

I'll let you know what I think. I'm hoping to clean and blog too. I think gaming sounds better than cleaning...

Cardcaptor and one of its movies have been rereleased. Very expensive though. I went ahead and grabbed the premium edition though. Been trying to get the dvds one by one so passing it up would have been ridiculous.

I attempted to not give in as well for similar reasons. Still, didn't make it. I would have given in earlier had I seen the mega deal on that Fate Kalied earlier. Now I've ended up with Dusk Maiden (waited forever for it to go on sale), Log Horizon, Another, La Storia Della Arcana Famiglia, and Psychic Detective Yakumo. A strong theme I'm seeing in this order lol... I absolutely must ignore the rest of the days lest my resistance fall short again!

So, giving an update to the Anime thread.  Most of the anime that I got in that Christmas rightstuf sale I have now watched.  Somehow, I've watched more anime than played games.  ~sighs~

First off, I watched Dusk Maiden and was duly impressed, though somewhat annoyed by the fan servicing.  I watched Log Horizon and fell in love all over again with it back in January.  I can't wait for season two to migrate over here (I'm hoping they retain the original English voice actors - I honestly am not a purist.  If the dub is good, then I'm not going to try reading subs.  If it's great, then even better!  There's really only a few anime, My-Hime and Twelve Kingdoms, where I've gone to the subs as a preference due to voice acting.).  Then I made the mistake of immediately opening my Arcana Famiglia after watching Log Horizon and spent most of the anime judging it quite harshly against the awesome perfection of Log Horizon lol.  I needed probably 3 weeks in between to critique it fairly.  As far as Reverse Harems go though, Famiglia was about average with a bigger cast than usually seen in them.  Then I put in Red Data Girl and loved the story.  I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before, though I don't remember when or where.  After that, I tried Texhnolyze and things still haven't really picked up after the second disk.  That one's going on a backburner for a while for now.

Then this weekend, I watched Another.  Now wow....  It is really hard to describe this one.  It's a horror/paranormal/mystery type.  Superb.  This one is going to the Masterpiece pile with Log Horizon.  I was on the edge of my seat, biting my fingernails and holding my breath throughout this one.  If anyone is interested in this genre, I highly recommend taking the time to track down a copy to watch.

After finishing Another, I looked through the "Other Anime by Us" section most dvds and blurays have and spotted Hiiro no Kakera - The Tomayori Princess Saga and thought "hmmm, that looks interesting".  Honestly, I spotted it as a reverse harem immediately, and there really aren't that many reverse harems out there to begin with.  So, I get on my Hulu and starting watching episodes.  Either, it's predictable with the type casting of the characters.....or I didn't wait long enough in between watching a Masterpiece like Another and watching something that might not be a Masterpiece.  Not sure, but I think I'm going to let a friend watch the rest for me and then go based off of her opinion.

That being said, I've also been watching a bit of Kill la Kill too on Toonami's Adult Swim.  Well, I was recording it until the cable box royally screwed up and deleted three episodes.  v_v  I haven't bothered trying to look it up on Hulu.  It irks me that they have such a huge anime library only for 98% of it to be subs.  Still, I have kept up with it enough to think that I know what's going on.  It's interesting, but something that I think I'd wait to go on sale.

Looking at my anime collection from the old days, and the new additions from the past year or two, I think my taste in anime is beginning to change.  I used to have a bunch of I guess you'd call them "hero based" type animes.  You know, big villian threatens world, a hero with special abilities/magic rises to defeat big villian, rinse repeat (Trigun, Sailor Moon, etc).  I used to really be into Space Operas too (I sort of still am but they are so few and far in between especially considering quality), but I haven't had a new one in years or even rewatched my old ones.  Now it seems I'm more interested in horror/paranormal and in character/relationship focused anime (Wolf Children, Another, etc).  I wonder if this is a transient preference or if it is going to be a more permanent focus of my future anime collection.

Anyways, what have you all been watching lately?

Oh, and anyone watched the new dubbed Sailor Moon?  The voices aren't bad, but it is killing me to listen to Luna!  I know if I watch long enough, my brain will stop superimposing Rita Mordio from Tales of Vesperia over Luna when she talks, but for right now it's really strong.  Doesn't help that Rita was my favorite character from that game.

I'll post more later, my sister has been watching the new Sailor Moon and is enjoying it. Season two of Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works has started, not bad thus far, 2 episodes in.

Rewatched RWBY, love it. Was very sad that the creator and lead everything on it died last month but they are continuing it. Apparently he had 11 seasons planned and had shared/ started planning the next 3 with the crew before he passed. He died from a severe allergic reaction during a routine medical procedure, was 33 I believe, quite tragic. I'm excited for it to continue.

Aside from that just trying new animes on Crunchyroll, haven't seen anything that has me excited yet, like Kill La Kill or Attack on Titan in the past. There was a period there where there was quite a few I was really excited to watch.

Hmmm...well I've now watched A Sacred Blacksmith, Ambition of Oda Nobuna, and Cross Ange. Loved Cross Ange and actually enjoyed Nobuna. I can't wait for Cross Ange to make it over here. It's a pre-order show for sure. I'm sure that I've seen Blacksmith on TV before somewhere even though I didn't recognize it at first. Maybe adult swim or something.

I did watch an episode of The Irregulars at Magic High (I think) but the unhealthy sister love for her brother really was a turn off and kind of annoying. Not for me!

Now onto my next anime conquest. My gaming urges are pretty much gone right now so I must be in full anime swing now. Ah well. Seems to come and go with me.

Let me know how Fate is by the way. I have one of the series but I'm holding off on buying another until I get good reviews.
