Are you hoping for a new trilogy, or a stand alone game?

In other words with Mass Effect 4, are you hoping it's part 1 or a brand new trilogy, or are you hoping they go the Dragon Age route and each new game from this point on aren't direct sequels to each other.

I'm personally hoping for a new trilogy, but given the backlash over how they handled the imports/choices on ME3, I get the feeling it won't be part of a new trilogy.

I wouldn't be surprised if its a standalone game with the possibility on being a trilogy depending on how well the first one sells

Standalone. More freedom for variation with decision-making, and no need to be concerned with communicating with the previous game(a). Course, none of that will matter if it ends up being a prequel.

Don't matter either way to me. So long as the games keep coming, I don't care much how connected they are to each other.

I don't think they were stupid enough to make the game a prequel. I think the fans made it very clear via the forums and twitter when the devs asked, that they do not want a prequel. I know they haven't said anything yet, but given the way Bioware has been talking about the game, the way they've been describing what a sequel/prequel means, and that the new game will have nothing to do with Shepard or the trilogy's events, it sounds like it'll be a reboot or alternate universe.

It won't be either those things, a indirect sequel set a good time after the trilogy is the best option.

Yeah but then they gotta find a way to deal with those choices. I mean I don't know how they could possibly ignore Synthesis. For Destroy just don't include the Geth, and for Control someone in the game can toss in a throwaway line about the Reapers leaving the Galaxy for whatever reason. But Synthesis? They'd have to retcon it wouldn't they?

Making destroy the canon ending is the best way to go, they've already made Udina the canon councilor in Retribution.

They're definitely not doing this though. They did mention the next game will have nothing to do with Shepard or the events of the trilogy.

Uh, no. They very well might be doing precisely that.

Only the plot won't be related,  the events of the trilogy will at least get a few mentions. i.e. the plot of DA2 has nothing to do with DAO but events of that game were mentioned in DA2.

Outside of Telltale's handling of choices in The Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us, which still amounts to about half-payoff and half-illusion (if that), nothing has sold me on imports.

So you're saying that they're gonna be doing the complete opposite of what they've gone on record and told us what they're no doing? They specifically said it will not relate to ANY of the events of the first trilogy.

I'd like to see a brand new series focusing on a new character.  I wouldn't limit it to a trilogy or any set number of games.  Let the series progress naturally and allow the fans to help influence its direction.

Yup, I am totally done with the data-import mechanic. The ME trilogy had some of the most talented devs in the world working on it for 10 years and with a budget of many millions of dollars. They still couldn't deliver on meaningful series-spanning divergence and consequences. I am done waiting for promises of consequences "in the next game."

Start and finish a great RPG in a single game. It was done by Bioware numerous times before they started all this data-import hubub, and it should be done again.

True enough.  I thought it was a fascinating experiment when I first learned of the mechanic with ME1.  But it really doesn't add to the game.  It only constrains the writers

I honestly feel that they should make a new trilogy, or just shelve the franchise and concentrate on their new IP. That's one major thing that differentiated Mass Effect from other RPGs like Dragon Age, is that it was one overarching story focusing on the same protagonist and characters. Now that the story is over, I personally feel that stand alone stories will feel a lot less epic. I'm sure they learned a lot from the first trilogy, so I don't see why they couldn't attempt a new one and execute it better this time.

Standalone.  Leave the door open for more adventures, sure, but be self-contained.

I mean, if the first one didn't do well, at least Mass Effect 1 was self-contained.

Either would be nice. Maybe a stand alone with a possibility for a sequel.

Trilogy. They were so close to perfection the first time around. I would love for them to try and give it another shot.

Was the import system in the ME trilogy a bit flawed? Yes, it was. Certain choices really didn't make as much difference as they should have. But this doesn't mean that they can't improve on the import system.

And even with the problems of the trilogy's imports, I still feel that it was a HUGE positive to be able to play as the same character through three games and get to know the characters over three games. Meeting Wrex on Tuchanka in ME2 was such a great moment for me, because one of my favourite characters greeted me like an old friend even though we hadn't met since the last game.

So I personally wouldn't mind seeing another trilogy.

A new trilogy is completely fine. I only ask that the entire plot is written out at once, so all 3 games flow together well. The original trilogy suffered from this, and at times felt choppy because the writing team changed. Do the entire story before the games, then splitthe game as the story requires. 3 acts, 3 games. It could work.
