Is the release date bad timing on EA/Bioware's part?

Which argument are you referring to? My OP or the whole 0.01% thing? If it's the OP then I could care less, because if anything I want to be proven wrong on that because I want DA:I to sell well.

On OP obviously.

I wouldn't worry too much about Dragon Age's sales... I'd worry more about EA's possible unrealistic expectations, if EA is expecting Skyrim numbers and forecasting/marketing to that point, we may have a problem.

Probabably can look it up on the net but A. can't be arsed B. might be good for a comparison for this thread just to see the 'compeitition'/ unrealistic expectations.

I actually think the current release date is perfect actually.  It's far enough from the holiday season that those who are going to buy it immediately will buy it now, and it's close enough to the holiday season that those who wait for reviews will buy it at that point in time. It will also be well established to make it a good gift as well during that the holiday season if the reviews are good.

Bungie should be more concerned that I will have apparently quit Destiny cold turkey on October 7th.

PoE is releasing late 2014, around December.

Well, I did say roughly.

I mean, October is still pretty late 2014  ;)

If this is the case, then is October 7 really the best time?

Dunno, but I don't see it as a problem. Alien: Isolation isn't that big of a hitter, though I'll admit LOTR is some fair competition. I could think of way worse. Like bob said, it'll be fine.

If EA is expecting Skyrim numbers and forecasting/marketing to that point, we may have a problem.

I'd expect higher than DA2, but skyrim is asking a lot. I can't read their minds(yet...), so I don't know what they're expecting.

EA is actually notorious when it comes to overshot sales estimates.

I vaguely remember them having too many copies of ME2 leftover due to overshooting.

If each console/PC sells 1million, then you have a hit I think.

Skyrim has sold like 20+ million copies. There is no way anyone is expecting DAI to sell that much. Probably not even half that much. 20 million is like the total number of units Bioware has sold ever, in their entire history, combined.

While it is trendy to bash EA and the executives, there is no way they are overshooting their sales projections by more than double.

I don't know what the financial situation is over at EA/Bioware, it could be good or it could be bad, but I'm guessing there's a big budget behind this game and EA will want it to be a major success. Probably needing to sell at least a few million copies. If this is the case, then is October 7 really the best time?

When Dragon Age: Inquisition is released, we got Alien: Isolation, LoTR: Shadows of Mordor, and Drive Club being released that same day. If that's not enough we have a colossal hitter coming out the very next week called Batman: Arkham Knight. The other problem to consider is that Bioware has a bit of an uphill battle to climb here. I'm sure some of you loved Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3, but let's be honest, a lot of people didn't. There's gonna be some people out there who don't have a lot of money that are gonna choose between DA:I and Batman: AK.

The way I see it, I think DA:I is at a disadvantage here to do very well commercially. If you look at the past few years, DA2 and ME3 released without any real competition. I'm making this thread cause I'm a bit concerned about the success of DA:I. If the game is good then I want it to do well so we can keep getting more games from Bioware.

1.The people who dislike Dragon Age 2 and even more so with Mass Effect 3 are in the vast minority just like the people who hate on Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed.
2. Dragon Age Inquisition appeals to the people who like RPGs and customization or just a fantasy setting in general not science fiction games or games based off of books or comics. Not everyone likes the Batman games or even the hero himself.
3. I like the fact that you brought up Alien Isolation because referring back to #1, the people who disliked the previous game set in the same universe, Colonial Marines were in the majority both with critics and consumers.
4. The game was delayed not just to improve the game but to also market it more similar to when Mass Effect 3 was delayed to March instead of Holiday 2011.

Only game that would even interest me is Batman. I know it is best to just wait until those Batman games have a GotY release before you buy them. Never cared for the Alien or LotR franchises. Drive club is an interesting looking game. I have been down on driving games for a long time now.

EA are a multi-billion dollar, multi-national enterprise.  I seriously doubt the release date is an accident.  It is the best available compromise between the Developers the Marketers, and the Retailers.  Everyone is working toward the best outcome, (for all of us!   )

No.  It's not a problem.  It only makes sense that more games would come out closer to the holiday season.

Much has been covered rather effectivly so I will just add my thoughts.

1. Alien: Isolation is a First Person Survival Horror game like Outlast. Even if it didn't have the issue of Colonial Marines disappointing release hanging around it's neck the fact that it's primarily a Horror game where you have to sneak by the monster and have little to no ability to fight back would lead me to conclude it's not a threat to sales of DA: I.

2. Drive Club...is also not a threat since it's a racing game.

3. Shadows of Mordor has a definite uphill battle ahead of it. Yes the LOTR name is well known but (in my experience) even those Tolkien fans who admit the game might be good, are not really happy with how they feel the lore is being treated. I'm expecting that game to only do well if word of mouth is positive. Worse, since the combat system has some similarities to that of the Arkham series it's very likely many people will just wait for the Arkham game instead.

4. Arkham will likely do well but since it comes out a week later and is an entirely different kind of game I imagine those fans that like both will just end up buying both.

I've only spoken to one person who was more eagerly anticipating Aragorn's Creed over DAI, and he had a rabid hatred of the Dragon Age franchise. Just mentioning the name sent him into frothing-at-the-mouth fits of rage.

Drive Club hardly seems aimed at the same market that DA:I is. I, for one, have zero interest in racing games. Some of the other games are definitely enticing, but they're not really RPGs (although I suppose you could argue that the LotR game might interest people who like LotR and/or the fantasy genre in general). I'm not that worried about the release date or those other games impacting sales.

Hardly. The real contender was delayed to next year.

This. Bioware is lucky The Witcher 3 has been delayed to early 2015.

OH GOD DAI IS UP AGAINST THREE SECOND-TIER GAMES ABANDON SHIP ROME IS BURNING

Like, seriously ? you bang on about Bioware's track record, and then mention two licenses with a consistenly abysmal track record...and Drive club ? that play4free racing game who will be steamrolled on by Project cars ?

It's almost like DAI is some obsucure license that would crumble against the new iteration of Goat simulator...

Nope, they are timing it perfectly for I am pretty sure a lot of the people that are going to be buying the other games probably don't have that much interest in Dragon Age: Inquisition to begin with.  Next thing I am going to hear is because they are releasing a "Super-Hero Movie" they shouldn't have any other movies opening that weekend for people that aren't interested in that genre.

People are going to moan and complain and use issues from the past to show "BioWare failed me" because the cool thing is to bash BioWare because they are part of EA. For if people really wanted to bash BioWare they should use Jade Empire as part of their strategy in the string of bad BioWare games.

Wait, WTF? While I agree it is trendy to hate on Bioware/EA and there are a lot of bandwagon haters, what the hell would JE have to do with that? JE is a masterpiece, it might be Bioware's best game ever. I mean, that is universally accepted as a fact, right?

Pretty much. Budgets and such are not as big a concern, because debt and Christmas go together like peas and carrots.
