Really? Noone else in this thread is looking forward to Tales of Xillia 2 that also comes out this October? I mean, Tales of Xillia was pretty great, I could even go so far as to say it's my favourite game in the Tales of-series.

Other than that, I was planning on picking up DAI and SoM in October, but finding out that Arkham Knight comes out just a week later, I think I'll have to delay on SoM... As a student, I can't justify getting that many games at release price, and Arkham Knight is way higher on my want list than SoM.

As for the competition, the games mentioned really aren't in direct contest with each other. Drive Club is PS4 exclusive, and free (at least for PS+), Aliens: Isolation is a horror game, which is even more niche than RPGs, and SoM looks.. decent, but I don't think it'll be a hit. The biggest competition is Arkham Knight, since both it and Inquisition are major profile titles, and RPG fans likely won't go for Arkham Knight.

According to my Amazon order Xillia is out in August.

What people are not getting is that while there is a core of "RPG people" it's pretty small and in order to post big numbers, you have to capture the imagination of people who play other games. I'm an RPG fan and I'm waiting for Arkham Knight.

Because I've seen both the prices of DA2 and ME3 drop to half(or less) within a month of release, that makes me far less bothered about being there on day 1.

I... have no idea how I mixed up the dates that bad. You are right, it's august for Xillia. Don't I feel like a fool now :P

really and truly i think ea was smart in releasing it in october with games like destiny coming out in september, elder scrolls online hitting xbox one december, assassin's creed unity hitting in december, a halo hitting in december...  if the only games you are competing with that month are another sub par lord of the rings game and batman arkham knight, then im pretty sure they did the right thing....  i look at it this way, if you had to buy one game in october, what would it be?  I bet close to 60% would say inquisition with 20% in batman and maybe a dark horse shadow of mordor at 20%.  Marketing standpoint, genius...  dont compete with the other big names, especially if a new call of duty hits in the same month

according to the release dates ive seen its late december, but it wont matter, because the most sales of a game are around its release date, by the time eos hits sales will have tapered off to where it's not even fair to call it competition....  the hype will have cooled down by then and the hype for eos will build, but eos has quite a few other games to compete with in december and will most likely not be able to capitalize on a wide open market like inquisition will

If it's only a month its close enough that people will wait for it. It really depends on how they can sell the message of having fixed the game from the PC release. Reborn worked very well, if ESO can prove the same, then it could easily have more impact than anything released on October.

I don't care about those other games personally, there's only one game for me in October :)

The only threat is Batman but it ps4/xone/pc only. Not a good idea to try and take on Ac and cod.

i dont know about you, but a month is quite a long time for me to wait when i have a game i really want sitting in front of me...  if they released eos in october to compete with inquisition, eos would get a lot more immediate sales then it would in december with the host of quality games that are coming.  However with eos being released on the pc last month, i think the hype might die for xboxone too....  though if bugs are fixed and they manage to keep it relatively in the back of people's minds this might not apply

cod hits early november, and if anything that will be the biggest threat with people waiting on a game.

Microsoft haven't confirmed a Halo game this year, and AC usually comes out in October.

Just out of curiosity if October is bad because of games being released on the 7th or 14th, when would it be a better time to release the game? A Fall release is when most games are being released to try and get more sales with the Christmas Season and looking at the release schedule there is something big being released every couple of weeks in the Fall release window.

Well you obviously want to avoid big hitters but there is no perfect time to release. The thing with fall 2014 is that is when you get games announced at E3 coming out.

With things like games being delayed and suprise reveals, there is a lot of luck involved.

Tomorrow? :)

To all debating DAI release date; can you acknowledge that it's possible - just possible - that EA, being a very large and experienced publisher of video games, despite anything else you might think about them, know what they're doing?

Batman?? Pff... I would be more "concerned" about NBA 2K15. Still thinking how to buy both.

Releasing a game during the busy season is not necessarily a bad idea.

This is a sign that the developer has faith in the game that was produced.

The developers and publishers believe that said game can stand tall amongst a crowd of fierce competition.

Releasing a game when there are not major titles out is like releasing a film in January.

Who watches films in January?

This is when a lot of poor quality films come out. People expect the film to be terrible.

If Dragon Age Inquisition came out during a time when no major titles were out, people would assume that EA and Bioware have little to no faith in the game. If that is the case, why should anyone bother to purchase the game?

Please note that this is not an absolute rule.

There are exceptions. Loads of exceptions.

I am merely trying to provide an explanation as to why lots of big title games are released at the same time.

I am fine with the October release and I agree they would have put much thought into a release date internally, but personally I rather not see the game tomorrow for they are planning on the extra few months to work on the game.  :)

I don't understand the consternation regarding the release date. There are a bunch of good games coming out in October. Only one sure to be awesome game...DAI!!!

The only other game I was looking forward to in 2014 outside of DAI was ESO. (For PS4) Once ESO delayed the release on PS4 by half a year, they really lost me as a customer.

Sounds like you've just deluded yourself into thinking your opinion is the final word on any matter. Also, creating sock puppet accounts that agree with one another isn't "Being Right". Perhaps this is unrelated to the discussion at hand, perhaps it isn't, I leave that judgement to the audience.

 The hypocrisy here is tangible.  Also, FYI, none of us are sock puppets...it's just that you made some ridiculous statements and got called out on it en masse.

The only bad thing about the October timeframe is that there is a veritable drought of interesting video games between now and then.  :(

I  think more people would consider Arkham Knight an awesome game than DAI. Rocksteady has a stellar trackrecord so far, with both Asylum and City being lauded to high heavens by both press and users, while Biowares rep unfortunately took a hit with DAII and ME3, even if I personally loved both those games.

I feel like all they have to do is hype it enough in between E3 and Release and they will be golden.

Yes, lots of trailers: Gameplay Trailers, Story trailer, Character Customization trailer, Character Customizaton demo(at least 10 minutes), Companion trailers. Also, posters in LA.
