Currently replaying Mass Effect for what seems to be the 100th time. However I am currently playing as an Assault Rifle Engineer (Kinda wished I picked barrier or singularity) on Hardcore. However, I having a difficult time trying to decide how to build Garrus. I typically give him 9 points in both Electronics and Decryption, but since I am playing as an Engineer, I really don't need points in those skills. In fact, I have only been pumping up his weapons skills, armor, assault training, and his passive. Is it worth it to put any points into tech for Garrus?

3 points into electronics/decypher to unlock an additional overload/sabotage can be helpfull in early game, where Sheps owns cooldowns are long. After that not so much anymore.

But if have squadmate power usage activated he still uses it at the beginning of an fight, softening targets for his AR/SR.

Also, overolad is the only power he uses in all three games, so there is a bit of continuity (esp. if you never let him use sniper rifles in ME1).

I like having as much Sabotage as possible.  You can keep large targets perpetually locked down and kill them at your leisure.

You don't necessarily need to max his Assault Rifles past 6, I think he is a little better going with more Sniper damage and running the sniper.  It has high base weapon force and decent damage once he gets better rifle accuracy.

You will want to invest in Assault Training for at least low levels of Adrenaline Burst.  I like to take it to at least Advanced though.  This is Garrus's big advantage over other tech squadmates, he gets to basically use all his powers twice in quick succession if need be.

He is slightly squishy early due to the fact that he starts in light armor, and also that Electronics requires a lot of First Aid investment to unlock.  I will tend to invest through the necessary ranks of First Aid to get into Electronics though, sometimes at the expense of Tactical Armor.  Since you are an Engineer, Electronics might be the one I would delay early and get at least basic Damping and concentrate on the above talents.  You can also get at least basic Damping for a little more organic CC.

Don't take Garrus if you're an Engineer.

Bring Wrex and Liara.
