This is a problem I have with a lot of modern horror. The old fairy tales did it right. Monsters are supposed to be cautionary tales about not inviting evil into your home, being afraid of the night, not dealing with strangers, etc. Monsters are supposed to have limits and have to hide in the dark and out of the light even though they are powerful, only the foolish fall prey. When you take away their weaknesses, give them human ambitions and fall in love with them, they kinda become pointless since they're just better humans.
This is part of the reason I am such a fan of the concept behind Changeling: the Lost. Supernatural's take on fairies was both parts refreshing and disappointing. For once, it showed that fairies can be and originally were more than little sparkly butterflies. On the other hand, it was all still very childish and played for laughs. One only has to read some original fairy tales to realize fairies can be terrifying and alien, two things Supernatural has lacked in its villains for a long time. If it weren't for the fact they kind of ruined it retroactively, I would almost wished they made fairies the main villains at some point. Say whatever you want to say about Eve and the Leviathans, but it was a welcome break from angels and demons.
