Your problem is that the TotSC install expects a saved game, and if there isn't one to upgrade it crashes. Thus you should install BG 1, make a new game (stats or whatever are irrelevant), then immediately save (in a normal save, not quick save). Now when you run the TotSC install, it sees at least one saved game to convert and won't crash. And yes, you should definitely NOT install to C:\program files (x386) - I usually use C:\games\baldurs gate 1 myself but you can do what you want.

In the original game, i.e. without mods, there is no real connection between BG1 and BG2 (though you can import a character from BG1 into BG2) and there are some differences in game play between them - including different weapon systems and character classes. It's therefore not necessary to have BG2 installed in order to play BG1. You will be able to install BG2 at a later stage and still import your character from BG1 if you want to do that.

There are modifications available to play BG1 in the same engine as BG2.
The two systems are Tutu and BGT.
They are BOTH popular.
I prefer Tutu, some prefer BGT.
However as a newby, I would recomend that you do not start with mods, but consider them when you have played a few games with different classes for your character, Cleric, mage, fighter etc.
There are loads of modifications available, some for the vanilla game, but a lot more for Tutu and BGT. These mods add a lot to the game, new areas, more interesting conversations, etc. etc.
These mods enable you to enjoy playing the game for years without getting bored as you don't know what to expect.
