We only know of Thedas but we can't rule out other continents on the planet since the humans came from some where other than Thedas. I'm guessing Orlais has a pretty diverse background unlike the other fair-skinned countries such as Ferelden, Free Marches and Nevarra.

Because she doesn't look Orlesian. Or at least she doesn't look like the Orlesians we've met so far.

People are interested in the character, and that includes her background.

I understand being interested in her background but ethnic? It just doesn't seem necessary, does her being a different color not make her Orlesian? Besides haven't we've already had a bunch of post about this very topic that have ended in lock downs?

I'm under the assumption that there are continents and countries that haven't been explored or formally introduced yet, and Vivienne just happens to be a descendant from one of those countries/continents. Her parents could have been immigrants to Orlais or its possible Orlais has a minority or significant population of people from where Vivienne's ancestry is from.

To me she's Orlesian, and its very likely she considers herself Orlesian. She's culturally Orlesian and very vested in the affairs of the Orlais. Her ancestry just happens to originate from elsewhere.

If she is Rivaini, then I'll assume Rivain is somewhat similar to the Middle East/North Africa with a diverse population. Some take on a more Arabic appearance (Isabela, likely Duncan's mother based on his looks) while others descent from a more Sub-Saharan African appearance (Vivienne).

Vivienne doesn't have an Orlesian (French) accent either. She both looks and sounds different than every other Orlesian character we've met in the series. I think it is only natural that people would wonder if she is either from some other corner of Thedas originally, or descended from people who are.

Also the only ethnic group we know of in Thedas so far with dark skin tones are the Rivaini. Characters from Rivain, also have English accents by the way, just like Vivienne.

Given all of the above I think it is only natural that people would wonder if she is Rivaini, or descended from one or more Rivaini immigrants to Orlais. Personally I'm hoping that she will be Rivaini, so that there will be some consistency with the accents. It would be a bit jarring if all the Orlesians in DA:I are speaking in British accents, or if some of them have French accents and some of them don't. *If* Vivienne is Orlesian and has no link to Rivain I would preferred them to hire a French voice actress.

Well good luck in your search for answers.  I'm not trying to start an fight, I just find it peculiar that a POC character background is called into question because she doesn't look or sound exactly like her other Orlesian counter parts and this is despite Dev's stating she's Orlesian. I haven't seen the same questioning towards other D.A:I characters but oh well like I said good luck and I hope you find what you seek

I think you're tilting at Windmills a bit.

Lets say Thedas was instead based on Iron Age Africa. All of the cultures encountered in the game are very loosely based on African civilizations like Kush, Axum, Mali, Songhai, ect, and the inhabitants in the game resemble the real world peoples who ancestors created those civilizations. The exception is Rivain, where some of the population resembles Europeans. If Vivienne were a fair-skinned blonde in that game, people would also be wondering whether she might be from Rivain or descended from Rivaini immigrants to Orlais.
