Apparently there's no crying in DA either

Not everyone cries. And by that I don't mean that not everyone gets sad at the same thing. I literally meant that one can experience a great deal of personal sadness and yet not cry. I have a very, very hard time crying. Personal tragedies to not really make me cry. I don't know why - it's kind of how I am. So I'd prefer it if the PC doesn't have to cry as well.

I'm the same way, but put an old disney movie with some sad scenes on the tv...  T-T

The only thing that's ever made me cry is the opening sequence from Up. That was the most heartbreaking thing I saw.

The episode with the dog from Futurama. Made me cry harder than Schindler's List

I'm more likely to cry when I'm stressed and overstimulated than when I'm sad; when I'm sad, I retreat.

I want hysterical laughter for my sarcastic Inquisitor when something bad happens.

I'm not an animal person, so that Futurama episode does nothing for me.

If my Qunari Necromancer mage that roasts people alive and raises the dead has crying outbursts I will be greatly amused.

We know that DAI is going to have an emotional reaction wheel. Maybe crying will be an option sometimes.

Good, if my inquisitor started crying, I wouldn't want to play him after that.

If there ends up being a an option that says [cry] on the dialogue wheel in DAI, it'll get screenshotted and end up being the one of the single most ridiculed video game moment in 2014.

As if the world needs any further proof that the gaming community is mostly comprised of juvenile sociopaths.

Well as far as I can recall the only example of a Bioware PC actually crying at any point is a FemShep with a Thane romance in Citadel.

Definitely never meant to suggest I wanted it to be something that was forced on the PC--of course I'd want crying or not to be completely optional.

The way I see it all Bioware games at their core are about beings with human emotions and human struggles. If having the option to fully reflect that in a varied number of ways is a moment worthy of ridicule, especially with a company so focused on giving the players choices, then apparently the gaming community needs to evolve to the level that game storytelling has. If a 'cry' option was given to a player why would that be a 'ridiculed video game moment' but Joel sobbing over his daughters body in The Last of Us isn't already? The only difference in those two instances is Joel's reaction was scripted while the Inquisitors' would have been chosen by the player. Regardless of the different genres of game being upset about a loss of that nature is universal. I just think if Bioware is looking to tell a truly human (/dwarf/elf/qunari) story with human emotions, the option to cry is something to at least give some thought to.

Sometimes I forget how deeply engrained the idea of "boys don't cry" is in so many cultures.

Like wow, really? You'd really lose respect for someone who cried? You'd stop playing? Yikes.

Sure I wouldn't want it to be an automatic thing because I like people being able to chose how their PC reacts to things. But the OP was never suggesting that the game would force you to experience emotion, just that it'd be nice to give the player the option to express a wider range of emotions. I agree with that!

That said, if, after Hawke's mom died, we saw him/her shed a single tear afterward, I still wouldn't have RAGEQUIT the game.

I don't cry. Much.

One movie in recent memory made me cry. Kung Fu Panda 2. Frozen came close a few times, but didn't give me enough time in the last scene to fully weep before making everything all hunky-dory-disney again.

Mass Effect 3 made me almost cry a couple of times. That game really had some serious pathos, though, and it gives me high hopes for the portrayal of emotion for our Inquisitor in DA:I.

But lets consider that phrase for a second.

Our Inquisitor.

Let's just take a moment and appreciate how amazing and how far game storytelling has come that we're considering how emotionally deep we want a protagonist to be in a video game, to the point that we have taken complete ownership of that character. Our Inquisitor.

I actually thought it was really bloody ridiculous that Hawke wasn't hysterical after watching their sibling get crushed.

All three options are far too detached. Nobody would calmly say, "[Name] died to save us," after seeing that.

In the Citadel dlc, femshep sheds a few tears while watching vids of Thane.

I am surprised that Hawke didn't shed one tear for her/his mother.

That's because Hawke is a callous sibling (and son/daughter). Never even bothered to visit their sister/brother in the Circle or to write them a letter, ugh. Funny thing Hawke can say to Varric that family is the most important thing. Yeah, right.

Hawke's reaction isn't as bad as Liara's on the Noveria mission. She potentially strikes the killing blow against her mother and has barely any emotional reaction.

Though to be fair Bioware did try to address that in later games by having characters make remarks about Liara grieving afterwards, but still...its a little weak in how it plays out in game.

Yeah, sorry, but Hawke's reaction to actually seeing his/her dying mother was definitely lacking. By a lot. You're actually holding your dying mother in your arms... and it's a rather sudden and unexpected death to boot.

I mean, I didn't even have to see or hold my dying mother to react rather hysterically when informed of her sudden and unexpected death.

Just sayin'.

Yeah, the death of a parent is heartbreaking and shocking enough when you're expecting it.  My dad passed away after his two year battle with brain cancer, so I saw it coming (despite my denial), and it really hit me.  I can only imagine what it would be like if it happened so suddenly without warning.  Even in the initial shock phase from the news before you can process it, you're crying.
