Wrong. He was searching for his brother. Who betrayed him and left him to die. He didn't get the red lyrium until much later, after he found his brother.
It would be kind of hard to the red lyrium to influence him before he even has it.
I'm talking about ACT 3 "HAUNTED" not ACT 2 "FAMILY MATTER" and Varric was losing it during the ACT 3 quest.
He's already had the shard for 3 years by the time Cassandra debriefs him and he seems like good old Varric. Perhaps some red templars will hunt him for the shard? Although that's thin. I don't think that anyone knows Varric has it and I doubt that just because you are affected by it you can magically track it. I think it will probably be a trinket. But well, it gave way too much attack speed to let him keep it. ^^

Ahh, well I don't recall him freaking out much, but its been a while since I played DA2 so I'll defer to you. But even so he didn't have the lyrium fragment until that quest is complete.
