Well you mentioned a Hawke mage specifically and I correlated that to the same effects that go on in DA:O. Warden or not, in either game, certain companions are not Wardens and can use magic on any level with impunity around the Templars. There was actually a part of DA:O where if the GW was a mage and had the BM spec, the templars and the other mages at the end of the Broken Circle quest would turn on the GW and s/he'd have to kill them all. Or if Morrigan has that spec and you rat her out,  she'll escape using her magic and you never see her again. It still is actually part of the game, but the script to trigger that was removed. There's a mod that puts that script back in the game.

i always did find that kinda goofy and literally the only problem i have with the game. hawke mage just uses blood magic all the time and templars be all like 'wut up bro, u cool'

I just recently played with a lot of choices like DA2's "Martyr" playthrough (with a couple of differences). If this is Bioware's canon, it's freaking sad. After owning the game for years, I got a little teary eyed actually. Surprised me.

There is a 'default' state in the comics and books, but it isn't the same as a hardcore "this is the way it is/was or is supposed to be".  I haven't read the books or the comics and tend to think of them as 'fanfic' anyway, even if they are written by the head writer (in the case of the books at least, unsure of who wrote the comics).  When DA2 came out, players had the option of 1) importing one of three world states Bioware programmed into it or 2) Importing your own world state, hinting that there isn't a considered 'canon' to how things played out.

It may be said the only "canon" that exists in Thedas is "The Archdemon was destroyed in Denerim, (Origins) and the mage rebellion began (DA2)".

All other choices/events are just window dressing.

I think the main thing I'd like to go along with their canon is the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Only because I get the feeling that Warden is screwed no matter what. Something will happen. I don't trust the writers to be gentle. lol. Might as well just make the Warden go out in a blaze of glory.

Besides, that was what I did in my first playthrough way back when.

The comics I bought (which was not all of them) were labeled something like Story by David Gaider and Written by Somebody Else.  I got the impression Gaider came up with the story, to some level of detail, but actually writing out the dialogue and whatnot was left to someone else (possibly someone used to working alongside narrative illustrators?).  There's got to be a lot different about writing a comic.

book and comics are products based on the setting on DA universe. and this literature shows you default development of the lore. which you may consider as canon.

which is why in my 1st playthrough of DAI i will use default pre setting of the events. for the first run at least.

and i will pick Loghain over Alistair anyday, topic starter, because Loghain is just overall better character.

You may consider it canon. If you want to. Or you may ignore it as not canon.

I bought the first few comics, wasn't impressed and I ignore them ever since. For me, it's not 'default development of the lore' but 'one of the rip offs of the lore'. xD

Loghain vs. Alistair depends on the Warden. Some love Alistair as their brother, and hate Loghain as a traitor, others are too pragmatic and see Alistair as too whiny for a Warden and choose Loghain. There's no 'canon' for it - it depends on how I roleplay the game.

The events and characters of the books or comics are canon until they conflict with your playthrough of the games. Basically in the hierarchy of canon anything that is imported and recognized in a game sequel is part of your canon. Everything in the books or comics is also canon *except* for where it conflicts with your save. So for example if your canon was a human mage Warden that did the DR, that is still canon, and any reference to a Dalish Warden or the ultimate sacfrice is not. Wynne however, still dies as she does in the books.

I like just about everything about the canon Warden except Alistair getting crowned as king. I make him a drunk. Maybe he'll start a rebellion eventually and earn it on his own. I might like him then. He'll finally be as badass as Loghain and his dad.

I'm also enjoying this particular world state for DA2. Merrill and Merethari are more interesting. I actually feel like earning Merrill friendship for a change. There's no one else left to to be a "savior" of the Dalish with Mahariel dead. They have nothing but Merrill (and Hawke). Maybe Ariane, if she's around somewhere.

And Merethari's suicidal behavior towards the end make some sense. She never felt right about letting Mahariel go with Duncan. And now the Warden is dead because of it. And she doesn't feel right at what's happened to Merrill as well. There's a lot more tragedy in her story this way.
