Short question: if I buy the game as physical deluxe edition (not as digital download) from an US store, can I play it in Europe?

Do we have to install origin and would this be a problem?

I really want a physical deluxe edition for the pc which is not available in Germany and I don't want a digital download. I have a slow internet connection and downloading 20 or more GB would take days and I prefer having a DVD. It is really sad that there is a physical deluxe edition in US but not in Europe.

Thank you.

Europe only has pal and we can only play a game that has the Pal logo on it

But PAL is only for consoles? I have no PC game with a PAL logo on it.

I can't see it being an issue, there are some Region locked games on PC but they are rare.

Origin is required but it shouldn't be a problem, it has never caused an issue for as long as I have used it, plus it has been giving away free games.

But for region locking that normally only comes into play when there is content in a game that is deemed inappropriate or illegal in certain countries for example Nazi symbolism in Germany or use of drugs/explicit sexual themes in Australia and other European areas where it vioate current standards laws.

I know Origin from when I was playing Mass Effekt 3. I don't like it because I have to log in every time just to play the game. This is normal for online games but for an offline game I find it annoying. So I hope there is really no region lock and will likely go this way to get what I want.

Thanks again for the answers.

PAL is more a reference to TV signals used in North America and Europe.  North America used NTSC while Europe used PAL making it impossible to play a console from one region in another due to compatibility issues (Games ran at different HTZ because of this so European games actually ran a little slower than NTSC but had a clearer signal I believe).

This isn't much of an issue now that HDMI has become the standard and is used in pretty much all markets so we don't have hardware compatibility issues.  However Region locking is more used these days to stop people from importing or purchasing games outside of there market that may be cheaper due to regional pricing or if the game is censored in there region of the world.

The game will most probably ship with a release day authentication, meaning you won't be able to activate your game until official release in your region, but other than that there shouldn't be any region lock for PC games.

I tried ordering the Deluxe version from Gamestop.com but they do not accept payment from non-uk accounts.

So for now, we are completely excluded from pre-ordering anything other than the standard version or the over-priced digital download version on Origin.

Really great, thanks Bioware.

Correction "non-US accounts"

That is normal for any game on the PC anymore that uses either Steam or Origin to be online at some point to authorize the service. I believe the online check when starting Mass Effect 3 is a holdover from when the game was being designed because Origin probably wasn't guaranteed to be working.

With my german amazon account I could log in to the US amazon site and they ship to europe and other countries too. Shipment time is around 8-14 days, but I don't mind.

But really it is sad that there is this disadvantage for pc and I don't understand why they can offer the physical PC digital deluxe version in US but not in europe?  I was close to not buy this game at all - this was a massive let down and instead of joyfully preordering this game I was just angry and sad and really disappointed the last days.

I've never heard of a region-locked game on PC.

The new Wolfenstein game is region locked to make sure German laws aren't violated with Nazi symbolism.

Make sure the coding says PAL, otherwise you're good to go, I think.

I personally think that the deluxe edition is not worth it THAT much, especially since you'll probably get the game late due to shipping from the US. I really wanted to get the deluxe edition for PC as well, but now that it's apparently impossible, I just might get the standart edition on launch so I at least get to play as soon as possible.

You can also check to see if you can get parts of the deluxe edition from europe stores as pre-order bonuses. For example, shopto.net gives the flames of the inquisition armor (that's in the deluxe edition) as a pre-order bonus.

Xbox One is region free.  PS4, too, I think.

Origins are region-free. The only thing they did right. And now with On The House. The only wrong thing is Shutting down servers.

Having region lock on PC is just plain stupid. Honestly and period. That is a big down to Steam. I can't buy Castlevania LoS2 because of that. So screw it.

The only recent server shutdowns I know of are because of Gamespy shutting down, not because EA just pulled the plug.

If you want a good laugh try telling that to the people on the Gamespot forums.

Yes the ps4 is too, so is the PS3 but you would need a psn account for whatever region the game is from if you want to play the dlc.

If you have infinite ressources to keep any and all servers for every online game ever made available for eternity (and no. that doesn't just mean money, but processing and networking capacity as well as simple space to put those server clusters), give EA a call and tell them their mistake.

Until then:

Deal with it.

Since PS3. I live in Brazil, my PS3 was bought on Japan, but it's from US. Got half of my games from UK, a quarter from US, everything works fine. But it's not about the blu-ray itself, because there is some movies with the region lock...

What? How? I can't log in with my german account D:
I feel the same way. I was soo looking forward for this game and to pre-order, but those last few weeks were just frustrating...
